Car failed the MOT today!! Hand break isn't doing anything
and he said I need a new steering rack rod because it has some excess play
He said there's a ball joint just under the boot in there that has play does that sound rite to you guys I've never looked beyond the boots to see

sounds like normal stuff

you'll need a new track rod end and then you will need wheel alignment as it will be out after the end is changed

handbrake.... possibly just a new set of cables or adjusting up

Depending on what steering columm you have there is a UJ under the boot at the base of the columm, thay are prone to wearing out. No need for new rack just need to change that.

A trackrod end is basically a ball joint, so that kind of makes sense. Also check the UJ at the steering rack to column joint as above.

The rear brakes themselves must be working if he didn't flag those up, so it must just be down to the handbrake cables, try adjusting them first. If they go tight then just go slack again there's a good chance there frayed somewhere.

It's not the track rod end it's the actual rod that connects to the rack itself under the boot or something along those lines and I think it's just the cables like you say the rears are working but the handbreak isn't it is probably all the hand break turns in the snow  :lol:
