Title: My cars and my story
Post by: BriC on 21:26, Mon 02 February 2009
OK, so I joined this club absolutely yonks ago under the username Maximum_Power. I think I was 16 at the time.. I then discovered RTOC and didn't come on here at all really (until recently)

It's not all bad news though.. My love for 5's since I was 16 has done nothing other than grow! I'm now 19 and I've had 9 Renault 5's and 1 200sx.

Pictures speak a thousand words, so I'll share some with you..

Here is my first car: A campus GTT lookalike (let me know if it is now owned by anyone on here, I'd love to see how it's doing):

I bought this whilst I had my campus with the intention to restore it back to original condition (it wasn't a real cup car, just a lookalike), but gave up and sold it:

I then sold the campus after a year of motoring, when I had a years NCB, and bought this GTT:

I then sold that after about 4 months (stupid mistake), and bought the 200sx:

I then sold that after about 3 months, because it was boring compared to 5's and then I bought this:

I obviously (having had 9 in total) bought and sold a few in between, but they were my main cars.

Having learnt that 5's are the only way forward, I decided to settle for the red 5, and started sinking some money into it:

However the paint let it down, so I booked it in with a bodyshop (a guy off RTOC). When I'd saved enough money, the date was set, and my Dad and me set to ripping it to pieces. Didn't take too long, as we've had to disassemble / reassemble a few of my 5's in the past :P

So, on the back of a towing dolly it went all the way up to Carlisle...

So the bodyshop set to work.. I'll let the pictures do the talking.

So after a long wait, it was time to get it again! I got it this Saturday just gone:

So, onwards with the rebuild! I have LOTS of new bits stockpiled, so it should be nice when it's all back together. I will take lots of piccies of the rebuild, so stay tuned :)

Oh yeh, and here are some piccies of it's garage

lovin the paint job aswell what colour is it, (inspiring me to hurry up n get on with mine now)

what engine plans do you have  :?:

are you keeping it on the standard wheels :?:
Title:
Post by: BriC on 12:18, Tue 03 February 2009
It's a Peugeout / Citroen colour. It's called Bleu Lucia.. or Lucia Blue in english.

Engine? I have a T25, AFR Kit (so I can sort out my fuelling), side exit, Silicone hoses, and I will run around 18-20psi. I will just see how that goes. On my old one (the blue one with ronal turbo's) I had it set up for 18psi, and that was on a T2, and that shifted, so I'm sure I'll be content with just those modifications.. for a while

Nah, not keeping the standard wheels.. I've got my eye on some though! I also need suspension. I will probably be getting Koni Sports.

As said, I've got loads of bits, so I will take piccies as I go along refitting it all!

Some pictures from last weekend..

Started with the tailgate - fitted rubbers, locking mechanisms, wiring, etc

One rear window in

And the other side..

A dash I bought (because mine had some holes in it). Pretty fookin messy! You can't see it really, but it has quite a bit of over spray on it, however I managed to clean it up nicely.

Sound deadening in

Heater matrix in

Dash in and majority of the wiring connected

Couldn't get anything done this weekend, but will be cracking on next weekend with pics to be added

'fraid not. Didn't really get anything done last weekend due to crap weather, and my helper (my Dad) wasn't feeling too well. He's still not too well, but I think I'll just try and crack on on my own this weekend, even if it's simple bits :) so hopefully pics this weekend.

Not much progress this weekend either. Was gonna be putting the engine in today, but other things came up. Yesterday got the engine ready to go in (pretty much)..

Clutch fitted

And then other stuff I didn't take photos of - Putting all the loom back on, alternator on, etc.

Just need to drain the oil and change the filter and the engine should be back in next weekend.

OK - So.. Decided I want to be more thorough when rebuilding. I was just gonna throw it all in, as it was before, but I decided I'd get some stuff cleaned up / repainted.

Before:

Removed the subframe and all the other crap:

Then removed the struts / steering rack / hubs / driveshaft all in one from the subframe

Also found a nice surprise

Hole in the sill! Looks like my Dad will be using his MIG soon

My cars new home - the tent was trying to take off with the wind, and has damaged the paintwork on the gutter plastics. Not too big a deal.. I'll just get some sprayed up at some point

Did the doors today and yesterday

This was the worst hinge (note how off centre it is)

My dad doing all the hard work

Pushing a sleeve in (and some nice brand placement)

Sleeve in

All greased up!

Right door

Left door

It's tonnes better now - it all lines up, and there is absolutely NO play in the doors! Pretty happy with it all (I did this to all 4 hinges)

I also did some more stripping of the subframe ready for powder coating. The wishbone bushes were an absolute bitch!

It is mate.. it's my bro's VR6 Storm. Nice car - sounds gorgeous as well.

Thanks as well. Tbh, none of it really would be possible without my dad, but it's great because I've learnt so much. Same way he learnt - picking it up as he goes / learning from others. He knows how to do it all really, and he's never worked in a garage.. he's a bank manager

I got them powdercoated mate - I dropped them off, and then they shotblasted them and powdercoated them. The finish is awesome - literally like new. This place I took it all to is uber cheap as well - only 40 for the whole lot

So today, I made two new purchases..

One being a carb
The other.. another GTT

The GTT is to replace my daily driver campus:

So, here's some pics of the new one, after a quick wash:

Does anyone want a GT Tuning twin dump valve set up?

