engine noise

alright guys, just a wee question ... my engine is noisey as hell, like an old tractor or diesel transit! - well almost....................... like - tap tap tap  tap tap tap  tap tap tap tap tap tap, i reckon it was like this when i bought it so i think im just becoming more aware of them as im more used to the car and can hear avery squeak/tap that comes from the wee thing, and its fair to say im a little paranoid . im hoping this is just the tappets and nothing major, so was wondering if having the tappets reset would make much of a difference?...or any other suggestions...........

Sounds like your tappets need setting.

Does it go quiet when warm , or stay "tappy" ?

i stays tappy even warmed up...

Also blowing manifold gaskets could also be mistaken for a mechanical 'tapping' noise.

cheers guys, im just hoping its something simple like resetting tappets and its not gonna rip my wallet apart!!

Find the source, it's either the tappets or the manifold gasket as Ash says by the sounds of it, mani gasket is a PITA but tappets are a POP to set.

Yeah bud, the noise gets faster as It revs and doesnt go away either, even when warmed up. Thanks for the input guys, i'll hopefully get it looked at proper next wk once I get some coin together, will let you know how I get on

if the noise is getting  more important when the engine is running faster , regardless of engine temperature , the problem could be linked with bearings/con rod . Is the oil pressure good ? how much do you have ?
