what is the round cylinder type device with foam around it that sits behind the carb on the bulkhaed?,It has a pipe going from it into the anti perc fan and 1 going to the induction pipe and whats its purpose,

also what is the 2 pin brass sensor on the side (passenger) of the carb for?.

could any of these cause my car to eratically idle from stalling to constant 1500rpm,the revs seem to hold high for a few seconds before dropping???

Lee - the two pin brass sensor is part of hte overboost switch AFAIK.

it says in the haynes manual its the temp control for the anti perc fan on the side of the carb?,the wires from it went to the sensor on the turbo heatshield,still drawing a blank on the thing on the bulkhead though,i've google imaged engine bay pics and some dont even run it at all and the anti perc fan is removed???

still need help.

It's some kind of solenoid for the anti perc fan setup.

I binned mine a long time ago, i doubt it's the cause of your idling issue.

Yep - anti perc.

I agree, i had this problem took me an age to find turns out it was a leaky dump valve diaphragm (what was annoying was id bought it brand new many years ago and it had never been used but it just perished  :x ) anyway i think the best way to find an air leak is to have the car running then spray all your vacuume pipes, dump valve etc with carb cleaner if the car runs sweet for a split second after spraying then you know where the air leak is :wink:

i thought air leak too,had inlet manifold off for brake servo,it ran fine for a bit but not happy now,take off and re-seal later.

Clean idle jet & also check one way valves on inlet manifold.

carb and inlet manifold off and re-sealed...still the same,my temp gauge in the car has stopped working,could that be a factor?,i've removed anti perc fan and solenoid valve now too but that made no difference either?

still need help :cry:

The temp gauge cable could have just come off matey as you have been working in that area, it is the green and orange cable that goes on the back of the water pump there is a sensor there.

Have you cleaned out the idle jet on the carb yet, normally first point of call when have rough idle

its not so much rough its high and work come down,when its lowered it cuts out.

temp plugs are on,also when the revs are up and down temp overheat light on the temp gauge flickers?

right people...bit of an update,

I took the lobster of and ran the car,it appeared there was a drip of fuel every second or so then the car would rev up,i took the carb top of and the idle jet was clear,i took the jet out of the side of the carb and cleaned that,i also gave the tiny tube that goes down into the carb a clean too and resealed the carb,when i started it the revs were still high but constant,i've lowered the idle and it seems steady so far,it still holds revs as you rev up but not for long but theres been a new mixture needle fitted too so the fuels gonna need setting up

so far so good,as for the temp gauge i swapped the wires round an its working LOL

I'll try a drive tomorrow and update but i'm optimistic so far!
