Title: Thought I'd post a few pics of my 5GTT looking original...
Post by: GTTboost on 14:46, Sun 09 March 2008
For anyone that likes the original looks...  8)   I dug out an old file of pics of my 5GTT i havent seen for a while... thought u guys might like to see a few..

Had quite a few 5gtt's... (red, tungsten, pearl white, black and now tungsten again) I've had most of the other sporty hot hatches as well.

I missed owning a 5GTT soon as I sold my last one and had to find another one.  Took a while to find one I liked.... so many are overly modified and just not many healthy ones around.

Anyways...  3 years ago... I found one that was 90% all orginal that I liked... it wasnt abused and generally well cared for... and just needed some loving care... with door dents...  scratches on most of the panels.. dirty carpet.. and the engine wasnt impressive to look at but in good condition...just pretty black and dirty with almost all the orginal hoses that were in need of renewing before they let go.

Here's a few pics after the 1st makeover...  had all the scratches and dents removed.. and a high gloss polish up! I had it like this (looking 100% original) for a full year...  but then its almost impossible not to start playing with these cars!   and thats when my bank manager started to worry!

Heres how it was after the first clean up.. before it started getting a bit more expensive..  (the huge scorpion 4" tail pipe in these pics is no longer on the car that was on it when I bought it)

Haha...  I used some stuff called...Foam magic or something...  couldnt believe how it looked afterwards...  even had a 'nap' in it where you could really feel the depth of the carpet.  I might put everything back eventually... been having a play around with the way it looks but kept everything stored for safe keeping.

Thanks Steve..  tried to make it as good as new really..  even down to a stone chip..  the underneath is also like a show car... all polished up... bit mad.. but just ended up doing more and more till nothing was left to do.

I use Autoglym Interior Shampoo, it used to work wonders on the red carpet in my 205 GTI, i haven't had time to try it out on the R5 yet though, seem to spend every bloody weekend under the bonnet.

Haha..  not just yet...     thanks cathal and GTTboy!  8)

a closer front end pic... just after the chip removal..  and new grill ...all new lighting.. and even new badge..and bump strips.. (alloys were prof reconditioned also)

Here are some pics of how it currently looks underneath.. suspension / brakes......  and tidy underside..  I didnt want oversize disks as I like being able to still fit the smaller 13" alloys..  (also have a set of 15's that I swap around now and again)

Very very very nice wish my tungy was that clean.

What car washing liquid do you use? An what polish do you use?

Looks like your strut to hub bolts are facing the wrong way.

Yes,  thats prob the same place...  they were off ebay..  I think they are still selling them on there.  I was going for bigger disks and 4 pots but really want to still be able to fit the 13's from time to time..  would be a shame to not keep those :)  so these worked fine.... and it still stops! lol.

Cheers Baz...   u gotta be crazy to own one of these cars..     but with the pads..  I wont be using it on the track... and just went for the black EBC kevlar pads and stops very well.  I may change around the brakes later tho... I have heard ferodo brake pads ds2500 are the best option for track.

I have Ferodo DS2500's & they are excellent pads, bloody expensive though.
I found the standard EBC's better than the Green stuff....

Nice one  8)  do they work well from cold?  I was on the brink of getting some when I did the brakes..  quite a few of the track day guys use these and swear by them.  I am really tempted to go for some Wilwoods that fit under the standard wheels...but too many other things being done at the mo.

Thanks Baz mate.   There really is no dents, scratches or rust...anywhere on this car...  I have gone over it with a fine tooth comb and wouldnt rest if there was...  i sometimes wish I wasnt so fussy as i can have everything looking spot on and still want to improve it somehow... which explains why the underside ..under arches and inside and everywhere looks so tidy...I just keep going until there nothing left to make it look spot on....even the bits nobody will ever see are like new.

I took it to the supermarket today for a drive out...  a nice lot of boot space for the Beers! lol... and was stopped by someone that wanted to look over it... they couldnt believe it!  Really makes it worthwhile when someone like that enjoys seeing the car.

Nearly done 200 miles now since the engine rebuild...  roll on the summer :D

hey Baz...  cheers mate..  8)

I am keeping all the orginal bits I remove and storing them for safe keeping.  But I wont be re-fitting the OE seats..  they weigh a ton! I nearlly broke my back getting them out..lol.  I'm trying to keep the whole car really top quality..  so i've gone for some Porsche GT3 replica seats..  these are really comfy and in leather and carbon fibre...  and most importantly... extremely lightweight..  they weigh a fraction of the standard seats..  I'm having some alloy brackets made that should be here next week .. so will try and get them in then.

Heres a pic of the seats... in the waiting room

whats happening with the air box and cone filter? do you run both or just trying out each one? i sen both in the pictures and just wondered.

Hi mate,  I just took the green filter off...  I've gone back to the standard set up...  I only use the car on the road now.. and dont race it around so decided to take it off..    I bought a charge cooler kit from K-Tec and was going to use it with the kit.

Sounded nice to have the chatter when you lift off with the large filter.. but happy to leave it as it is now..  I think Reno knew what they were doing with that OE air box  :D

Thanks Big Dave and Scratcher :)  yep...  the compressor surge is nice.

I have seen the harnesses I want... (black 3" 4 point) I was about to get them..  but I dont know 100%  whether or not to get them.  I just put the standard seat belt back in on the passenger side..  they work fine with these seats.

The reason I'm unsure is if they will be a bit overkill..as I wont be doing any track days... just road use.  I'm trying to keep it as tastefull as poss.  I will have to think it over...

