Title: So my R5 caught on fire...
Post by: Midnight_Turbo on 14:55, Sun 08 March 2009
Well I thought id be brave and jetwash the engine bay after work and all was good till I got home that was.
Only popped inside for 10 minutes to grab some stuff and when I came back out the car was still steaming which was odd, upcon closer inspection I could see flames and embers under the car, luckily Ive got a fire extingusisher in the house and managed to put the fire out without calling the fire brigade.

The cause? Previous shonky alternator/fan switch wiring.

Spend all yesterday rewiring it but cant get the fan to cut in so thats another thing for the list.

Nothing like owning an R5  :P

is it easy to sort the fan switch out? or is it a case of wiring the fan sensor up to the fan??

the last owner had a lucky escape!!!

all started by the intercooler cutting though the wires to the relays on the near side!!

Wow thats a proper rats nest of wiring, The wiring I did was pretty easy as I just copied the original wiring from a diagram on here and made sure the fan still went through a relay.

i dont think they are mate no,if you was to get 1 from acampos it would not have perc fan or fogs but then again the perc fans are the couse of most 5 turbo fires.if ud of posted this 2 weeks ago id have sent you what you needed for free but i scrapped the car a couple of week ago withh all the looms still in...funny how as soon as you get rid of something you find out you need it..haha.

Title:
Post by: davesgtt,s on 00:57, Tue 31 March 2009
yeah, does it have one pipe to the perc fan and the other goes to the big main boost hose????if so then yeah its for the perc fan.
if you look at most pics of 5 engine bays its been removed.

Post by: r5gttraider on 11:04, Tue 31 March 2009

Title:
Post by: davesgtt,s on 11:22, Tue 31 March 2009
oh i9 see it now mate, dint notice the small arrow...anyway the part in the square is an o,e part for the headlights.the part with the arrow to it is for the perc fan.if the perc fans not connected its prob best to leave everything as it is.

Post by: r5gttraider on 11:56, Tue 31 March 2009
so were along the line does that resistor fit? wasnt connected!

and the one with the small aroow it looks like the r5 fuel filter conneted to the water pipes.dosnt say fuel filter but has a plug on the bottom of it maybe a water temp?? not sure!
hard to explain lol

i broke my camrea so ill have to wait till my brothers over next to take pics on his phone
Title:
Post by: Ash-Lee on 17:33, Tue 31 March 2009
I know which part you mean.

It's not the fuel filter thats for sure, it's not a water temp sender either. The pipe coming from it should lead into the boost pipe between the carb top and intercooler.

It's some sort of solenoid for the anti-perc fan, i don't know much about why or what it does because i removed all that.
