Have fun with the rebuild!

I know what it's like having to rush a job knowing you need the car back on the road the following morning. Having other transport means you can take your time, things generally finish up better this way.  8)
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 08:10, Thu 09 December 2010
i know its crap when you have to rush. but the escort has 6 months tax so can take that long if i want. lol looking forwerd to it. have big plans!!!

What plans you got for it mate?
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 08:18, Tue 14 December 2010
well! lol
going to take the head off get that tested and skimed and ported and polished. basicly what k tec do for 500 quid. but know a guy at jan speed who has done his own and is only charging me 300 for the lot.
then take block out clean and paint that. while the bay is empty gona smooth that and paint it and if i can move some stuff. battery, water tank. relocate my air filter as i dont like where it is.
check everything for rust. but i know the hole frunt end has been done in the past few years so should be good. change the gear linkage. break lines.rewire fogs.fit new manafold.put all back together.

then start on the inside. take all the carpets out and clean them. or replace them. wana get bucket seats and maybe a roll cage. but dont know yet.
gona remove back seats as there never used.so paint and smooth the floor.
sort out a few dents and scratches. replace some window seals.

ummmm. think thats it. lol
i got 3/4 months to do it as going to nurburg ring in may. and wana make sure shes running rite first. so rolling road and set her up again.

what do you think???
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: nadgtt1982 on 11:48, Tue 14 December 2010
Sounds like your gonna have a busy winter  8)  , have fun tidying up the boot/back seat area it took me ages getting the sound deadning off its like tar i ended up using a blow torch and burning it off , id go for a cage myself but not one of them polished mickey mouse ones they look alright but if your going to all the trouble of putting one in you want it to work and not fold up on you should you have a crash, keep us posted with lots of pics even small jobs, as they say a picture speaks a thousand words
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 14:30, Tue 14 December 2010

To be honest mate its not much gain porting the head out unless your going mega power and even then head needs to be sorted in the right areas (need to know head), i wouldn't recommend polishing it at all though.

Its easy to obtain 220bhp+ on a standard head so i'd prob say save your money mate.

You did that the arkward way leaving the turbo still in the car!

Did you find anything when you pulled the head off/
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 20:31, Tue 28 December 2010
Really? Lol I just undid the 4 bolts on the turbine housing and pulled it away. Gota take it off anyway. But was starting to get cold lol
Yeah the gasket had only just gone in the middle of the centre two bores. Apart from that all looks good. Was fairly simple really.

One thing I did want to find out was about a copper head gasket?????
What are your views?

I normally just undo downpipe, the oil feed and return then lift it off with head.

Nothing wrong with a normal gasket mate, i tend to use either standard (red seal) or thicker (blue seal) gaskets depending on whats been done to the engine. If car is set up nicely then the standard style gaskets are more than strong enough.
I wouldn't worry spending your money on copper gaskets, there's absolutely no need for them.
I would use the stronger 12.9 bolts though and torque it down litle more thatn standard.

I bit of advise i was told years ago, think of the head gasket as a fuse if something goes wrong you want cheapest thing to break first, headgasket being the cheapest.

Post by: smithyr5gt on 23:20, Tue 28 December 2010
Thanks mate that's good advice. U have saved me lots of money. I o u a pint or two. Ha ha.
Going to go strip the head tomorrow and send that off to get skimmed. Then start tidying up the bay.
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 15:22, Thu 30 December 2010
rite just been over to the lock up. feel rough today with this bug thats going round. so didnt do to much. striped the head down, water pump etc. then took down pipe off as i need to wrap that and need to modify the turbine housing and elbow. as they dont match up.

will put pics up soon.

Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 20:05, Fri 31 December 2010
o yes mate i have not sure if i have put them on hear. head went off to jan speed today to be sorted. cant wait to get that back. got a good deal there to.
cleaning and sorting the bay at the mo. making new alloy brackets and stuff to tidy up the bay.
going to clear everything from the back of the front seats to the boot lid so she is totaly back to the paint work as i never take anymore than one in the car at a time anyway. re-locate the battery.(need help with this) air filter re-locate. paint the block and gear box. god loads realy. going to go to town on her but to a budget as im getting married in june and saving for that.
good thing is the wife to be loves the r5 so is cool with everything i do to her. ( my second wife)  :D .

went over today made a few adjustments. will put pics up tomorrow. taken out the anti-perc fan (so if anyone wants it just ask.) and the mettle pipe from back of the trbo elbow to the lobstar. aparantly there rare now. but im lucky have all o.e parts on the car. even the original heat sheat over the turbo with sensor.

anyway enough for now.

happy new year peeps!!!!!!