I used the car for the 1st time today with these seats fitted.  It feels like a totally different car now.  You feel the road and how the cars handling directly through your body...  feels like u'r part of the car!  awesome driving it now...  much more fun!   :D

I reckon if you put the standard Reno 5gtt seats on a Porsche GT3 it would feel pants to drive.  My advice to anyone with standard seats....  get some buckets...  it makes a lotta difference to the whole driving experience    8)

Have decided to put this on after all...  as the weathers warming up and to help get the air charge temp down..  and see how it goes..

thanks baz and smith..   :D   I am going to try the charge cooler...  but will see how i like it...   I have heard some good and some not so good reports.   I dont over-use the car..  it wont be on track.   I dont think a charge cooler is suited for a track car but road use should be fine... and keep the charge temps lower than my current set up  8)

I'll see how it goes anyways...  :)

For some reason,  I've always wanted to have one.. i guess it was one of the toys I used to be jelous of other guys having that I really fancied when I got another 5  (this one)

I've decided to change my brakes again...  I've gone for 285mm disks this time to fill those wheels up a bit more,  some new standard calipers and some Ferodo DS2500 pads.   I am hoping these pads will work well, I've heard good things about them so want to try them out.

Engine tune booked in 3 weeks..  just going to get the standard venturi carb set up with the right jets to run a little more boost and see how it goes.  (thanks GTTBoy for a great article on carb tuning!)

Hey baz,  yeh...  will have it rr'd ... need some new engine mounts ...  have a bit too much movement...  then will get the interior sorted finally and by then it should be time to get it set up..  think I've decided to go for some black harnesses...  I had a moment of inspiration and was thinking blue..  but decided to keep it stealth..lol.  Theres no other colour apart from red, grey, black on this car.. so might as well stick to it.

Hi mate, cars looking sweet now, i do like those seats.
I was the same as you in regards to the chargecooler, i had to have one, then i sold it a bit later on in favor of the FMIC i have now.
I also use DS2500 pads, they squeel a little at low speed braking but they're awesome so i can live with it.

cheers Steve,  I think I'll still fit it just to see how it goes (Its more curiousity than anything)..  I know of a few 5's that have been really impressive with the pace cc.   I was wondering what it was that you didnt like about it?  I think it will be better than my current cooler.  I only go for blasts on good weather days and wont be on track with it and pushing it to its limit...so I dont think I'll break it..

Looking forward to getting the bigger brakes sorted should be here by Friday..  if the pads squeek like a stuffed pig...  they might not be on very long tho..lol.  cheers for the info dude.

The rad & water reservoir were too small for the boost i was running IMO, if i gave it a good hard run @ 21psi the water was really warm !!
The large FMIC suits my application better now:)
The pads may not squeel on the different discs, i have ebc, my brother had ebc on his old rover with there red stuff pads & they squeeled so maybe it's my discs.

ok,  I might find the same as u...   I'll post an update on how I find it.  I think it will be a better choice than the front double capacity jobbie I have now.

cheers guys...  its taken a long time to get it like this.. about 3 years.. each time I think 'thats enough'  but it never seems to work out that way....

Interior is being sorted with a nice black carpet in the front half soon..  a few other bits I have got hold of as well...  the CD player and speakers are back in the front  (thats what I call music to my ears!) 4 point black harnesses going in.

Brakes...  285mm grooved disks..  new standard calipers.. ferodo ds2500 pads... already have areoquip hoses.

Engine... charge cooler.. big green cossy filter,  bigger turbo downpipe..(not a all in one) as I got one of those but wanted to keep my heat shield over the turbo, set up the fueling to run around 20psi... then have sum fun in the sun.

Cant wait to get these bits done...  bits on order so its a waiting game.

 Then...  'thats enough'  (unlikely)

lol... I can go a while without buying anything... but I start to get the judders and then I spend twice as much as I intended to start with

V6 is a great car...  I think its called illard blue and its stunning ... (is it the ph2 V6 your after?) I advise this is a better option if u can reach the little extra it costs I dont think they'll lose much value as they have reached that level now  :)

I had a Ph1 V6 before they made the ph2... had it almost 3 years and sold it just before the warrenty run out and the clutch was almost in need to replacement....so I timed that just right!  :D

Yes,  the ph1 was a good car.. but the ph2 is far better and I also love that blue...it just looks so right in that colour.  You've got good taste  8)

I used to go for a drive in the V6...and get home and go straight out again in the 5GTT...    as they are so different...I wanted the buzz from the turbo after the V6..lol.

The V6 weighs quite a bit... i think its around 1400kg but its full of luxury...  air con...  big heavy comfortable seats... but its a joy to drive... you can drive over pot holes in the road and not even feel them!  I would describe it as 'silky smooth'  you look at the speedo and its going past 80mph without any effort,  the gear changes just glide into gear and it goes well.... and sounds fantastic with the engine right behind your ears!  being rear wheel drive and all that weight over the rear wheels/fat tyres... you will put all the power down without any wheel spin even in the wet 8) But unless you've owned a V6 (either ph1 or ph2) you'll not realise the feeling you get driving it...  a real experience...  almost like a supercar experience (I know that sounds over the top.. but is a special motor) but saying that..  I did always feel it needed more power to match the style.

The 5 is completely different and very raw (its more of a toy...and a big grin factor..but I dont need to explain about that on here..lol)  stipped out of all the unnecessary bits you dont need it weighs around 780kg  (which isnt far off 1/2 the weight of the V6!) which is why its such a grin to fly along when the turbo kicks in and all hell breaks loose..lol     and it feels a lot faster than the V6 for sure!  But...  I have a performance meter... both cars were pretty equal as at the time I had 13" speedlines on the car...and they would just light up and spin off the line... where as the V6 would get all the grip down and not lose any time.. my 5 was prob about 160bhp and on the standard T2 turbo at the time.

The V6 wasnt totally standard tho...  I had a decat... BMC carbon filter..  superchipped.. so it was a bit up on standard. I also bought wizard of Nos N20 kit for it! but thank fook I sold the car before I fitted it and blew the thing up! (I was starting to realise...I was going too far...and it was time to move on) I sold it and got a Clio 182 which was the newer shape at the time and tuned the 5 up a bit more.

