How do ya tell the difference between a phase one engine and a phase 2 thanks people

There is no difference i don't think.

Phase 2 will have a knock sensor fitted to the cylinder head, also the turbo oil drain is a different size.

There's a few other differences.
The header tank in a longer, flatter kind on a phase one, and the coolant pipes are different, you'll notice more by the water pump as there'll be no swirl pot and more bleed nipples.
The throttle cable goes to a pivot thingy on a phase one and has a shorter cable, where the phase two loops right round.
The phase one has extra bits on the exhaust manifold, which make it a pain to remove/tighten the nuts.
The aei unit will be engine side of the bulk head, unless it's been removed.
The oil return for the sump is smaller, and on early ones they were baffled.
There's a few other bits but they don't make a lot of difference.

Ok thanks guys great help is there a way to tell a phase 2 shell to a phase 1 meaning if ya had a phase 1 body put someone put the phase 2 body kit on how could u no ?

Engine code is also another way to tell. 788 is later models

Reg plate of car is a pretty good way to work out what kit your car should have if its a D plate or older it would have been a phase 1, e - reg is crossover so would have phase 2 kit but some engine and internals of the car will still be phase 1, f reg and newer would be phase 2 painted kits
