Hi chaps just got myself a r5 about a week ago, I usually into my rs turbos but im fed up of it being broken all the time and cant be arsed to take the engine in and out anymore times lol. Im really enjoy this motor great fun, having a bit of problem with the fuel pump but got a new cuming tomorrow so should be all good. I shall get a few more pics of the bay soon looks like its had a fair amount of money spent on it but un aware of the specs as the last owner doesnt know, anyway the pics :D

-

-
hello there nice r5gtt what can i say you gotta love em they are fragile in there own way its like having a motorcross bike loads of servicing and checks to do but its all good fun :) ive had mine just over 3years my 1st car legaly on the road,id never sell it, was standard when i got it but ive done loads to it now, best mod is the side exit exhaust it roars!!! ive had centre exit carisma 12"by4"inch,scorpion systems etc ive got good i.c.e never have it on windows are down listening to her roaring!! :D hope all goes well for you enjoy!!! 8)
-
cheers pal :D I got the new pump and now its working again, I did a service at the same time as it was well due for it. running sweet as 8)

I wouldn't go to say they are fragile as long as fully serviced regular and fueling is correct for the boost being run. All should be good. Don't forget most of these cars are around 20 years old so things will have worn out and need replacing but that is to be expected. Re-builds are good as previous owners rag the shit out of them without any care hence the reason r5's have got the old the headgaskets go (bleed valves and standard carb not fueled correctly).

fitted my bucket seat.
Ive been busy getting bits ready for my handling and brakes overhaul, I am ordering some spax rsx coilovers on Monday so hopefully have all the parts needed by the weekend.

OOooo, you're going to be having some fun, i see wishbones, discs & pads, new poly doughnut & new bearings for the suspension (i have this set up) new coilovers (i also have those) the pain in the arse is the wishbones, you'll prob have to cut the old ones off mate, they rearely come out, you may get the rear ones out but the front ones usually rust & won't come out of the old bearings, hence Mr anglegrinder with cutting discs coming out to play :)
Best measure the new wishbones up with the old ones as some places have the wrong ones for the GTT, pass side i think & they are wider tracked by an inch..... Not good to find that out after you have fitted them
That seat looks alot more comfy than mine as well :(
You will find the coilovers may look high on the pass side due to the weight so it may have to come slightly lower that side, thats how i set mine up anyway.
-
yeah its going to be fun fitting all new bits and even funner trying them out! yeah I had to send back the nearside wishbone as it was about a inch longer (so be aware people when buying a LH wishbone from GSF).
The seat is quite comfy but would nt like to be in it for hours lol, Its set quite low down starting to fill like a right go kart 8)
Parts Im fitting:
Big brake conversion kit-greenstuff pads
Rear brake kit-greenstuff pads
Wishbones
track rod ends
strut bearings
poly doughnuts + anti roll bars bushes
spax coilovers
renault nuts and bolts
etc..
gtt boy Im not sure what your on about regarding cutting things, are you saying I may have to cut the bolts off holding the wishbone on :?
-
Yes, you may have to cut through the nuts near the wishbone as they will usually turn but not come out ( they rust into the old bushes) :( some are ok, some aren't, just remember when you refit the new ones to add some copper slip!!
I had to do this on a mates car when i poly bushed his wishbones, well we ended up with new wishbones in the end as well ;)
-
oo I see, good to know these things before I start nice one
-
Yes, a real PITA usually i'm afraid to say, alot of swearing as well, also i hope your top mount bolts aren't rusted as well :(
-
stop putting me off  whats PITA mean?
-
stop putting me off  whats PITA mean?
I'm just pre warning you of some of the things you could run into :)
Pain in the Arse = PITA
-
Had a bit of a surpise today, I noticed my bumper hanging a bit so I just thought it would be just a loose bolt or something but I found this. The rest of the car is solid as far as im aware, all well I got it sorted dont think I would have been albe to sleep to nite if I didnt fix it straight away
How do the arches come off, Im going to go over the hole car once Ive done all the suspension and that.
-
i had that same problem, i was so upset when i seen it on mine, but not too suprised to be honest, haha. the arches are held on with 10mm nuts that screw onto a thread that goes into the arch. mine were covered in crap.
i'd have a peep at your sills too if i was you
-
nice car man! ooo am likin the look of those brakes! haha.. sorry bout the rust mate.. still a nice car for sure!
an in the best colour haha

-

heres a picture of my friends s1 escort turbo.. was said to be pushin 200bhp or around that mark, was useless.. he couldnt let the turbo kick in round a corner otherwise that would have been it.. haha it was ruthless...

Same here :) liking your 5 project ... some really tastey bits u've got going on there 8) sorry about the rusty spot... that must have been a shock to find hiding under there! Like someone said..if thats rusted, it might be well worth checking your sills too!
I'm also a ford fan... I had a Fiesta RS Turbo... it was my biggest project car so far... crazy to sell it really
Both your cars look good toys mate.. keep us posted as you get things sorted...
-
I received my coilovers on friday so made a start today, got a fair bit done need a few more bits the top hats were totally buggered and also one of the bleed nipples broke in the cailper  . Does anyone know of any good tips for getting them out??