If you had a 5 tuned upto nearer 200bhp... it was eat the V6 alive.. but you have 2 totally different cars to contend with... luxury V's raw thrills.

 :)

Guys...  when you fit harnesses...  where abouts do you connect the lap strap mounting points to, that come out the sides of the seats?  I'm going to fit the rear straps around the boot brace. Any pics would be cool to give me a clue and would be helpful... cheers.
Title:
Post by: 5teve L on 09:19, Mon 02 June 2008
The lap straps go to the old belt mounting points by the doors(where the black piece of metal goes that the old belt attached to) & the clip mounting points in the centre by the handbrake.

I have a box of bits I have been putting on bit by bit...(I still have bits and bobs I havent put on yet)  I had bits from old projects... but this is a GT Tuning part....I dont think they make them anymore...but might be worth a call?   If not you should be able to get one made pretty easy...its just a 45deg bend.

Had to delay fitting the chargecooler..  will be done soon tho.

Have the brakes ready for going on...   they should work better and look huge next to the smaller ones on there now.. should fill up the gap inside those wheels nicely and anodised so they will stay shiny and not rust away  8)

Hey bazr...  CRN.  I got the last kit from them as well.. but decided to go for the bigger kit this time see how they feel.

My car doors have some movement in the door pins...  so getting those sorted in a few days... noticed them slightly catching more lately... so time to get them sorted.

Got a better head unit now...with dvd player on the front.. hope to have that in soonish...but not a priority...  the one in there works ok for now...but needed changing as it had a flip down front and crazy patterns on the display when it was playing that i didnt like much....it didnt fit in with the rest of the interior so its days were numbered

Stripped out more plastics out the back of the car now... so more polished paint on display.. looks better now     still a lot planned for the interior...  but dont want to rush it...its coming along slowly. Should be good when its finshed... in about 10 years.

When I bought it...to restore it into a 1st class factory example.

I just do what I think of on the day now...    no goals... long as its fun and reliable thats all I want from it..  it wasnt meant to get this messed around with.. I restored it to near factory spec....now I've butchered it again... but I would be bored otherwise.. lol.

Thank u Maître!  :) means a lot that you like what I've done.... as you also like them original as I do too.  I am trying to keep it as tastefull as I can whilst making these changes..  so feedback is always good to know its on the right track still  :)

Lots more to come...  I want to trim the seat 'cushion inserts in dark grey suede to match the rest of the grey areas on the car  (this is a way off yet) quite a bit to follow soon.

Its still a project at the mo..  hope to have a lot more done over the next few months..  wont be taking it anywhere until its completed.  Its frustraiting knowing how you want the car to look and perform but it takes time to get it there (its getting there tho)  I might be on this for the rest of this year doing bits at a time.  But wont be happy until its finished.

No,  I'm not a member of rtoc.

Took the car to Renault today to pick up the new door pins.. when I came out the entire workshop was standing around the car looking at it..lol  so was pretty cool.  Wish it had the brakes and charge cooler done ...but thats next.

Bit of an update...  with the help from my tuner doing a top job,  my charge cooler is now fitted..   have a tempory Carb to CC hose.. whilst waiting for my polished cross over pipe to arrive and hose ends.

He's tuning the carb in a few weeks..  finally some booooost!    just gotta order some jets...looking forward to that  :)

thats looking well good, even with the temp pipe work.
are you keeping the grill off? it looks proper mean like that, i like how the filter pokes out. actually, i don't think i.ve seen anything on this car i don't like. apart from it not sitting outside my house.

Thanks Scratcher  8)    I took the grill off to see how the front mount cooler would look back where the green filter is (I'll need a smaller induction kit to fit that)  and took a pic whilst the grill was off..  :)   (it looks even better without the front bumper on...but I dont think I'd get away with it! lol   )  I havent re-fitted the grill and I was just seeing how it run with better air flow to the induction kit without the grill...  and will wait till its set up with it open and see how it goes.  I kinda like the open grill area... you get a few people look in their mirror and wonder WTF it is

1st thing is to get it tuned up in the next few weeks.  I have ordered the new main/air corrector jets from K-Tec.  I am after the jet in enrichment..  but couldnt get that from K-tec...anyone know who can supply one?

Also...

I have ordered the Red Samco 90deg corners (from Demon Tweeks that takes around 1 month for del) for the crossover pipe..   but would be helpful is someone can tell me if I've ordered the right size 90deg hoses?

The one from the charge cooler is slighter bigger size... so went for a 60mm corner...and the carb top side 57mm ?  and alloy pipe 57mm.  does this all sound the same as the ones u guys have (that run CC's).

Going to get a matching rad top hose as well just to tie it all in... and later on...I'll drip feed in bits and pieces with other red pipe work around to finally complete this thing.

I have another trick bit coming for the interior soon..  and some black harnesses that I havent ordered yet.  I want to do something with the door cards... not sure yet but will be subtle.

i like the open grill look. i'm running it too but mine just looks shabby with the standard rad and intercooler so if i ever find a decent phase 1 grill i'll cover it up.
it'll look the mutt's with all the red pipe work in. do you think you'll ever stop? haha.
keep it up mate  8)

Good plan for yours with the ph1 grill..  8)  but as you said... very hard to find one thats in good condition... or any condition.

Thanks for backing the idea with the red hoses on the cross over pipe.  Its a fairly long wait till they arrive but not really in any hurry  :)

I am just about to write a list of the bits I know I need to finish it off so I know where I am...  not gonna add to it after that  :!:    :)

Have the car booked in for 2 weeks from now for setting up the carb and running some boost  8)  thinking of linking up my water injection again.. (with the proper size jet this time) but will wait and see how it goes.

