hey guys the seals arrived for my turbo today so have rebuilt it and fitted it to the car, had it running and there was a tiny amount of black smoke come out of the exhaust and after 5 minutes the body of the turbo started to smoke (oily hands?) the thing i'm really unsure about is that the boost gauge was at minus half a bar when idling and when i pushed the accelerator it just went up to zero bar, is this because the car was not underload? first time with a turbo car i really don't know  :oops:  :?  :?  :?  :oops:

That all sounds pretty normal  

Smoke out the back could be burning off what ever was left in the exhaust from the turbo letting go before. Just keep a good eye on the oil level and how long it keeps smoking for.
Smoking outside could be oil and what ever gunk has gotten onto it while you've been repairing it.
And when the car is on idle, it'll be drawing a vacuum which is what your gauge is showing. You'll get the positive pressure showing when the engine is under load and the turbo spools up