The 'green thing'?

Something to do with the anti-perc fan setup.
Title: Re: MY BABY

I agree with Ash-Lee. It's the resistance of your anti-perc fan mate. Latest models ph2 only.

Great! I really don't like the look of that hole bracket and bits on it so am going to make a new bracket that sits flush with the skutel instead of sticking out into the bay.

Things are going well!!!! So far! Ha ha

Just incase anyone is interested I'm selling my seats.

I would do mate, don't know if you know but its a constant 12v so it always has 12v going round it even with car swtiched off.

Its the 5's most prone bit to catch fire
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 19:07, Mon 03 January 2011
its funny a friend of mine has told me the same thing. ( that they catch fire) thats one reson why i took it out. i will sort that as soon as i can get back in to the lock up.

dose anyone know why they do this????
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: nadgtt1982 on 14:25, Tue 04 January 2011
please correct me if im wrong but i dont think the wiring is fed into a fuse, its just a constant 12v running throught it all the time so if anything goes wrong theres not a fuse there to break the circuit which proburly ends up melting the wiring etc, im sure if im wrong someone will correct me   .
Title: Re: MY BABY

hi guys. rite small update. went over to work shop on weekend and fitted the braided brake hoses. went ok had to make the mountain bracket hole bigger as the new ones were slightly bigger than the old standard ones.but all good.
got the gear linkage out in the end. took nearly 2 hours and a lot of shouting. broke it in the end to so need a new one. ready to put the shorter linkage in.

allso spoke to my mate from janspeed who is sorting the head. he tells me i hav a one off head!!! get this its never been skimmed!!!!  :D  happy days.
hes porting and polishing it for me as he cant just leave it as it is. hes a good lad.
hes allso going to make me a elbow/down pipe for me as the standard is a bit shit really. so it will be a one peace instead of two. all good.
will get some pics up later as im at work at the mo.

Is he on here? i would have been interested in one but my enlarged downpipe wasnt the same size as the start of the mid section exhaust so i got Peter (5 mission) to just weld them together its abit of aggro getting it out but touch wood i wont have to do that  Get some pics up when its made
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 13:48, Mon 10 January 2011
no hes not. i keep trying to get him on hear but he says hes always to busy. lol
if he did he would have a build thread about 20 pages long. hes spent 6 years and 25 grand on his 5.
il put a pic of his engine up tonight he said i could just havent got round to it yep.
its mentle.
he has even changed every oil pipe for braided lines. so ground off all standard fittings and welded new screw on fixings all over the place took him ages. lol

its a really nice car. standard outside but running about 270bhp.
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: markey mark (bd) on 16:37, Mon 10 January 2011

yeah i have never seen paperwork but i have never met anyone who can do what he dose to an engine.
hes one of janspeeds best race engine builders. and has buit the engine from scratch. so i do trust his word but we will see as the have a rr.....
il try get him on hear.
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: nadgtt1982 on 21:22, Mon 10 January 2011
Thats a nice engine bay lots of original ideas there (from what i know of anyway  ). Did your mate fabricate the boost pipes himself? Also how does the air filter get air in?

If it is a genuine bhp figure i take me hat off to him, but even if it isnt id still take it off for him    . Get him to put a thread up i reckon i could learn a few things from the pics you have put up.

Don't take this wrong way mate but rolling road paperwork don't mean much.

Whats he done to it exactly then? Am interested as i like to see what others do to them.

I know some C1J lumps out there that are out of this world, the drag strip is best way to determine power. Not from the times but the terminal speed at the end (mph).

Does look nice though under there, not trying to put anyone done but after nearly 10yrs with C1J's there not much haven't seen.

not to sure what he has done in total just know some bits. the air filter gets air through a vent in the wing then through a hole in the inner wing.

yeah all the pipes are made by him. everything on there he has done. he has forge pisons and liners. umm il see if i can get some spec off him.

it is about time he came on hear. lol

Gurted for you mate. But you may not need new calipers or are they shafted anyway?
I did the exact same but on my rear caliper this weekend - was raging!
I have just dropped the caliper down at an engineers machine shop and they reckon it should be ok to get it out after some careful drilling. Hopefully get it back before the end of the week too 8)

Ha ha yeah rite. I'd be the same but my gardens not even that big I don't think plus I'd have to crane the car over the house. Lol can't see that.