Oh ball locks!  got the 285mm disks all fitted on... but the wheels are like a split type wheel inside...and has a 2nd level that reduces the size of the insides of the wheel!  So u guessed it...   couldnt get the wheels back on afterwards      (almost decided to get some other wheels just to get the brakes on..but I like em too much)  so the disks came off again... and have ordered some Clio Williams grooved disks and see how they fit.   If they dont give me any joy...  I'll get some nice Wilwoods.  I asked Hi-Spec but they dont do a kit to fit these wheels.

Quick update....  the samcos turned up today...  just did a quick test fit...  i've now measured the gap between the hoses and can now order the cross over pipe to join it up!  I test fit another smaller induction kit... I think I will put the front alloy intercooler back on and have this silver mesh induction kit behind it...  will look better and should be be cool with both coolers fitted  8)

Hey Scratcher,   I know what you mean as the boost circuit wont be as short with both coolers.  I have seen some quick 5's with both fitted but I want to try it and see how it goes, if I like it... I'll keep it that way or change it back if not.  I have a long way to go till I get it how I want it.. but will try a few different things out and see what i like the best

Cheers for liking the work so far mate  :)

How the hell do you manage to keep it that clean? I have just spotted the turbo, even the exhaust housing and manifold is bright silver, is it painted? If so what with?

I'm suprised you haven't gone for a stainless steel heatsheild.

Never seen such a good looking engine bay.  8)

It looks good because the boost pipes are red and the coolant hoses are original black when they are all the same colour i think it can be too much imo. Very good i shall now steal this idea for my own car!

Hey Ash,   best way to keep it clean is hire someone to do it for you!   :D   with the turbo...  the part that you can see thats not under the heatshield is properly polished metal (not painted)  I zoomed in a bit to show u..

I tried polishing up the part of the housing under the heatshield but its not the same metal finish and like a rough surface.  So I just thought I'd use some extreme high temp alloy paint, and its hung on! I thought it would flake off soon as the turbo got some action..  it has stayed bright silver...  so happy with that.  I dont like using paint tho, the gearbox is properly polished up also.   But where the manifold connects to the turbo that has high temp silver on it as well.. as I couldnt get to that any other way.

 Hope this helps.. :)

haha..  I have tried to keep it as tasteful as poss..  I agree about the hose thing.  You see a lot of bays packed full of colours, but they lose the detail.  I dont even think its looks as good yet as its going to, when the front alloy int.cooler is back and the silver mesh induction kit...  that will really set it off.  I am tinkering with the idea of a genuine carbon fibre turbo heat shield and carbon perc hose and scuttles.. but other things to do 1st (just getting some more brake bits chromed up then get them fitted)  Just ordered some carbon fibre for other parts  8)

I have ordered some more bits that should be here in a few days.. that will prob be the majority of the engine done then....(but I always say that!   )  happy days

Interesting, my engine is reasonably clean but i find it is really let down by the brown manifold (my exhaust housing is hidden under a stainless steel heatshield so thats not really an issue).

When the head was off i did wire brush the exhaust manifold the best i could and painted with silver hammerite but like you say it just flaked off.

the carbon fibre looks well sexy, especially with your seats.
have you thought about maybe going carbon on the covers behind the rear arch in the boot? i reckon that'd be a nice touch.

 Thanks scratcher.

Not sure the bit u mean mate..  do u mean the boot plastic strip that the Reno badge fits on?  I was going to get a carbon rear roof spoiler...  then I suddenly realised it would be gone as soon as I left the car anywhere!  (some pikey would pull the thing off and run off with it!) but I have plans for more interior carbon in the future.

Hey Baz,  I enquired about getting the door cards made to shape but they were a bit expensive...  I was quoted the moulds to make them would be £600 + £400 for the parts  = £1000 !     so decided to go for the flat cards

After thinking about it,  having them made to shape can look a bit too much..  (like your over doing it)  it has to be kept to suit the car..  and I think the flat ones are better suited to the 5 and not too fancy looking.  I think they will look good, better looking than the originals.

the carbon looks sick. it goes really well with the seats  :)
how are the door cards looking? was it much trouble getting the handles to fit?

Thanks scratcher mate its good to get your feedback..  looks much better now the front carbon matches the back and the seats and the Tungy grey goes well with it all. I am going to add some alcantara on the plastic trim thats left... when I get around to it...and around the gauges etc.. so you dont see the plastic ...just suede.

Fitting the front cards were a bit tricky at the start...(with the handles)  soon as you work out how to get the handle/metal rod to line up and bolted on ts easy..just take your time with it,  the second door card was very quickly fitted as I knew what to do the 2nd time.  The nut holding the door handle on is a  'sliding nut'  so I made that a fixed nut which made it easier to fix to.

Thanks

hey baz  :D   thanks mate,   I contacted CGB and they have a Cyl head specialist they use which is where mine was done.

I am happy with how its going at this stage... but its still on going..  lots of bits to do still... I have only just started the interior really and want to change the brakes that I have got in a box somewhere.. and a few other bits that I have finally got hold of..  its about 75% there... but its a slow pace so will take me a while.. but it will all come together eventually..   :D  (but very happy with it right now)

Thanks bud, just seen how yours is coming along...and your catching up fast! all the hard work is paying off mate 8)

Not a lot to update on mine...  I have the new brackets fitted I wanted...  mainly the rad cage and top brackets are now blinged and bonet stay bar is now matching in chrome.

Few more new bits I've gathered...

Not sure about fitting the coilovers, I've done a bit of tinkering I like my konis a lot more lately...but will try them sometime.  The other bits are anodised Clio Williams front disks...they are the biggest I can fit inside these wheels I've got at the mo...sadly the 280mm disks didnt allow the wheels to go back on! lol  so had to abandon them!   have some 16v brake extender brackets ready to fit with the disks. Got a chromed water pump to go on that should tie the rest of the engine together nicely  8)  Gearbox end cover to finish that off.. and new handbrake lever to tidy up the inside and give a better quality finish to the interior..

