Thanks for the comments everyone although i can't take any credit for the way it looks, that'll be down to the previous owners.
r5gtt08, i'd rather not say, it was quite a lot but with only 14k on the clock i thought it was a fair amount. The original plan had been to get a fairly good one and then rebuild it but after talking to Mark fish about the costs involved(a lot of the work i would have had to have done for me) i thought it would be better to go for this and put my money into keeping it looking as good as it does.
It's totally standard/original and it's going to stay that way, there are a couple of things that need doing, a few chips the battery tray is reverting to it's original state and the ream beam/suspension needs the full rust treatment.
The only thing that i was thinking was a change of wheels, i want to keep the originals with the tyres but i want some stickier rubber, responsible hooning does not appeal on 20 year old rubber :)
Any suggestions anyone?

Your stuck with Uniroyal Rallyes in the original size, not to bad in the dry but i don't rate them in the wet.

You have more choice with 185/60's.

Don't think it's going to be seeing much rain :)

It will be a garage queen over the winter, i have a Clio Trophy and a daily but i do want to be able to use it to it's full potential as well when i can.

hey!  I have been waiting for these pics ;)  how did I miss this thread!

This is without doubt...  (in my opinion) THE BEST OE 5 GT TURBO in the galaxy..and only 14k miles.  I am really pleased its in your safe hands...and ur keeping it original and just tidying up any small marks.

This reminds me of my friends brothers 5 and was the 1st one I ever saw (in white also)...  it was love at 1st sight

I think the price u paid is extremely good value as you would have to spend far more 'doing up' a less tidy example and it still wouldnt be like this one...u must be well happy with it!  8)  A genuine step back in time.

keep us posted with it... never sell it!  8)

(next time its out and about can u take some side on pics   )

I found a tyre place a while ago that still had the Dunlops in stock in the original size...  I have been trying to find there link for you...  but cant find it now..  if I do I'll let u know... but think its gone AWOL.

The new set of Uniroyals will prob be ok for you as ur not going to go rallying in the wet and u wont spin in circles at 30mph.. :)

haha... I'm always the 1st one there!      as Ash said tho...  I had them on my standard wheels and they were fine in the dry... but really easy to spin in the wet if you pull away a bit sharpish. Imo, you really do want to keep the original tyre size on this baby.. shame there arent any other options...a new set would still be good.

Your not going to paint the front end are you ?? With 14k on the clock I'd be keeping the original paint !!

Looks like its got the optional larger tail pipe standard exhaust as well rather than the pee shooter one !!

Not if i can help it, in fact no :) It still has that "lovely" orange peel effect over most of the paintwork and the detailing purists might not like it but i want it to stay. Basically there are some chips that have been done, not very well, that could be cleaned up and some new ones to do. when i do these i spot in the paint and then use tiny bits of wet and dry on the end of a pencil then spot polish so only small areas are ever affected.

Sounds good, I dont know if thats what chips-away do, but the work they did to remove my chips is spot on..  you would never know it had been touched in..and a perfect match.. I am pretty fussy and couldnt see any miss matches at all in any lighting conditions.. just a perfect finish and colour match.

Thats different to the experience I had with them, I used them to paint a scuff someone did to my golf and they did it once and it had too much purple in the paint so I said I wasn't happy, they did it again while I was there and they mixed the paint up so unaccurately that it was never gonna be a good match..

I let them do it as I got them to do it cheaper than normal (Person who scuffed it was paying) and cos Im fussy think he was a bit pissed off that I'd moaned, then at the weekend went to VW got the correct colour, wiped off the shit job the'd done and all the overspray behind the bumper where they hadnt masked properly and painted it myself !!

Thats not good mate,  the thing is Chips-Away is run by 100's of small franchises thoughout the country.  I was lucky I had a good place work on mine..specailly after hearing your experience

Its like saying postmen are useless...  we dont all get the same one... but they are all still called postmen...doesnt mean there all tossers...lol.

I would still use them for small chips..  if I needed them... but I wouldnt use your guy! he sounds a right monkey..  :?

You are lucky, he must have been very good to match up your colour with no problems, with mine being white it should be a lot easier, much more difficult to get any extra luster out of the paintwork but much more forgiving on almost invisible blemishes.
So the wheels thing, is it that it's difficult to get the metal to fit without lots of messing around? It would be nice to be able to just swop the shoes when i wanted, like i said i do want to keep the original speedlined with the original rubber. Have to do more digging on this i think.

I'm not sure what u mean about getting the metal to fit?

Yep.  sounds like I did well to get a good match on my chip repair..  would be good to see pics on how u get on with yours when u get around to it  8)
Title:
Post by: hoolio on 19:01, Sat 20 December 2008
^^ yeah, that is confusing.

Basically what are my options re different wheels, same size and ET or at least close enough so that they don't cause any problems that i can fit some new rubber on, from what i gather i'm quite limited.