Been over again tonight. Got all the oil and water pipes on. Dizzy cap.
Found I only have two bolts to hold the rocker arm down. Not good.
Moved the expansion tank though to the other side. So really happy about that. More room for the air filter.
Going over again tomorrow night. Ha ha I may as well stay there the week.

pipe work is a mock up as i am having solid alloy ones made. so no joiners apart from the ones at each end.

any way. she still isnt alive. cant get her to turn over. theres loads of life in the battery but i get nothing from the starter motor at all.  :?
Title: Re: MY BABY

Whats happening, Will it not turn over at all?
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 17:16, Sun 06 February 2011
no mate im stumped.it seems as if theres no power going to the starter motor.
i didnt tuch any of that while doing the job and it all seems where it should be.
think there was an imobaliser in the car at some point but i have never had a problem like this before after taking the battery off.
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: tubbyG on 18:08, Sun 06 February 2011
Have you checked all the earths?
I had the same symptoms, When I had the head off I had forgotten to reconnect the earth that bolts to the head on one of the inlet manifold bolts. Not sure if it was meant to connect there tho.
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: Ash-Lee on 19:17, Sun 06 February 2011
Check you haven't knocked the small wire going to the starter motor solenoid.

If your wiring is anything like mine it could probably do with cleaning up anyway.
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 20:15, Sun 06 February 2011
arrr! earth. dont remember taking one off of the head. but i will check tomorrow. thanks mate.

the little solenoid wire is in place i checked that earlier. and the large gray one from the battery.

im hopeing its the earth now. that would be easy.

thanks guys.
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: Ash-Lee on 21:34, Sun 06 February 2011
The earth should be on the engine block, very close to the drivers side suspension turret. I think it bolts on to the engine lifting point.

There is also a small one on the front of the engine block, very close to the sump. I don't think there is one on the cylinder head.
Title: Re: MY BABY

Title: Re: MY BABY

Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: Ash-Lee on 08:12, Tue 08 February 2011
To be fair, there not all that bad.

A lot of it is just normal wear and tear. I for example seem to replace more running gear/suspension parts etc and the odd electrical gremlin. I don't really suffer from engine related failures.
Title: Re: MY BABY

are you good with electrics mate?

need some wisdom from u guys.
lifted the oill filler cap today and theres mayo in it. not alot just a bit. now i have my ideas but want to conferm them??

and allso had a bit of good luck. went to pick up the callipers from my mate and he gives me a fully working engine and gear box out of a phase 2. lol if only it was a few weeks ago :(

anyway i think a track car is on the cards with a little somthing special under the bonnet!!!!!!
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: Ash-Lee on 20:38, Tue 08 February 2011
You might be panicking for no reason.

It's quite common to see mayo on the oil cap on any car, it's probably just condensation. Especially if it's been standing or you only do short trips.

Time to worry is when there's mayo on the dipstick.
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 21:11, Tue 08 February 2011
ha ha. yep got it there to.

see i was told as i have just done the head gasket there may still be some water lying around in pipes and the block. and it may take a few oil flushes to clear it.
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: markey mark (bd) on 21:17, Tue 08 February 2011
Drain the oil out and refill it again, this should clear all the old stuff out. More than likely abit of water in the oil ways still or condensation as mentioned.

I did that once but i managed to find it before it went right through i only melted the yellow outer plastic. You could just solder some more cable in then put some heat shrink around bare cable, it would also give you some more lenght to run the cable away from the turbo etc.

What a nightmare! :(    Looks like a replace the rear arch job at least but nothing more serious from the looks. My car's nearly fallen down off it's 3 and a half foot axle stands a few times which was pretty scary! I reckon we all have our fair share of problems with these cars.. I took my rear seat back out today and the n/s foam wheel arch liner and found more rust if it's any consolation.
Thought I'd finished the last of the welding as well!

yeah its one thing after another it seems. but i keep telling myself once its done it should be ok for a few....... weeks?? lol

and the one thing i am lucky with is rush. theres some spots of serface rust but thats it. the car is solid. and im so chuffed about that as i cant weld.

Certainly is! I've done this job recently it's not too bad. I used coated copper pipe as it won't rust and is nice and flexible. I found bending it to copy the shape of the pipes I was replacing was the easiest way of making them up. You'll have to keep taping the two together along the length as you form your new one or you'll never do it as it'll move all over the place. And don't forget to get your unions on before flaring the ends!
I think someone on ebay makes up brakelines for the gtt if you don't wanna do it yourself. :D

It is quite tight in there around the compensator, I was able to make small turns with open end of a spanner, but had to keep turning it over as there was so little room. I'm sure someone on here mentioned someone who made brakelines up on ebay?!
Don't know if this is the same bloke or not?