..happy with how its going... the interior is the main area to complete next as its only half way there.. happy boosting everyone  8)

Post by: GTTboost on 21:28, Fri 05 December 2008
lol..  oh yesss...if its not blinging it goes in the bin!    theres plenty of black and grey around on the car...so it balances it out quite well.. those are the final bits that should tie the rest of whats done together finally...no more.

Yep,  I got the gaz as the koni's felt a bit too soft for me...even on the firmest setting... but have got used to them now and happy enough with them.

Good choice    I went to see one myself before the V6..  but it had been tracked with a cage and it just had too many squeeks I didnt recognise as I think it had been well 'used' (as they should be).

But like you said, with the credit crunch its a perfect oppertunity to buy a minter for a good price.  This would also be my own choice if I was you.  I would be pretty sure even the MK2 V6 will lose more value than a well cared for 911.  The ph1's (top condition) will be lucky to fetch £9k in another few years.. (if I had one now it would be in the Autotrader fast!)  and I have a bad feeling the ph2 will drop to around £12k by then...or just dam hard to sell.  When they 1st came out they were a novelty and had a lot of interest from buyers, but I think they may be losing the edge a bit now.  I still like the mk2's but I think there are other cars that would give me more exitement...like the old Porsche  8)  go for it mate..  u'll be waxing that more than u did the 5!

Its been a while...just a quick update ...

Had a few xmas prezzies for the 5...  and now fitted a few bits..

Some Omp harnesses and a nice Sparco suede steering wheel..   8)

Heres a pic to compare the large standard wheel to the more sporty Sparco..  it fits in much better with the theme of the car and with the other upgrades already done..

   and fitted...

....and the belts are now in... 4 Point 3" for more comfort.  I didnt like the bright yellow OMP logos....so I've darkened them up to tone them down a bit..

Hey Baz..  not bad thanks mate..  now I've driven the car with that new steering wheel  (330mm) ...its completely transformed the 'feeling' of the car..  it just feels like a go cart now... 8)   I went out and didnt want to stop driving it.   If anyones thinking of changing there st/wheel...get a 330!  wish I'd done it years ago now... and the seats just lock you in...so u can feel the cars response to the road...  rather than a spongy bouncy seat and a bus size steering wheel..lol..     feels like a different car.

Cheers dude   :D

Thanks rs250nut, (and frix),  I have had a few 5's... but always knew this would be the last one I'd own... so thought I might as well go for it and make it as good as I could  :)  the carbon door cards really give a nice quality feel to the interior and look neat as well..  good to hear u have some going in yours..   8)

Yep,  they can also supply the rear qtrs at the same place. wheels are a nightmare to decide on... I wanted to be a bit different but not too over the top..  and they seem to fit the theme of the car quite well...but a bit of a nightmare to keep clean.  It was between these and Ronal Turbo's a while back..  but quite a few people had the Ronals already.. so I went for these  :)

I'm amazed it's still that clean this time of year, i should post a picture of mine as a contrast. You can't even see the numberplate on the back, but theres not much i can do because i live in a small village and have to use the filthy lanes to get home. :(

How do you get on with the steering wheel? Does it leave you with black palms?

Haha... thats handy having plates like that when you go past a speed camera... that must be a nightmare to keep it clean...  you need some anti-mud-sticking-paint  :D

Black palms?     No...   well happy with the wheel...its nice soft suede and feels good..   its made the steering more responsive...  I rate it one of the best things I've done so far to the car..  makes the whole car feel better and more fun to drive 10/10.

It's a nice wheel, the reason i asked was i've heard suede steering wheels can rub off and leave your palms black.

Must just be the really sweaty people that have issues with them.

Haha..  yeh..  I think ur right...  I was going to say the same thing.. luckily I dont have sweaty palms..  but u could be right I havent noticed anything yet though.  I've had a suede steering wheel in a few other cars with no probs.  I've seen sweaty people corrode the metal plating off the gear changers before..  there are some very corrosive people out there!

Keep looking at my standard alloys and thinking about painting them to match the car with a silver lip..   I had them professionally refurbed and didnt like the silver they came back with.  So just had a play... I ran out of paint   :? ...so only managed to do 2! have some more paint on order for next week...

Heres a before and after...

after...  (they edge is still masked up but it will be silver)

colour match...

But what you need to do is finish all 4 of them, and give them to me. :D

Seriously though, i had this idea for mine i reckon they would look nice against the red.

Cheers bud   :D   The place the reconned them in silver suggested doing them grey with a silver lip a year ago..  it wasnt till I got them back in silver I wish I had done them like they said..  If they dont look that good on the car..  I'll keep them as spares.  I'm still not sure how they'll look on the car but need to find out or i'll keep wondering  :?:   Just been waiting 24hrs before laquering them up..  and need a bit more paint for the others.

Yeh,  I think on any colour they will look good..  looks like 2009 is the year of the grey and silver lip.

Just stuck them on to see what they look like...

I'm staying with the 15's .. I think they suit the car better...

also...doing a back to back comparison..  the car feels like jelly on a plate compared to the 15s..  it feels a lot more planted and I could feel myself needing to be carefull when corning..  so the 15s have there job back..  :)   happy tweeking peoples

They look really smart.

I imagine the ruined handling might be down to the flex in the tyre walls on the standard 'balloons'

When i corner in mine i can feel it, that slight wobble when you first turn in. Push it a bit harder and you can get the back end sliding slightly for a 'shit your pants' ride.

Let go of the loud pedal at this point and you can get it backwards into a hedge, not recommended.

