Renault 5 GT Turbo / oil pressure sender thread size?
« on: 17:06, Wed 23 September 2009 »
does anyone know the thread size of the oil pressure sender?

I'm going to fit a capillary oil pressure gauge and need to know what size adaptor I need to attach it where the original sender fits.

Hope that makes sense :-)

I know CGB sell one but I'm getting a Stack gauge from Demon Tweeks and wanted to buy the lot from there.

Renault 5 GT Turbo / How do I fix piston slap?
« on: 22:19, Tue 15 September 2009 »
Can I just replace the pistons and rings only or is it better to replace the liners also?

part number is R-801015 and it's 67

it's meant to be very good for the money, I would have bought one if I wasn't so skint. Standard clutch on my car seems to be good for at least 1 Bar of boost.

Most people on here will recommend the valeo clutch for the renault 5 from GSF as it is proven to hold up to 200bhp, so I'm told :-)
The clutch for the Volvo 440 turbo engine also fits the non turbo 1.7, the 1.7 GTX Renault 5 and a few other different engines. I hope someone in the know reads this thread and can enlighten us.

All I really want to hear is that a 1.7 Volvo clutch will probably be stronger than the OE renault 5 turbo clutch

I suppose it can depend on the quality of the friction material of the clutch just like better brake pads are the same size as normal ones but stop you better different clutches can be the same diameter but not necessarily the same grip, it also depends on the strength of the spring in the clutch cover plate.

Renault 5 GT Turbo / Is this clutch any good?
« on: 16:56, Sun 13 September 2009 »
Just bought this clutch from fleabay, will it be any good? I'm only running about 140bhp and will only ever be putting about 165bhp through it. ... K:MEWNX:IT

If it's a load of shite then it's no real loss as I need the release bearing anyway.

I was under the impression that running without a thermostat was very bad as the water flows too quickly and can create hot spots as it's flowing too fast and not properly cooling the engine

great, that's what the Haynes says. I'll get hold of a timing light and see if it's working.

Renault 5 GT Turbo / How do I test the knock sensor?
« on: 21:43, Mon 07 September 2009 »
does anyone know how to check the knock sensor is functioning properly?

I seem to have what I suspect is slight pinking when revved from idle and under load at low revs and would like to check it's working correctly.

today I have mostly been making a bracket for my collins -31 actuator!

gor the actuator for 26 quid from fleabay :-) Bargain. Actuator is the long rod type from a cosworth so I knocked up a bracket from 3mm mild steel but it flexed quite a bit when I fitted it so I put some extra bracing on it and that seems to do the job. Boost seems to be a little crisper now or maybe it's all in my head but it does look nice in the engine bay :-)

took it out on the road and it went fine but then started to do the same fault! Brought it back home and put an even stiffer spring on, seems to have sorted it but if you let it idle for about 30 seconds it will hesitate slightly again, it's better but not perfect. RR or AFR gauge needed soon I think.

it appears that it was a lean condition causing the lag, I have just put a stiffer spring on the accelerator pump rod and it revs fine now, will just have to give it a road test when I've fettled the exhaust.

14psi carb top? Drove it today with it boosting to the beginning of the red section on the gauge and it feels fast enough for now.

It's just that I'm impatient for more power but I suppose an engine rebuild is a big price to pay.

Roll on pay day and a STACK AFR gauge :-)

16psi carb top would be about half way through the red part of the standard gauge? Maybe a little less to be safe-ish :-)

If it goes pop at least it will be fun until then. maybe just drill the second stage out to 1.1mm then.