Small update as it's been a while.
Rite breaks are all sorted. Apart from hand brake cables but paying my mate to do them while I'm at work.
And the other half reminded me last week that my tax and mot is up at the end of the month!!! Great more money.
So cars booked in for not sat at ten.

And best result of all is. Went to my local scrappy today for a wonder round and came across a Renault 29 that looked like it had been covered in pitstick and driven through halfords.
BUT! Said chave had a set of momo non-reclining bucket seats. Few rips and a fag burn.... But for 40 I couldn't say no!!!! Ha ha ha!

Small update. Car was meant to be in for mot yesterday but after bleeding the brakes twice I still had nothing so had to cancel it.
So decided to wait another month and fix the wheel arch and do some other Tidying up jobs. Did wheel arch today looks good an is strong so that's good just need to paint it.
Finished and fitted the heat sheald that looks great very happy with that.
In the week il paint the arch and refit it.

Got my mate coming round with some sort of blead pump pressure thing to see what's up with the brakes. I think it's the master cylinder.

Going to fit the buckets to.
Them I'm going to clean the poor girl she's minging!!!

Umm im not liking the fact your having trouble bleeding your brakes, thats a job im not looking forward to with mine  , getting there tho fella it seems like your having one thing go wrong after another :(
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: tubbyG on 11:39, Mon 28 March 2011
I had the same trouble with bleeding the rear brakes, I renewed all the copper pipework and fitted some braided lines 2 and it seemed to take forever for the fluid to come through. It was a little awkward but With the car on the deck I found the fluid to flow out the calipers much better
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 12:59, Mon 28 March 2011
your not wrong there fella. one thing after another. but hay keeps me busy.
and i would say fit a new master before you even try.

well i have just borrowed one of them pressure blead kits. worked great...... for one maybe two pumps of the pedal. then soft again.
so master cylinder it is then. and thats not going to be an easy job.

o and just sat with the futer wife to work out how much we still had to save for the wedding and.... well put it this was car is going to be sorn and will have no MOT for the next two months. so looks like she wont be on the road for a while. bit depressed
Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: markey mark (bd) on 18:11, Mon 28 March 2011
You sure you haven't got air trapped in the rear bias valve mate, when bleeding the system i normally hold the bias valve open so fluid flows through it nicely.

Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 20:55, Fri 01 April 2011
rite guys i am at my last drop of patience and as you all know i have quite a lot!!!

i have blead the brakes twice with a pressure kit and they where ok for about one/two pumps of the pedel and then went to the floor again.

what am i doing wrong?
i got the master cylinder today and started to take the old one off and one of the unions rounded off. so i really dont want to have to cut the pipe and crawl under the car and replace more copper pipeing.

could it be anything else other than the cylinder?

im really stuck with this and all you guys live miles away!!!

I was told by cliford it was broken and I needed a new alarm.

Well had it fixed for 21:50. Happy man.

So set to work on vacuum pipe and putting carb and battery back on.

Alarm works great and doors lock again. Yeah!!!

I used a slighly smaller holesaw, then carefully filed away for a really tight fit. Then you need to find a welder.

I wouldnt worry about that dude, it should be ready to use when you wip it out of the box.

I think....     the bit you are referring to is only going to come into play if you were to use a different o2 sensor other than the one supplied with the gauge

So happy mate all I need to do now is link up the handbrake cables. Fit the afr and piller pods, tax and mot.  :D

Best of getting a standard venturi cab and jetting that, you can jet the group a carb but it will need a larger main jet down to the fact it has a large venturi and needs this to compensate for the lack of venturi effect / mix, what ever you do it is still going to use more fuel than a standard venturi carb

Title: Re: MY BABY
Post by: smithyr5gt on 17:49, Sun 15 May 2011
Well long story. Lol
It's push button start and fuel pump.
When my other half dropped my keys she broke the fob. Clifford said I would need a new alarm as they don't do that fob anymore.
Because the alarm was still active it had shut everything down so I bypass it all so I could start it.

Then I found a place in London that said they may be able to fix the fob.
21 pound later I got my alarm back and everything works fine. So il be taking it out soon and having it as normal.

Was a bit of a waste of money but hay lesson learned! Lol