Cheers ash,  yeah...I think ur spot on with that..  I forgot how well a set of low profiles perform..  they are like space hoppers compared to the 15's..lol..   I know what you mean about the 'SYP's' ride!

Cheers bud,  when I went out to take them off I really thought they looked good... but I know I have the best wheels on now after how it handled.  Yep..   I found some 195/45/13 and thought about it... but low profiles on small wheels just look lame..  the chubby tyres actually suit the car on those wheels...  they just dont work lol.  Thanks for letting me know tho... it was a good tip! I think the best tyres are the ones Hoolio has gone for...  the r888.

Hey mate,  they are 195/55/13  you can just about make it out on the side walls on the pic of the 2 wheels above.

Also the speedlines are only 5.5" wide...so not as much grip as a wider 15" wheel. It all depends what ur used to I guess.

Hi gtmatt,  oh I see what you meant :)  no... I've had this car over 4 years and the previous owner wasnt called Glen  :) I dont belong to rtoc

Have a look on page 1 of this thread when I 1st restored it...the rest has been done over the years and shown along the way on this thread  :D Everything on the car was standard when I got it apart from a 4" zorst and a dump valve.

It didnt need much under the arches... just a clean up...there was no rust under the arches..  just a clean and some Hammerite was all it needed.

Next bit to do...  getting the trim out for trimming  :)  looking forward to doing this bit...  I'm going to cover it all in suede alcantara to match the rest of the trim much better than the bare grey plastic.

...bit of bare naked A Pillar action...

The worst part in the car was the gauge pods (for the SPA gauges)...  they were Supermarket quality and just made the whole front area look cheap as chips. So now they are smashed up ( ) I'm going to find some other way of mounting them to look better fitted and better quality..   thats the plan anyway.. should look a lot better.. but havent trimmed anything before so will get the best stuff for the job and hope I dont mess it up.. think it will be alright tho  8)

Haha..  thanks mate..  I was worried about taking them out  (before I started)  where they fit between the dash board and the doors as its a bit of a tight squeeze in there, but after un-doing the screws and clips...  they came out on there own.. without any tug of war games..  :D  so all good!

It's the section around the rear window thats the hardest to remove, it can crack very easily as you have to bend it slightly to get it free from the window.

Hey blueredblue,  you get the carbon supplied cut to shape but without any fixings, you can then either screw them in or any way you prefer..  but they fit perfectly and finish the doors off nicely.

Would you be able to point me in the right direction for such a glue?

I want to keep the interior standard on mine but on the rear quarter panels the fabric has come away and started to sag.

Question is, will i be able to remove the carpeting from the rear cards without it stretching out of shape or tearing. Might as well give it a go, there not that great anyway.

Sorry, no idea,  I've never had to remove the trim on those panels.  I would have thought it would be possible, but would prob tear if you force them as they have been on there for a few decades and the material will also be less stretchy... and more brittle to pull away.

I had my seat cushions trimmed professionally in the same alcantara to match... (with some extra detail stitched in)  but after getting them back... they have been trimmed an inch too short so had to send them back to be redone...  but having the seat inserts done the same is starting to tie it all in well  8)

Thanks very much guys...  its really enjoyable seeing it get better each time something is done.. I am really impatient and always see the bits that need doing....and not the bits that have been done!  If that makes sense...

Quick pic of the trim thats been fitted so far...   had to take the other seat to the trimmers to get the alcantara inserts made to match the trim panels.. will look better once there both back in..

Thanks guys for the thumbs up on the work so far..  just a quick update...

I have got the seats back from trimmers... the guy has done a great job! I've had the inserts made to match the rest of the trim in alcantara..  also had some pleats added I've seen pleats like this on the very top of the range latest RS porsche seats and even the same alcantara... so thought I'd give it a try on mine... very happy indeedy!  They comfort was good before..but now  its like sitting on Britney Spears breasts they feel so good!  I got in and didnt wanna get out of them again!    :)

These will now  match the rest of the trim eventually..  8)

Hi Dan,  I used Hycote as it give a far better quality finish.  I have some Renault Tungsten grey, but I didnt want them the same colour (I wanted them a fraction darker)  so I went and had a look at the charts and found that Ford Palaris grey was exactly the colour I wanted.  That is the colour I used.

The alcantara is £50 per sq. meter

Many thanks

The rad pipe is made by GT Tuning and the other one from Demon Tweeks..  measure the gap and the size of the pipe and they have a list of all the variations..  so its easy to find the one you need  8)

hey mate...  u'll be fine... they fit straight on no probs..  the only tricky bit is the bar that connects the door handle/to open the door...   u will see it will need to be adjusted slightly to line up as the handle willl now be flush to the door card...  but take ur time and u will find after u've done the 1st one the other side will take about 2 minutes!  will be worth it as they really do look good when there on.

Hope this helps  8) take care mate.

Hey baz mate,  havent been on for a few months soz for my late reply.  Haha.. yes thats a good question..  how many times have I said 'thats it now'     the tungy is tucked up in the garage and been sleeping under a blanket in the warm....bit like me really!  :)

Only slight idea I've had is fitting some 16's as I like the look of the lower '40' profile tyres and the arches being filled a bit more .... wheels are easy to swap and change... so its never a problem to change them in 5 mins if they dont look how you plan.. but I was thinking about a change to something like the oz alloys?

But a bit unsure if they look a bit 'boy racer'  so maybe its just one of those flash in a pan ideas..  the car has been awesome this year loved driving it in the summer ...completely fault free for the whole year again..  awesome!  8)   hope ur doing good dude!  Happy xmas everyone...and have a good 2010!

Thanks linni,  Its been a long journey to get it this far...  almost made it to the end now..   I want to get the rear interior of the car trimmed at some point... with some more carbon and suede.. just deciding on how I'm going to do it.. so it looks as good as the front...I think it should be looking nice when its all done.