Nice bit of shopping on the table but you forgot the oven chips! your 5 is goin to stick to the road well with those nice new bits. What make are the coilovers? Let me know how you like them please mate 8)

The coilovers are spax rsx. will let you know how Im getting on with them  cheers
-
where did you get those brakes from ? they look really nice
-
where did you get those brakes from ? they look really nice
I got them from ebay, work out a fair bit cheaper than buying from k tec etc.
Im gonna have to get a new rear cailper now as Ive totally fooked it now I managed to tap in a star bit into the nipple and the star bit just broke :x I need to get my car finished I hate it when a job takes longer than expected and when things are broken etc all well should all be worth it
-
some tastey goodies there. i'd love some coilovers or decent dampers, the 5 feels a bit spongey when i get in it after the KA.
one of my rear bleed nipplis broke on me but i mannaged to bleed it perfectly where the hose goes into the caliper. or you could buy a screw extractor set for your drill, you can get them from most places that sell tools, screwfix, b&q etc :)
-
was busy painting some bits up on sunday, I shall be hopefully be getting her finished tomorrow once my bits from cgb turn up. had a bit of a shock today as I was checking over my tyres I found two nails in one tyre and one in a other they are nearly new toyos aswel im well pissed off yet more expenses
I will put some more pics up tomorrow :D

Cage looks good, did you get the carb working ok ??
-
yeah seems to be, I found the breather hose to the rocker cover had a big hole in it and Ive also added a extra one way valve so that should be ok. what do you think of the readings do they still seem irrectic?
-
I dunno mate, what are they .lol...
-
can you not see the video
-
can you not see the video
Didn't realise it was a vid ,lol yeah looks fine to me.
What does it do @ WOT ??
-
about 11.8 as boost comes on and about 12ish at wot :D
-
about 11.8 as boost comes on and about 12ish at wot :D
12ish ? no higher than 12.4 i hope !!
-
dont think so.
-
I got 12.2 in 3rd gear and 12.6 in 4th :? both at 5000rpm
Im looking forward to getting this block with the forged pistons, I ve just been thinking of what im going to fit with this engine I shall put a bit of a list I hoping of getting around the 190bhp mark.
T25 with .49 rear 225 bhp 60 trim comp wheel (20psi)
285 piper cam
piper valve springs
baffled sump
Top Specification Head cgb (Is this nessasary?)
Valeo clutch (will this be good enough?)
-
I wouldn't say a modififed head was necessary Steve ran a standard head with the inlet ports opened slightly and the car produced 207bhp with the low comps, unknown what it would do with the forged jobbies and the slightly more boost he was running.
Valeo clutch is a necessary mate and is well upto the job,
Speak to Steve ref the turbo but what you have put down is again very similair to what Steve was running if not the same.
-
Right time for a update me thinks Ive taken out my old engine as it was starting to get a bit old and a pain to drive it had done 130.000  so its been a goodun, Ive got big plans for this new build and hoping for some good power figures Its going to include forged pistons, piper cams, bigger turbo etc etc anyways some picies of what Ive been upto.
Me and my old man manged to get the engine out by hand wasnt easy though as I left the crank pully on  Gave the bay a clean with the jet wash.
This is the new engine thats going in Its steves old one with forged pistons in and new liners in, Im going to be changing the bearings etc and checking the crank before she goes in. Also gave it a fresh lick of paint.
Pipercam 285 kit with pully etc.
Fancy leads.
Ive cleaned the head and manifold and also painted a few bits, I think Im goin get the head skimed and I will also be lapping the valves.
My mate made me up some nice alu hose bungs.

cheers pal, Its been good doing the 5 up usually when im doing things to a car I buy everthing and do it as quickly as I can due to having no other car, but now I have other motors I can just leave the five in the workshop and take my time with it, I dont think It will look as clean and tidy as your five the amount of times ive stared at the pictures of your tub
-
That sounds cool having your own workshop 8) I'd move in with it!!

What have you done to the exhaust manifold?
I'm fed up with having a clean engine apart from the big brown rusty looking manifold.
I cleaned it up with a wire brush attachment for a drill then sprayed with high temp paint in black which I got from halfords.
-
nice job dude!
I want to give my engine a good humping this year.
What paint did you use on the block?? How does the car run when its cold, with havin a k&n type filter???

Cheers mate, giving the engine a good humping a...ok then  . I just used some brake cailper paint I had lying about. it runs ok when cold but with having forged pistons its a little noisy when cold, not sure if the k@n affects it when cold.
I had a bit of a problem this afternoon I went on the first proper drive of the car since the works done all was brilliant pulls like a train now, I went and got some petrol and after I got back from paying I got in the car and I had no throttle  so checked under the bonnet and found the bloody cable had melted on the exhaust and couldnt get it to work it kept on sticking I ended up driving home using the choke lol

Wait couple of weeks... I will post picture from my R11 exhaust manifold...more power and better looking than original... :) ... it is possible to get few exhausts from Finland then :)

Its about time I did a little update Ive been busy doing some welding to cills and a couple of other bits and I also resprayed my arches and skirts there all nice and smooth now unfortunately I didnt take photos. But I have done some photos of what Ive done this week end I decided I needed to move my air filter to a better place and add a little scoop to the bonnet.

-
Love what you've done with the filter.. Car's looking good too :)
-
Would look even better with the header tank in the scuttle or anti perc fan location.
-
Thanks bric, yeah thats what Im planning to do james I want to put it next to the washer bottle in the scuttle area just really want to see how other people have done it before I start cutting hoses etc.
-
I had mine in the anti perc location never had any coolant problems but when bleeding had to always blow the system as the run was alot shorter
