peoples views on using vnt turbo????

would like to know more about peoples opinions on using a vnt with the R5 i have my own views but would like to hear what others have to say as you can never have enough info lol

If it's been setup correctly it's an awesome turbo the spool of a T2 yet the power of a T3

Ultimate turbo for a gtt espeically when combined with a decent cam such as a 285 and timed correctly.

Only downside to the VNT is the setting up and getting it done correct it takes time and alot of patience.  Watch out for det aswell

Indeed I did run a VNT on my last C1J the same spec VNT you have on yours BLUE85GT they were made by turbo developments as a Limited edition thing there were 2 version's.  Once they are setup for how you want they are awesome. I set mine up so I had full boost @2500rpm and it would just keep pulling over 7.5k rpm's +

You can basically adjust the VNT to come in anywhere in the rev range you want  :mrgreen:  but you must have the fueling and I would also advise you to run full retard on the TDC sensor aswell and monitor for det / knock.  My main problem was det anything over 20psi and the engine would want to det prob didn't help with the engine being high comp.

I would love to help you setup matey but we have another baby due in 6-7 weeks so unfortunatly I have no time I can assist online and on the phone but not able to pop up and help out unfortunatly.  I am sure Markey Mark BD will more than happily help you out top bloke been around the 5 gtt for many years and has experience with VNT's as he also had one aswell.

Still the quickest out there for a VNT equipped 5  too  :wink:

They are very fiddly turbo to sort out, getting the vains right and actuator adjustment right does take time but as said once right it is blinding turbo. For me though i got so bored of setting mine up everytime engine spec changed so i sold it on.

One thing i will say is 99% of the time the car does need to run abit of ignition retard over 20psi, James has found out the hard way a few times running standard ignition  :wink:

found out the hard way lol how was that?? what did he pop or burst lol, i wanna get this running right i had it on the road five mins and head gasket went  :cry: is it running standard ignition still as im still a little confused now about full spec of engine i know emma done a lump whilst she owned it aswell, thanx markey all help will be gladly recieved

Head gasket failures I made the mistake of putting the TDC sensor back to standard and forgetting what happened the first time around I done it I done it againe :oops:  :lol:

Basically when I was running 23psi manifold I was experimenting with the TDC sensor and not using det can's :oops:  I put the TDC back to standard position and within 10 miles I popped a H/G, replaced h/g after checking everything fine and put TDC back to full retard and all good no more popping headgasket's. I also used Shell optimax fuel and my fueling was spot on for afr's.

Last time I done it was just outside the surrey meet went in a nice cloud of white pulled into the layby opposite the meet.

ok i need to get in touch with jimmy to find out whats the koo lol as to how he had it set. im sorta new with performance and lumps as im a car audio head at heart, but im keen on learning about the r5 as iv loved them for so long but never owned one. just from what a good mate told me i was able to strip down the head etc iv got the new head gasket, oil, coolent, sump washer etc but am reluctent on putting it back together as im not sure of what else to be checking before i do so. iv degreased it all and the top of the pistons look mint and liners kool too, also none of the push rods look damaged either only minor i can see is a fracture (very small) in the head gasket between cylinders 3 and 4

also before i stripped it down when it was still running my mate checked the plugs and cylinder 3 was the one that was wet and not firing, oil looked good and hadnt turnt to mush there was only some small signs of coolent when we removed the plug, any views people??