Good luck with yours...  take your time and make it as good as you can...and it will look great!  8)

How do you keep the bodywork so shiny

I use this in a bucket with warm water... and it just gives it a nice deep gloss shine like its been polished.. just leather the car dry and your all done  8)

   http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/p ... category=3 (http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=122&idcategory=3)

In between washes....  you can use a quick detailer...

   http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/detailing ... d_361.html (http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/detailing-sprays/meguiars-ultimate-quik-detailer/prod_361.html)

If you feel the paint every few months you can feel if the surface has any contaminants  stuck on the surface.. which a wash wont be able to remove on its own,  so then I use a Clay bar...

  http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/p ... Category=4 (http://www.waxamomo.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=4)

..it looks like glass once its been done....like new again..  8)  if you havent used it before it looks tricky but it is really very easy to use once you have given it a try. You can use it on the glass and wheels as well... but throw it away once your finished with it.

After all that...if your still feeling like some more shine...   I find Autoglym is very good and easy to remove.  You need to seal the paint after its been clayed so it will need a wax afterwards to protect the newly cleaned paintwork.  This will seal the paint and wax it at the same time..

Autoglym Super Resin Polish is ideal for applying by hand as well before you put the EGP on. Theres a lot of fillers in it, perfect for hiding most of the swirl marks if you have any.

It lasts about 3 months on mine, but mines red and we all know what happens to red in the sun.  :(

I've got a craving for some factory looks again...  so I'm putting the speedines back to silver... (already done that bit)  and going to raise the suspension back up.   I might use the coilovers (front) to do this as it will give a firmer ride still even with a slight raise in height.  I'm going to put the rear wiper back on...original yellow fogs back on, a more standard looking exhaust and also looking at a few other changes inside the car. (as factory fresh as possible from the outside)

I just want a change from the boy racer look (for this year anyway    ) and you just cant beat the factory styling..  the older they get the better they seem to look to me!  8)

I might just go full on raised back to factory standard height again...

haha     thats why I have a 5gtt      These cars are great for changing around. I changed all the bits I wanted in a few hours...  painted to rest of the wheels silver again and fitted the fogs back on... looks nice and factory again now, pleased I have the original decals back on.  Only the ride height to think about and thats it...(I like it this height now I've seen it) all done in a few hours...until I fancy a change again, good fun

Just got the refreshed speedlines back on..  they look like they just come out there box from the factory..

Thanks Ben  :)   I dont know but I'll take it to somewhere this summer just for interest and see.  The last time I had it rolling roaded was about 4 years ago on the old engine.. it didnt even have an uprated fuel pump back then but was 176bhp.  Has had quite a lot done since then.

I'd be happy to see around 180-190 though.  It never lets me down and love it how it is now..  8)

I cant remember how much it was I removed in weight from the car, when I put the new trim in.. but it was around 40kg (or more) which really made a difference to the way it handles/stops and go's

Well with engine tuning or setting up the fueling etc.  I leave that to the tuner (ex. BB Tuning guy)  I dont touch anything interally... (I mean the engine incase that sounds bad!   ) thats why its been so reliable  :D

The bolt on bits and tidying up and re-trim takes long enough as it is...  so have been busy with that most of the time I've owned it.  Yours is a great start with how it is now... so look forward to hearing how its going  8)

I've been following your thread a bit lately GTTboost but only from near the end, so I went to the beginning and I have to say you have a definite modding and cleaning OCD!! Unbelievable how you manage to keep it so utterly mint?! Not just the body, interior and engine bay but every last square mil! You must be gutted if you take it out and it unexpectedly starts raining - dirt could get on the underneath!  :!:
No seriously though, you've done an amazing job, well done.. have you taken it to many shows and won concours competetions? For me the engine bay is probably the most impressive part -some serious cash invested there.
I'd love to be able to get to the stage where I can do some of the stuff you have again, the chassis and sill repairs on mine and the lack of space are making progress move along at a snail's pace. I've owned it for nearly 10 years as well - should've kept an eye on these things when I 1st got it

I have a few lucky dips in the garage.. you want to buy a raffle ticket?  :D

Thats good stuff..  I have always been amazed how well you can clean these carpets up... considering there 20+ years old.  I'm sure they dont look this good when there new.

I've gone back to a grey carpet now (after the black one)  and was lucky to find a decent one that just needed a quick clean up and it looks like new again.  The red one's you need sunglasses after cleaning them!  8)

I got mine from K-Tec ...its a Pace charge cooler.

Thanks Dan,  yeh..  I took a trip to the local car shop and all they had was Alloy wheel spray paint and it looked okay so I did a test spray and it worked out how I wanted it to.  It doesnt say what colour silver it is on the can, its just an alloy wheel paint.  Hope this helps.

If yours need a refurb,  you might be better off having a specialist take care of them to bring them back to 'as new' again.  I had mine professionally refurbed a while back to remove any scuffs..   so they only needed a colour change this time which was quite easy.

il post a pic up on me thread of my interior it worked really gud! Smells fresh too lol

Mine came with a Red carpet as standard (like yours did) but I think some of the Tungy's did come with Grey as standard..  I think Renault just decided what they had in stock when they put them together when they were new.

Raiders came with Black as standard.

I wont be changing mine again :) a few months ago I changed it from red to black and then to grey...lol  and sticking with the grey now  :)

This was mine before I fitted it...

P.S  I'll post your tickets tommz! Thanks for your fast order!!  8)

I got mine from CGB,  I think he's got quite a few there to choose from if you wanted one. The only reason I changed mine was to match the suede trim.  No,  I just wanted the standard looks on the outside again...  the good thing is with the exterior is you can just change a few bits and its back to looking standard again..  all I have done is re-fit the fogs/speedlines/red decals/rear wiper  8)

Its like having a different car in half a day of changing a few bits  :)

What does a referb actually consist of do they fill the scuffs or just sand them out I'm sure it can't be hard to do myself ..?
Mine also has a grey carpet think that came standard maybe the grey ones came with the none decaled 5s

Your right mate! A mite buy a grey one just to have incase I feel like changing it!

