Starter Motor Issues.
« on: 18:23, Wed 01 August 2012 »
I fitted another starter motor to my car as the old one refused to turn over once it was warm.

I knew previously about the locating dowel, and I am sure I removed the dowel and fitted it into the same location on the replacement starter motor.

The replacement starter motor looked identical also.

However, it's grinding and I have noticed some wear on the teeth of the flywheel so I have decided not to crank the car over now until I have had another look.

I did notice that when fitting the new starter motor it was a little 'tight' pulling it up onto the gearbox casing where as the the old starter motor could be slipped up onto the casing by hand?

Could someone please post a picture/diagram. I found an old thread but  the link was removed.

Thank You.

Take the motor off and check the teeth for wear, make sure it has the correct number of teeth

The last one i put on my car was a tight fit compared to others.

Is this the picture you're after?

No, but it will do.

Drat. I have my dowel in that hole, i'm 99% sure of it. I will take it off and have a good look, maybe I have done something wrong. It's quite dark and mucky down there!

Some of the starter motors have a smaller cog on them thats why its grinding.

I haven't got around to removing the starter motor yet.

I gave the old one to my neighbour, who kindly offered to chuck it in the scrap metal bin at his work. Should of held onto it for a comparison!  :(

I took the starter motor off and everything seems in order. I also tryed the above, swinging the motor in either direction didn't cure the noise.

After a closer look it seems like the motor turns the engine just fine, it only grinds when I release the ignition key, almost as if the starter gear doesn't retract quick enough? If that's even possible.

Fixed.

Swapped it for a different one. Worked first time.  8)
