i want to get rid of the 5 and get a series 1 escort turbo what do you all think of them. what car would you lot have if you didnt own a 5.

the series one's are the best of them all i think but watch out for the one's that have been rung a few times or the one's that have been repaired as if done correctly then you'd never know untill you went for a mot . if you go for one then have a really good look over it more then what you would with a r5

thanks for the advice smithsgtt i have never realy looked to buy one yet but i will be sure to have a good look round 1. there is 1 on piston heads for 9,000 but thats well out of my price range. there are alot of series 2s for sale and converabels but i want to keep old school lol

Yeah i like the S1 but deffo watch out for XR3i shells with S! engines, or ringers, my bro bought one a few years ago, he jumped in it & it was rapid so didn't check any other bits on it, when he sold it the guy came back to him for some money back as it wasn't a propper S1 !!

Hate the way they handle & drive though, much prefere my GTT.
I've had a few different cars ,260bhp rover tomcat on cams & management, chipped Scooby, uno turbo & 3 GTT's & still prefere my GTT, also driven cossies, evo 5 & 6, Sti's, 200sx, just something about GTT's.

do think i should stick to the 5 then and just spend money on that. is it possible to get 220bhp out of the 1.4turbos and run them safe.

stick with the 5 as they give you a big grin on your face everytime you drive them, my father in law has a db9 and he loves going for a spin in my 5 turbo as it is a different drive all together compared to his 100 grand + beast but he still wont swap with me  :lol:

The only S1 RST's worth having are the ones that have been cherished and they always sell for silly moeny. Almost all of them have had some bodywork done as Ford seem to suffer from tinworm.

i'd definaylt have the sereis one out of the escort rs range but like ash said they rot away so most have been patched up, but quite a few 5's have too.
if you want a big power one look out for a ze-vh or full zetec turbo conversion. and look to pay 5-6 g's and up. but personly i'd go for a fiesta rs turbo. i prefer the looks of little cars.

Up to you mate, if you get to know the car well enough it won't give many probs, if it's a daily driver i'd say 180bhp will be better, as soon as you get over 200 you need to really know the cars & have alot of aftermarket gauges to keep an eye on things. I have a wideband, oil pressure gauge, boost gauge, EGT gauge & when i'm on full boost (1.6 bar) i'm constantly flicking my eye from one to the other & back to the road, lol.
I have done alot of work to mine to get it to where it is now from when i bought it, i'm prob around 220bhp now.
I use mine now & again in the week but i do have another car, it's more a toy/hobby really for me.

wow bet your 5 is a animal. somelads i no keep telling me that u wont get
200+bhp out the 1.4 engine but i told them you could. i want to gt the 5 rapid to prove a point but dontwant to throw loads of cash at it as i would lke a series 1 escort. im thinkin about keeping my 5 i love the in small doses lol but its bone 107,000 miles and its 20 years old so i need to spend money before i sell it to get it right. how much money would  have to spend to ge it 180bhp i would like a front mount intercooler but keep it original as possible.

Jet the carb for 18-20 psi, T25 turbo with a .47 rear end if you want it to boost fast, .49 if you don't mind not being on full boost till 4k like mine (still very fast & makes good power) a 285 cam & vernier if you want to rev past 6k, decent intercooler, volvo clutch to take the power.
Standard pistons will be fine but if the engine is old it may start to blow past the rings after a little while as the rings & liners will be worn.
If you have your heart set on the S1 then get it as the 5 will take a bit of money to get rapid & reliable really (think engine rebuild to be safe)

A decent cooler, bigger turbo & carb set up could be had for 500-600 if you looked around (cooler off ebay, turbo, i can get for 410 new & the carb you could do yourself) that with 18 psi should see around 160-170 easily, but then you will prob need a clutch soon with that extra power.

I've just stuck new liners & forged pistons into mine so replaced a few bits at the same time, pod on friday saw a 12.78 1/4 mile @ 108 mph & 6 other 12 sec runs.
Last time i went on the rollers my car made 192bhp with a missfire at 5500rpms with 1.4bar boost, the time before it made 207 bhp @ 1.5 bar @ 6500rpms, i have a higher comp ratio now & run 1.6 bar so i estimate 220bhp . I hope to run it again at the end of the month so we shall see.

The engine consists of-brand new standard pistons and liners,lightened and balanced crank and flywheel,crank has been machined to 0.25mm,big end and little end,brand new oil pump,BB Tuning gaskets kit,uprated head gasket and bolts,stage 3 ported and gas flowed head,270 degree cam from BB Tuning,plus uprated valve springs and seals,250 bhp BB clutch,all new bearings and shells,brand new water pump,turbo technics turbo,pace double capacity intercooler,currently running 14 psi, full stainless steel exhaust,scorpian 4 inch back box and the rest magnex,gt tuning 4 point stainless steel strutt brace,full samco hoses,bailey dump valve,carb rejetted.

i might go for a forge FMIC intercooler and a t25 but not that sure yet as hardly use car and its running sweet at the minute with no problems

nice. i would love to do this to my car just to smoke my mates integra type R. what is the volvo 1.7turbo like in a 5 are they any good and are they reliable.

the volvo engine in the 5 is fast ......

BUT......
 

its the hassle of putting it  all together if your doing it by yourself and dont know what your doing.

it helps if you've got a step by step guide they are reliable as they are efi .

it would be mymate that does it but that means welding plates to the bulk head to strenten it doesnt it.

There are 2 limitations on the volvo conversion, the stock ecu's (yes there are 2) & the camshaft, ok if you want standard power from the engine or a touch above but to get decent power you will need to get a cam made & run an aftermarket ecu, the standard engine can be tuned alot more easily ;)

what was the name of the volvo they came out of was it a 440.
are they rare to find gona look on ebay for 1 just to get a brief idea

440/460 or 480 turbo can't remember if they differ at all in any way (sometimes different models have different engine mounts etc. ), i think they are all the same.
