This is something I wanna do as well after I've got through the mountains of welding and engine rebuilding I'm doing. I think the 1st person to do it was Jamie Shaw with his blue carisma 5, it involved a bit of cable lengthening and other messing about iirc.
Ring carisma on 01206 865200 and ask him. I sure he'd tell he how he did it

I'm surprised it made a national newspaper? The website's still going anyway you just can't do anything on it.

well      At some of the comments lol

Erm right well IIRC , when I did it ..... I cut the cables that run from the matrix to the control facia. (x2 of them) Just basicly to shorten them in (hien) sight! *spelling*

then I also cut the power supplys and earth and any other protruding wires then Extended them , with some good quality Electrical wire and then used some low thickness solder to rejoin the wires back onto the plug.

I then threaded the cables / plug through the exsisting gap left by the headunit and also pulled through the shortened silver adjuster cables and then carefully put them back into the correct posistion.

(Head unit Detail)

Almost the same to behonest as above , Cut the wires to extend them . threaded them up through the gap left by the heater control panel Inserted the cage (I used some silicone cellant to glue this in place not a hole tubes worth though     two good lines worth)

Left to dry over night, clipped the power plug back into place then pushed back firmly into the cage  hay prestoooooooo

Only thing that I never did was extend the Radio cable , but this is quite easy to be honest

Some ones more than likely got a much better way of doing it ! . but theres just a rough rough guide

when i done mine i just jammed the flap so its on hot air all the time (in case of over heating   ) and blowing up and left the cables off didnt have to cut anything untill i put the screen in had to cut the clock bit out or when the screen opens it hit the indy stalk