I will, hopefully in the new year.

Chips Away and all other 'smart repair' companies are a joke! I should know i used to work for a smart repair company.

I could tell you every dirty trick in the book! You want a proper job, take it to a Body shop. You pay for what you get.

I studied paint/refinishing at college for 4 years and now have a proper job as a paint technician, doing things how they should be done!

Mintest 5 i have seen dude, dont sell it! ( unless its to me  :D  )

Tried removing the battery tray this weekend to give it the rust treatment and a new coat of paint, what a mare, the two bolts in the passenger bulkhead have been put in with the nuts actually in the passenger foot well, off with the fuse box to try to find them without much joy, it seems the only way to get to them would be to actually cut out a section of soundproofing as it goes right under the dash, i did think i might be able to pull it down but it wasn't budging.
It turns out it's not actually that bad, this is it after a rub down with some wire wool, i think if i remove the four bolts i can get to i should be able to mask it off to do it in situ unless anyone has any ideas.
BTW that is not a hole in the top right it just looks like it.

Just slightly paranoid as i used to have a GTX and in the end the battery was just sitting in the frame it had rusted so bad.

Title:
Post by: GTTboost on 18:00, Wed 28 January 2009
The tray doesnt look bad enough to take out to me...   once you've rubbed down all the surface rust...  use a rust treatment that will turn any rusty area back to solid metal and then mask up all around it as well as u can and paint it whilst its still left on the car.  I dont think the underside will be corroded as its just where the water has collected in the tray over the years...and I'm pretty sure there will be a drain hole under the tray to prevent and water sitting under the tray.  Goin by the rest of you car...  its seen most of its life in a garage..... but this is what I would do to save all that work..
Title:
Post by: hoolio on 18:12, Wed 28 January 2009
G, you're quite right of course, its just me being some kind of anal perfectionist :) If i had bothered to wire wool it first i probably wouldn't have attempted to get it out. The drain hole underneath is working and from what i can feel by sticking my fingers under the tray it's smooth painted metal. It just would have been easier to do out, especially as the paint has peeled and rust traveled over the edge of the tray but as long as it lifts a little it'll sort fine.
Title:

I got a friend to knock up these for me on photoshop to give me an idea of what the wheels might look like with different colours.
Hope i don't get too panned for this, but i want to stress this will be for my spare set of wheels, i will be keeping the rims with the Michelin MXV's on.

The graphite with polished lip looks good!  8)  Looks a bit too fussy with the red lip though.

I'm not sure the red with polished lip would look that good in the flesh to be honest, but it's not my car and i reckon whatever combination you go for your going to do it with 110% perfection.  8)

Hey J,  I think the safest option is the graphite with silver lip.. I dont think the right anthracite was captured well enough to see it how it would really look..  but i think its the safest option from the list.. and as your keeping your originals safely tucked away...  u can just play :)

Thanks for all the kind comments again, well i kinda knew all along, i think i'll be going for the anthracite with the polished lip. As mentioned i think the colour above is not quite right, i'd like a slightly darker shade than the colour GTT sprayed his. Just need to source a decent set of rims now, am waiting on some but i'm on the point of giving up.

Hey J.. cant believe your still waiting... if your anything like me and super impatient u'll be running around in circles by now  :?   hope they turn up soon....I'm really looking forward to seeing how ur 5 looks with them all done!!   8)  I have to say tho...  with my boring head on...  I love urs with the silver standard wheels...   to me...  its perfection... mainly because the whole car is so spotless it just makes it factory fresh.

But...  I also know where your coming from with the anthracite...  it will be cool to see how it looks with a 'twist' to the standard alloys on there.

You've got some very sexy tyres waiting to go on as well  8)

How comes its taking so long to get ur wheels?

Yeah there has been much nashing of teeth, don't understand the problem, he wants to sell I want to buy. Just about given up on them which is irritating as I would have gone in stronger on those 3 and have also turned down another set. Ho hum. I do like the silver as well which is why the second set is the perfect option, best of both worldf.

Well I noticed J150 has her pic up on the "your cars" section so I thought it was time for a quick update.
Well finally got around to taking her for an MOT yesterday which she sailed through of course, so hopefully soon I shall be able to post some slightly more interesting pictures. This was the first time i've been out for a proper drive, seriously good fun :)  Very similar to my Trophy but smaller rawer lighter and maybe slightly quicker on the pickup. Brakes are pretty awful though, my van brakes are suprisingly good and so are those on the T which I've upgraded, not sure if it's down to not being used for a long period or they are just not great.
We will hopefully be at Silverstone this sunday :)

I can't believe its been this long since I updated this thread, not really too much to add other than she still looks as fantastic as ever and though I've done a few little bits I took somebodies advice of if it ain't broke don't fix it and have left it as is.
