Renault 5 GT Turbo / Distributor,strange sound...
« on: 01:19, Sat 27 September 2008 »
As the subject says, for a while now my 5 has been making some strange squeeling noises, espesially when cold. At first i thought it was the altornator belt, I later found out that the sound was coming from th distributor. Has anyone here experied anything like that before? And is it alot of work changing the distributor? Not just the cap and rotor, the whole thing. Is it possible that something could be bent in there, since ther sound gets worse if you push lightly on the cap?

Hmmm I have a brand new oil cooler colleting dust in the garage, tho I guess its going to be quite expensive.

However I cant say I look forward to taking the engine out and rebuild it, as it looks like a hell of a job. And of course the possibility that the engine wont start when its put back in. :?

What vnt do you suggest i should use? If I get all the upgrades youve suggested that is.

Is it hard to make the special elbow?

I have tons of questions

1,7 is pretty extreme. Hmm well it looks like ill be saving for a while then. I take it that it ups the bhp and torque radically at lower rpm, that must be killer in drag races and of course autoslalom.

Ive seen a few vids on youtube today about the vnt, and i must say its far beyond impressing.

Renault 5 GT Turbo / vnt!

I figured since weve occupied the turbo fooked thread so much, that we could have a pure vnt tread.

Anyway on the setup im running, not that i know whats done to the internals of the engine, I have run 1,5bar for a period of 3 months earlier, no pinking. Im running a safe 1,2bar atm on a standard T3.
And i was wondering if anyone could tell me what might have been done to the engine so i know what parts i most likely have to change before fitting a vnt.

I know its not an easy question to answer but still, I dont think the original engine should be able to cope with 1,5bar. So my guess is that something must have been done to it.

Oh and yeah this thread is supposed to contain talk about VNT`s, its just that I want to know how my 5 would cope with one.

Yeah well Id rather change the exhaust side of the turbo to a smaller one, than going for a smaller turbo. Its just something about the insane kick when the turbo reaches full boost on a big turbo.

The reason why I want a vnt is because theres only short racetracks near Bergen, that said, I need less lag. At the same time I want it to be usable on the drag strip, which means large turbo...

Anyway I just love the idea of instant boost :)

Sounds like a plan for next winter then, only this year left before Im done at school.

Im unsure of what my engine internals are so I guess its going to be a full rebuild, when not if I get myself a vnt.

Hmm... Now I need to get a Vnt... Btw what parts need to be changed, as I guss it must be pretty brutal when you get 1,5bar at 2800rpm. I only run 1,2 atm but the lag with the T3 is killing me...

Thanks :)

Yep, I really like the way it fills out the mesh in the front bumper.
I must admit that im proud of the work Ive put into the car the last year, I would have done more if it wernt for the F#"% short on money bit
Being a student doesnt help either so after next summer, it might just come quite a few new mods on it  :D  I cant wait :)

Well i dont think thatll be a problem as when its time for MOTs i can allways change back to the Konis and use the original front bumper, and change back again the day after

I dont really know how the rules in Norway are when it comes to air suspension. But if I get Renault to accept it then suddenly its legal... Guess ill just wait and see what happens.

Hehe I was born in Bergen :)

1200 is alot i know but still its worth it if i get a car that can drive over speedbumps :P

When it comes to the air suspension I just googled for it and found the site. I have no idea if they are up and running or not to be honest.
