Hello Everyone !!!! Need some advices :)
« on: 18:10, Sun 10 January 2010 »
Hi guys, i just became an owner of R5 GTT 1989... The body work on the car is just fine, it needs some bits and pieces to be fully done.. But i got the problem with the engine and i need to see what moves should i make.

It has 1.4 engine, but turbo is taken off the car, because it was foocked :).
I was planning to fix the car for the 1/4 mile drag, so i need some advices...
I had a plan to fit either 1.8 16v or 2.0 16v williams engine, and then do some work on it, i am looking for about 200whp car, so should i seek for the 16valver engine or should i stick to the same 1.4 T engine, and buy new turbo and fix it up?
I would be pleased if u could tell me what is the easier way to start the project! Thanks in advance guys and i hope i hear from u all!!! !!

Regards from SERBIA!!!!!

200 BHP at the wheels is quite much for the original 1.4T. It can be done, but quite a lot has to be modified.

Think of:
- FMIC
- Bigger turbo (at about 1.8 Bar)
- Injection kit (no must have, but it certainly helps a lot!)
- Low compression pistons
- Sharper camshaft

Better to fit a 1.8 16V with a lower boost turbo conversion at around 0,9 / 1 Bar. It makes the car heavier at the front, so cornering will be different...

Or go for a F7R 2.0 16V twin-turbo with charge cooler and throttle boddies... :P Friend of mine has done a home-made conversion in his 5 and it's dangerously fast!! Around 300 BHP... Bye bye Ringtaxi! :P

Unfortunately the pics are offline, but I can post some later if you want... :)

The 1.8 seems to be more popular conversion then the 2.0.

Now i'm not quite sure why, i can only think of 2 reasons.

1. The 1.8 might be easier to tune/turbocharge (i'm thinking compression ratios etc)
2. The 2.0 engine is harder to find/more expensive.

Definately worth a good research before you choose which path to go down.
