starting and fueling issues

i need your help boys,a few months ago my r5 stopped running so i had found a break in the wiring for the fuel pump,so for a quick fix i ran a live wire to the fuel pump and it worked fine but the fuel gauge started to have a mind of its own.what does the fuel relay do exactly?because when i sorted the wiring out the fuel gauge worked properly and the car felt so much more quicker and more responsive

The fuel pump relay only really turns on the fuel pump, nothing more

The fuel sender has the gauge terminal there which is prone to having bad connections, that the one under the rear bench seat.
