Renault 5 GT Turbo / Re: Gearbox : Choices
« on: 19:37, Thu 21 January 2010 »
On cold day with no passengers I can get to about 110. If I could change from 4th to 5th earlier I think I may be able to get another 5-10 mph.

I think ill go for a 172 box. With the 4.07 final drive it will accelerate faster than standard box and when I come to fit a piper 285 cam i will be able to reach same speed in 4th at higher revs if I cant get into 5th. (4.07 at 6800rpm = 113.1mph)

I use it for track days  and I want quicker acceleration through the gears. I have spotted a gearbox for a Clio RSI on Ebay. The final drive of this is the same as 9/11 Turbo.(4.07). I am not concerned about speedo drive but am unsure if the original R5 driveshafts would fit this box. Will they ?

As far as I know 440 gearboxes run a 3.73 final drive, the same as R5.

The problem I have with a 3.73 final drive is on the track I get to maximum in 4th gear and their is not enough track to change to 5th.

The higher final drive would get me to maximum speed in 4th quicker and give me sufficient track space to accelerate in 5th and hence give me an extra 10mph before the corner. The other alternative would be to rev the car more but with a standard cam this is pointless as I have passed peak power.

3.73 Final Drive Theoretical Speeds @6250
4th 113.5mph

3.73 Final Drive @6800
4th 123.4mph

4.07 Final Drive @6250
4th  104 mph
5th  132.7 mph

The final drive in a 172 is 4.07 the problem is the cost of this box in relation to others. Do the R5 driveshafts and clutch fit this ?

Sorry, should have mentioned. I would be after a gearbox with ratios/final drive that improve acceleration but lower stop speed.

I am looking for a gearbox for my Gt Turbo. I have tried to source one from a R9/11 Turbo as the different final drive improves acceleration albeit at the expense of top speed.  Problem is they are like hens teeth.

Is there any other gearbox that I can use (Clio etc ?)

Would this one fit ?

I work in the fire service and unfortunately this is quite common. Now that the schools are back there is a drive to let 5th years and above see this video. You should also see some of the stuff that 5th gear have done over the years.

4x4 crashing side on into car.
rear end pile up on motorway.
2 cars exact same sitting at different heights. This is the one that got me.
car hitting a tree.
2 cars head on.
old model and newer model head on.

We sometimes enter a false sense of security when we drive our cars and it is only when we see what actually happens when cars crash into each other that we drive with more care. I am guilty of this as well.

On the motorway yes.

In the spring and summer months I use mine daily and can do 400 miles in a week easy.Just keep on top of it and check levels, tyres etc frequently.

If you use high boost then perhaps turn it down a bit for cruising at 60-70mph. It aint needed and you will save some fuel.

Try an external usb mouse. This will then allow you to do various checks (anti virus, driver,  software etc to establish what is wrong. Once it is fixed then you can then revert to in built mouse.

Being an old git and working in the motor trade in the 80s I had the good fortune to drive a lot cars of that era that were anything between new and 3 years old. Some of them include :

Xr3i
205gti
rs turbo
golf gti 16v
mg montego turbo
strada abarth
delta turbo not 4wd one
audi quattro(original turbo one ur)
astra gte
manta gte
m3 (e30)
nova sr
mg metro turbo
mg maestro
Uno turbo
cavalier sri
audi 80 sport
sierra xr4i
capri 2.8
sierra rs 500

I remember the first time I drove a R5. We got a trade in phase 1 that had 4000 miles on the clock. One of the guys after having been a road test came up to me and said you really need to drive this car. I thought its only a R5 but when I took it for a spin I was blown away.

Bear in mind that most poor people like myself couldnt afford to buy those cars and when finished work would jump into a cortina 2.0 or a fiat 131 tc. There was no comparison.

Looking at the rear wheels with 195/45 15 on it there is very little space between the edge of the tyre and the rear bumper. 26mm approx. If this is an issue I suppose I could drill new holes on bumper side mounts and move the bumper back a bit.

Once I managed to get the car up high enough it wasnt as bad a job as I thought.

CGB are asking 60.00 plus carriage for sh one, dont know how much a new one is.

I had the same problem. The tank would only seal for a couple of days. Eventually I gave up and got a second hand one from Bob at CGB.