One with my uncles award winning freshly restored camper:

Started T-Cutting it on the bonnet. You can't really see it very well, but in this pic you can see closest to the camera where I have T-Cutted a bit, and past that where it is cloudy (almost looks dirty, but this was done post wash, so it was clean!). Comes up alright, and I will eventually get the whole car done.

Picked it up today from RTOC member 'B4NK51E' in Birmingham. We then took a de-tour to Redditch to pick up the carb I bought, so all in all, the GTT survived a 2.5 hour journey with no problems.

Plan is - it won't be on the road for another couple of months, and when it is on the road, it will be my daily driver to replace the campus. I will be keeping it standard ish, as it is, but repairing little bits and bobs, i.e. having the grille re-sprayed

Very nice 8) I'm liking those wheels.
Did you find you had to chop the top rad hose a bit to get it to fit? Mine fouled the dizzy badly and was about 2 inches too long on either end.

It's not too bad tbh.. I've not properly fitted it yet though, as I'm still waiting for a water pump gasket from Renault, so my waterpump is only mock fitted for now.

The boost hoses though.. they were well too small in diameter! Was a right pain in the arse to get them to fit especially on the carb lobster!

Pretty much.. well, won't be doing any internal work, but I've got a T25, and LC-1 kit to fit, so I will be increasing the boost, then adding shiny bits. Probably go for about 18psi, with good suspension / tyres / roll cage.. Should be good fun on trackdays :)

Bit of an update - been a while!

Thought I'd add some pictures of her in her current state.

Mouldy steering wheel  It had a leak, which is sorted now.

Some rust around the drivers side rear arch. Luckily it is where the plastic arch sits, so repair work will be covered. That will obviously be done soon! Just waiting on my dad to buy a new mig welder.

Wired up my gauges as well, but used a taillight connector block to make it neater / easily removable.

Did a few other bits and bobs as well, general sorting out electrics, fixing some leaky bleed nipples on the coolant hoses, fitted the exhaust, fitted the air filter, swapped back to standard headlights (need to mess about with my quads), etc.

Gonna buy some paint this Friday, and sort out that rusty arch / some rust on the sills, then I can put the rest of the bodykit on.

MOT time soon :D

The marks on the side skirts that you can see are just from the paper they were stored in. They had been left outside, and the paper had stuck and dried to the skirts - it'll wash off :)

Looks like a car again :D

It's sitting very high at the moment, but uprated suspension to come, when funds allow!

Ready for an MOT now! Not 100% finished, as can be seen, but just a few finishing touches and she's done.

Going to book it in for an MOT this Saturday. Insured on it already, so if it passes, I'll get some tax, and I'll be out in this GT Turbo for the first time in 2 years!

Cheers mate! Nah, can't bring it to the pod. I'm working till 1 on Friday, so by the time I got there, people would be leaving, and it would all be quite pointless :)

Other white bits - nothing really planned. I've got a black with white stitching suede gear lever gaitor to go on yet, but not a lot of white other than that...

You tell me mate - he was supposed to be sorting it but he didn't.

It's all sorted. Rusty metal cut out and new metal in place. Luckily it's in all the hidden places - ie, under the carpet, and under the sills, so a professional paint finish after the welding wasn't required!

Bit of an update.

Won some seats on eBay for 60. Took a bit of a risk, as I hadn't seen them, and the description was a bit brief, but they turned out to be pretty good! They are standard GT Turbo seats, but retrimmed in blue leather. Main problem was, they were in pembrokeshire, which is a 4.5 hour drive each way , so I went and got them in the BMW last weekend.

Basically changed them as I've gone off the buckets that were in it. Back when I started this project, the plan was to have it stripped and caged, but my ideas have changed, and I want it a more OE+ look.

Anyway - took a few pics. Not very good ones.. just took them on my iphone.

Had a go at lowering it today.

Drivers side torsion bar came out nice and easily, but the passenger side, not so much

Got it out eventually though, and lowered it ~40mm. Think I went too low though. It's catching the arch cover on the drivers side (it's lower on the drivers side), and the passenger side will probably catch with people in the rear.

So next weekends job is to take them out again, raise it probably ~10mm, and get it level as well. Not bothered about raising it, as it's probably a bit too low at the rear for my liking anyway.

Pictures (sorry they're crap - iphone quality and poor light):

Done a few small jobs on the 5 today:

    * Fitted un-painted gutter strips (old ones were a bit knackered - had a few cracks and scrubs on them)
    * Fitted standard steering wheel with paint removed, and polished boss
    * Fitted parcel shelf / associated plastics
    * Fitted Renault badge
    * Fitted new number plates (old ones were knackered)
    * Gave it a good clean

New alloys fitted... Think they break it up a bit more. It's a very modern colour, and the wheels were a bit too modern and in your face I think, so going to try and tone it down a bit.

Next jobs are:

Fit front grille badge
Fit spoiler
Fit rear badges

I'd also like a new drivers side door (current one doesn't fit very well.. a new door was used when the car was painted, but it doesn't seem to fit very well.. maybe a patent part?) but that would mean painting it, and there are a few other bits I'd like to get painted, so think I'll wait and save a bit of cash and get it all done together

Olie, car looks so much better with the turbines on it, as you say you just need a few things to finish her off, those I would say are, grill badge, fogs, rear spoiler, rear tailgate badge.

With ref to the door how do you mean doesn't fit properly, they look good in the pics :) :D
