So it's early days in my ownership, just had it nearly week now but so far i have loved every minute of it! Ever since before i could drive i was desperate for a 5 Turbo and i used to get a lift into my weekend job back then with someone who had a pearl white one.
When he came to sell it i had passed my test and was driving, i was adamant i wanted to buy it but back then my dad stood in the way and said it would be so much trouble and cost so much money. My fascination with them never died from that point on, so here we are 11 years later and i have one.
Friends over the years have owned a couple of 5 turbo's mostly modified examples, i have always been a big fan of the standard look to the 5 and swore that one day when i owned one it would be a credit to me and wouldn't deviate far from the standard spec.
Last Friday i became the owner of this 1989 G reg 5 turbo, it has 84,000 miles on the clock and as they go seems reasonably tidy all round. Previous owners have left their own little marks on it which i will slowly change and return back to standard.
How far i take this i am not really sure at the moment but i have room to keep it in my garage out of the way and work on it as my little project.
So the photos and updates will start here then.
These are following a 'rinse' off!

So plans so far are to remove the seats and replace with originals, the lights are going in place of originals. The three gauges that have been hashed into the dash are going to be replaced by the original air vent. Toying with fitting Clio 16v alloys but thats early days yet.
Got an Alpine h/u to go in the dash, the tacky silver stickers that are apparently an 'alloy look dash kit' have been removed and all trim cleaned. About 3 miles worth of stereo cable, some of which was still live i found out! has been stripped out.
The air filter is going to be relocated, probably going to send it into Renault for a service which will be interesting...............
And so it goes on, as and when things change i will take photos and update the thread.
Cheers

Ok so been out there again this afternoon cleaning stripping rebuilding etc. i have removed both the rear windows and cleaned all the rubber seals and scraped the green build up out from the creases.
The plastic trims which run around the edge of the roof have both been off and cleaned along with the gutter - proper green and gunked up with years of sludge.
Me passenger seat is out ready for the originals tomorrow eve! very excited about this.
Also fitted this MASSIVE filter -

So all in all a productive morning, still trying to return as much to standard as possible. Got a good clean inside and out lined up for Thurs afternoon so fingers crossed for some good weather.
Once its had a good clean and polish will upload some more pics. I know not that many people will be interested in this thread because you all know what a standard 5 looks like but i figured its good to show the changes and progress to date.

Looking nice now !! Dont put it in Renault for a service.. They aint got a clue about these cars unless they have an old timer who worked for them when the GTT was out.. Best of servicing it yourself or one of the well known GTT tuners..
-
Cheers Lee i am pleased with how its starting to look. Since i posted about the Renault service, several people have said the same as you so going to consider the other options.
Next job on the list is sorting the rust around the windscreen.......

Well today the weather has been ideal for a good clean and polish, its dry and cool with no direct sun!!!
So out came the cleaning gear and this is what i finished up with, this was a wash, rinse, dry, pre wax cleanser, sealant, final layer of wax!
Also couple of the pics show the plates i hope to assign soon.....

Ahhhh, you have the 'detailing' bug.
I went all mental on mine when it was Tungsten, even as far as wet and drying some of the heavily scratched panels and polishing them back again with good results. But the difference in shades across the car really let it down so i just had it all painted in the end.
-
Yeah i got into detailing when we recently owned a MK5 Golf GTi and spent literally hours on it every weekend, got a real satisfaction from it - people thought i was mental!!
The 5 didn't come up too bad to be fair, needs a good clay from the feel of the paintwork and was tempted to have it mopped once all over.
Ash - you have PM
