crank seals

hi all, the dreaded crank seals seem to have gone on my 5 as yesterday we did the clutch and there was alot of oil in the gearbox bell housing and it seems to be pouring out of the pulley side of the engine too
always leaving big oil patches everywhere i park  
how big a job is replacing them??
and how much am i looking at??

Thats engine out, sump off, flywheel off, loosing all main caps off but taking one nearest flywheel off, lift crank slightly and pull seal out then fit new one.

Cost will depend on if you do it or you get someone else to do it

how hard a job is it?? and how much to pay someone to do it you reckon??
do you have to replace any other parts??

Its not a hard job if the engine is out the car, if its still in the car thats the hard bit really as its abit of work removing it.

Not you'll only need to replace the crank seal as not much else has to come off, obviusly you'll need to reseal the sump so some gasket sealent is needed.

Cost wise, for example if i was given just the engine i'd say £70 including the seal. If engine was still in car then it'll be £270 but thats me.

is it just the one seal on the flywheel end then mark?? cos thats the only one mentioned in the haynes manual, it is defo leaking outa both ends

There is a crankshaft seal on the flywheel end of the engine.

However, there are also 'half-moon' type seals at each end of the sump. It might be that which is leaking.

nah defo not them, had sump off twice and replaced them with new ones both times and well sealed them and the sump on

Only the one round seal on the flywheel end, there are the half moon seals on the sump as mentioned before
Not saying you haven't sealed the sump up right but i have seen people try 3-4 times and never get it to seal, i found some stuff that never leaks so always use it but costs about £12 a tub.

I'll have to get name of it out the garage tomorrow, Euro Car Parts sell it since buying it i use nothing else.

Also when you fit the sump do you put sealent on the area where the seals sit on the sump too?

yeah i put loads on cos had em leak from there before.
ive been pricing up the seals and cgb have em for alot cheaper than renault but are they any good or would you recomend i spend the nearly £40 on genuine renault seals???
specially as they only about a tenner for the pair at cgb

I have a pair from CGB on my car at the moment, never given me any trouble.

Also you might want to give the complete cork style gasket a miss if you were thinking about that, i'm sure James5 gave it a bad review. Not very good at all.

Defo keep away from the cork gasket leaked like a right bugger, first time I used one, never again.

Stick with the sealant I even used the sealant on the U seals aswell never had a leaky sump or problems in doing so
