An air cooled Garret T2 turbocharger was also part of the package with a modified Renault 8 Gordini 1394cc engine. The body styling became even more subtle and the power was delivered at the front to the front wheels.
1988 - New improved version with various changes including the use of a water cooled turbocharger. this appeared on the phase 2 models and some very early phase 1 models at about the same time renault introduced the anti perculation fan , the final reg of the phase 1 models was plated as a E reg, and not a D reg
1989 - Received a new interior. red flecked seats , Rear spoiler, Colour coded bodykit one minor detail missing was on the wheel arch being the loss of the black vents , the front bumper gained a bottom lip instaid of the flat style , All phase 2 models where produced with electric windows ,

In 1991-92 the Renault 5 GT Turbo was retired on the very rare J'reg not H'reg the gt turbo was replaced by the Clio , Clio Williams this was due to the increasing number of complaints Renault recieved by the public regarding the ever failing 1397cc turbo engine , once production was siezed the 1397 turbo'd engine was shelfed hense why Renault stoped any production of turbo powerd cars , this is the main reason as to why Williams were asked into Renault to help produce a Reliable car !
