The open filter in combination with high boost and a DV sounds great...

I have no idea if there is a big difference between a piston-DV or the one with a membrane... I know that the piston-DV definitely produces a marvelous sound in combination with an open airfilter.

But beware: make sure the airfilter is able to breathe in cool air! Otherwise you will have a nice sound, but loss of power.

Apparently different hose lengths, thickness and material can change the noise it makes as well. From quite a deep sound to something that sounds like a flock of pigeons under the bonnet.

Have a search for 'Dose pipe' i think the Americans call it?  :?

I believe this is what you are requiring , !

Its Obviously about AM spec air filters that echo the 'Compressor Surge' , but its also down to the pipes and a short piece of metal tubing , I only know this as I stand in ore of my mates FRST as it sounds like a chip munk going down the road

Any ways , watch this through and it should be what your after

Cheers matt, not a bad sound compared to the d/v!  :D
think a need a change
has this been known to cause any damage to the turbo? yeah a heard a few RST's they sound awesome!!
What pipes or 'metal tubing' am a needing? is it just the pipe for the AM filter to the turbo?
Bare with me as a aint got a clue

I used a 90 degree bend preff the smallest you can get a away with fitting and then used a small peace of tubing maybe perhaps ... 5 inches long bout 1'' 1/2 wide , then a cotton filter

Nope no damage can be caused in IMO ive seen 350 - 400 bhp cossies, FRST , Pulsurs and Evo's running with out a DV and they dont have issues ,

Personal choice in my Mind ! , I go for the Compressor surge noise ,

Thats wot a was thinkin, if is good enough for the WRC cars then its good enough for ma 5!!!

Cheers matt, al have a look 2moro at a filter and a 90 deg pipe! a guess its better with a 9o degree hose because it'l face towards the grill and away from the hot turbo?
A knw some people use the telephone bend, what is it you've got m8?

i used a t25 stage 3 360 thrust bearing , and a 90 degree bend  *bought a new SFS one *
and the metal pipe with a AM filter and mine sounded like that ill try post up a video soon ! , Give it a go , may / may not be as loud but will still sound lovely either way as D/V give me a headache lol
Title: Re: turbo chatter ????
Post by: hendyR5 on 20:11, Fri 29 January 2010
Well maybe b different on mine as av got a standard T2 lol
al take the airbox out over the wkend n give it a bash, cant b too hard
so going by this thread a would have to blank off hose to the dumpvalve? a havent got a blanking plug so is this all a have to do without taking it out completely?

pics or vid very much needed on my behalf     cheers

TIP - use a 3'' long peice of wooden broom handle and wedge it where the D/V goes ,

Then pull out the the vacum hose that fits into the front of the D/V , Use a bolt to wedge into the end of the silicone vacum pipe if your not 100% confident in removing the pipe work completely  , this will eliminate the D/V set up  [ just Remember to tuck it away some where its not going to either melt on something hot , or get stuck/ wedged in.

Then remove air box and fittings , attache the 90degree bend to the turbo cold side , then place the metal pipe into the bend then filter at the end! . yeah maybe a t2 will sound slightly different but still miles better !

basically your a mug if you WANT your turbo to chatter, its just about the worst thing to ever want for your turbo, yes it sounds good but if you actually imagine the forces that are involved to make a turbine wheel thats spinning at about 150krpms to stall instantly itl make you cringe....and then need a turbo rebuild

 I believe I've seen this topic argued on just about every forum Ive encounterd, My theory is, its the cars owners choice .

yea i know but it makes me kinda cringe knowing that some one actually wants to damage there car but i suppose its a renault 5 and parts are silly cheap to repair em!
Title: Re: turbo chatter ????
Post by: Ash-Lee on 11:18, Fri 05 February 2010
The damage is questionable. The R5 didn't leave the factory with any bypass valves at all and many owners have not suffered any premature failures because of this.

As i mentioned in my other post most if not all modern turbo cars do have bypass valves, but this seems mainly in the interest of keeping the engine running smoothly rather then actual physical damage.

Honestly, I do not have the greatest knowledge on turbos, but I know that the WRC rally cars' turbos do chatter. I've heard it. And it is also mentioned earlier in this thread... So why would they race with turbo chatter, if the chatter is potentially damaging? They would know what's best, I reckon??

PS. I too am currently thinking about removing my dumpvalve :D

Cheers...

Yeah me mate at more or less that start lol .

The Compressor surge  is amplified and echoed through a combination of after market Induction kits / Filters

lol it does sound cool though, and why do you think im switching teams?? these cars are niiice. i believe you can get em to chatter even with a bov as ive been in a starlet glanza that had a blitz DD bov in and that chatterd loverly. i think its all down to the pressure setting of the bov
