Where are you in the country ??

Sounds like either the carb idle speed is too high, the choke is stuck open or the carb has an air leak/vacuum pipe is split somewhere.

ive also noticed that when hot and been stood for a bit its hard to start. could this be because my perc fan is'nt connected? this is how i brought it. ive heard that they start fires?!

I had this same problem buddy, the idle one. I changed my manifold to AEI hose for a new one and double checked everything was tight. I changed the one-way-valve to the servo too, only because I took it out to check it was working and snapped the thread off in the manifold when i was putting it back, not good :(

And my car takes a couple of turns to start up with out the perc fan, it can happen with it still fitted though.

Check if the plate is there between the inlet manifold & carb bottom, i ran with no perc fan but had this in place & had no hot start probs..

check the carb top for cracks. the sandard plastic ones can be a bugger.

cool, cheers. i checked for leaks but i can't notice anything, but ive never owned one of these, so cant be sure(i hav vw's usaully). i re-adjusted the idle to just over 1000rpm today, so i'll see wot happens next time i drive it lol
dunno if it matters or not but its got a k-tec fmic, twin dump valve's, cone filter and from wot i can tell standard turbo with a boost valve. it's running about 15psi. i dont wont the car to be boosting to high. is that boost ok?

Remove the dump valves, the diaphrams may be split & leaking ;)
