Danielson, standard wheels are 13" Speedlines, tyres 195/55/13 if you want to go retro.

16" shouldn't slow it down they just make the handling crap on the 5. Best wheels on the 5 to get are 15" with 195/45/15 profile tyres which will make preetty much the same size as the standard speedlines with massive tyre wall
-
13" Are They Coorrr Learn Sumfin new EveryDay :D
Cheers Buddy
-
i run 15" much better and handle great
-
i run 15" much better and handle great
same as u ^ you get far less traction and dont handle as well with the 13's.. but if you like spinning the wheels a lot.. there the ones

ive grown out of spinning wheels as tyres cost to much lol

Standard wheels + T25 = Less wheelspin off the line. 8)

I must have a dodgy T25 then.. but on the other hand... the tyres I had on there were pants.
-
I think 'less' was the key word.
I don't really suffer much from wheelspin though, but saying that i rarely shoot off the line at full bore.

what size is those venoms 17's?
what does it handle like?
-
do you think it needs to come down do you ..?
theres 16s and it handles ok
the handlings all in the driver i say
-
i would personally bring it down at least 40mm and i bet you see alot of difference in the handling and yeah your rite it is down to the driver but thats just to keep control of it lol
mines like a go-kart you can fling it round every corner and it just sticks like glue probearly the best car i have had (handling wise)
i would put 15's on aswell as i think on most cars (hot hatches) its the perfect size wheel. but thats me bud
-
yea i want a set of 15s to go on it but im really thinking black multi spokes and cash is a bit short at the moment
now youv mentioned it i may have to drop it a bit

hahah just a few wise words bud
yeah i know what ya mean about being strapped for cash lol (the credit crunch an all that lol) but i'm sure you may find a cheap set somewhere just search high and low but remember not to go over what you have to pay for a set always stick to your budget lol
heres a pic with mine on 15's lol and lowered about 90mm (maybe abit more  )

The rear beam will come off but the biggest job I found is releasing the brake line unions. I had to cut mine before I could unscrew them. I'm replacing them anyway as they're all rusted up - just unclipping them made for quite a lot of brake fluid on my garage floor where they'd rusted through in places!
Then it's a matter of releasing the handbrake cables and then the 4 bolts that mount the axle. I originally thought the heads were fixed inside the chassis rails but upon closer inspection they're under the rear seat base. They've got sticky foam stuff on 'em which rips off and are held with a bracket to stop them spinning.
Anyway, unless is rusted up to f%8k like mine, it shouldn't need to come off for lowering. I made a slide hammer up at work years back and that worked fine.
I've taken mine off because the chassis rails are rusted through in places where it mounts.
Does anyone know how to fit new unions on new brake/fuel lines - this is a job I have to do at some point. At the moment it looks as though I'd have to put 'em on, screw 'em in place then bend the pipes into shape after they were on but I'm sure they should be screwed in last! Anyone got any ideas?! :? :? :?
-
you need a brake pipe flareing [?] tool
-
Or you could go somewhere that makes brake lines up, they will cut the pipe to the correct size and flair the ends for you. You will probably need to bend them yourself though, make sure you wrap the pipe around something so when you bend it you don't squash it flat.
-
I suppose my pipes turning with the unions because they're they're 20yrs old and all rusted up? That's explain it - D'oh!
I forget about flaring - thanks for the advice
-
Didnt realise how busy u've been with your 5 since I last looked in.. hows it all going? havent read thru the whole thread.

i hope a grill will fit i want an oe one i have a aftermarket jobby but not my cupa tea i did find my leak it was the sencor but it wasnt leaking from where it screws in it was leaking through the plastic that the terminal is fixed into to oil was coming through the centre

i had the same leak with an oil pressure sender years ago, used a bolt as a temp bodge.
-
i had the same leak with an oil pressure sender years ago, used a bolt as a temp bodge.
Same here, on a 205 GTI. It would squirt oil straight through the middle of the sender!
-
i bodged the sender for the time being i put some aradite around the top by the terminal to stop the leak seems to have done the job but have a problem with the oil light that i posted in the problem section nobody seems to know about
also had a random water leak from the bottom of the water pump the bigish pipe that comes from pump to rad although the jubily is tight the water seems to still be creeping past it

-
nice to see that long awaiting hunt for a OE spoiler has paid off . looking nice i must say cant wait to get my grey 5 resprayed and road legal. got a few more things to sort out on it then its all done. its all about the money savings now.
-
It was one of the first things on the list to do when I first got the car (2years ago) i'm in the middle of doin my wheels going to see what a mirrored set of speedys look like on tungy
I've been following your thread your bumpers are looking good I've got a smooth front bumper but I now want strips
how much you paying for a respray
-
full outside respray which is staying the same colour is £300+ paint (£100ish) i got to get some welding done before hand tho and i said to the guy what i do is take the bodykit off myself and other parts that need spraying so he doesnt miss any parts etc. he is well known around my area in the business i do and people recommend him, but if not then some1 else has said £600 who is also recommend'd
-
Is that prep work aswell or are you doing your own £400 is a good price is that mates rates or just standard rate for a blow over
-
no prep work from me, i jus said i will take off the parts myself so i know it will get done properly. full blow over from a local guy. theres always the old local guys that been doing it for like 20+ yrs that dont over charge for a respray like most known company. all known companies i been to want £1500-2000 if there is min body damage or if its straight prep n respray
-
This Is what I did trying to source the problem of why my clutch wasn't disengaging
(http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww178/Daniel_R5GTT/1b97caa1.jpg)
-
Is that a big crack going through the housing
Did you get all the wheels polished up in the end?
-
The picture didn't really show the extent of the crack but it runs from the top round to the flywheel cover
It's sat on the drive looking a little worse for wear on a flat tyre
I managed to polish 2 of the 4 to the stage I wanted but they weathered really bad
To high maintainence