My wheels were a bit scuffd I got them powdercoated, payd 180 it's well worth it, they dip them in acid so it strips everything off then if there's any scuffs/curb marks they fill them in, then paint them and pick them up the same day :)

hey dan,  its not body filler, its called 'Bondo Spot Putty' and I think Halfords sell it.

Here's a link to show you the process of repairing kerbed alloys..  the end result would be much better to pay to have them done though, as you cant get the same result with an aerosole can..  but it can still look good if you take your time and do a good job of it  8)

My 'F' Plate Tungy came with red carpet.

Maybe they ditched the red carpet on later models?

Same here.. I had an H Tungy that had a grey carpet...it may have been an option when they were ordered new from Reno. Like sunroofs were etc.

cheers James!  good choice of carpet..  think I must have gone through all the colours by now lol.

Soz havent posted for a bit..  had other things happening.  It was the 1st sunniest day in 2011 today..  so the 5 is alive and waiting to hit the streets!  The winter was the longest one ever..  hopefully it stays like this now for a while  8)

The 5's just had everything I had that was awaiting to be fitted (from boxes of bits I had bought and wrapped up in the loft)  last week had a new uprated clutch as the last one that only covered a few hundred miles was faulty but there was no warranty.. so to make it right I had a new uprated one fitted for 2011 which should last a long time to come with my granny shifting.  Just had a new Timing chain and tensioner.. the chrome water pump is now on and looks great in there.  A shiney grear box casing and few other little bits to finish all the engine bits off.. (I really mean its finished this time!!   ) and the only part of the braking system I hadnt re-newed was a new brake master cylinder..  so thats just been fitted and the brakes feel spot on now.. the car runs and sounds super smooth and just a real pleasure to drive. over the winter in had a new engine rebuilt from scratch and not missing out anything, so its better than its ever been.  I'll need to run the engine in again as it hasnt done any miles over the last 6 months.

Just rolled the 5 out to see the light!

Cheers Baz man, good to hear from you mate  8)   with the 5..    havent driven her for about 6 months,  had lots done though..  and just looking forward to the summer now..  had a few nice days lately and was good to take her out again.  The only thing I need to do is get the wiring fitted to one of the S.PA guages  (oil pressure) its nice to have that as a back up..  I moved the guage to fit into the new center pods that I built but the wiring didnt quite reach, so might need to order a new cable to get it all working.. I'll give S.P.A a call tomorrow.

Only other thing... I have a new set of wheels and tyres..they measure about an inch deeper on the dish than the black wheels that I already have.  I wanted to see how 16's would look for a change as I have never tried 16's with 40 low profiles before..  but not sure if I can be bothered to fit them as they are in boxes.. and the tyres havent been fitted on them yet.. and I'm liking the retro wheels at the moment.. will see how I feel later on as I have days when I wake up and just decide to change it around again for a bit of fun (before putting it back to standard again)   :)

Its funny you should mention that,  that was the 1st time since last summer I gave it a claying..  really needed it tho.  That last pic was afterwards, the others were just before.

Sounds good about those size wheels.. they look spot on for size on yours.  Might have to give this a go nearer the summer.. it would make a change as its something I havent done on mine before, cheers baz.

Not much to tell you,  I wanted to give the suspension and underside a good check up and clean for the new year which I do every year now the good weather is back.. It's a good idea to keep these cars fresh and they will stay that way if you look after them..  I quite enjoyed doing it again and caught a nice sun tan at the same time..  so it was a good sunday afternoon.

I was gutted when I bought bigger disks the last time and they looked the whiskers!  until I found out the 15" wheels wouldnt go back on afterwards

I was lucky,  my nipples were nice enough to have them on page 3 of the Renault 5 weekly!

Little bit of a game plan for the summer..   I'm bored with the metal floor in the back and going to complete the re-trim throughout the rear of the car.   I have a nice Alpine system but I dont want to turn the car into a bump and grind wagon     so there wont be any extreme bass or subs in there anywhere.  Just some smaller quality components.

I am going to trim all of the plastics in the back the same as the front in grey suede.. and adding a light weight false floor with a hidden area that will be also covered so wont be seen until the door is lifted.   Thinking of fitting the 4 channel Alpine amp in there so its hidden and then adding some small size (but quality) speakers..  maybe components neatly fitted into the suede trim.  They will be flush with the trim on the rear pillars and also hidden in the floor.

It should all just look like a matching Suede trim when its done.. with a few discreet speakers at an angle towards the front.

How it looks now.. 'before I start'  some speakers I was playing around with positioning..  but just testing where things will go at the moment.

There was some masking tape on the dash whilst I was making these last Sunday afternoon..

Just need to add the red buttons and fit them in and there done.

I saw something that I thought would fit in with the rest of the trim at demon tweeks..

and gave it a try.. thought it was better than a rubber mat

That will be awesome to see your 5 with a fresh new coat of paint  8)  looking forward to seeing how it all looks when its all done 8)

I think I'm all polished out.. lol..  havent been doing much of that lately..  I'm working on the trim this summer..  to finish the interior off.  Have designed the new rear quarter trims.. to house the speakers, been trying to get them fabricated out of carbon fibre..  my carbon guy is all booked up for a while, so waiting to hear from another fabricator at the moment.

After a bit of research, I've gone with Focal component speakers in the end..  they've exceeded my expectations already and thats before I have fitted them  :)   The frames and build quality of the speaker is awesome..  I've heard Focal before and was really amazed how good they sound, so should work out well in the end.  (going for quality sound rather than shaking the car sound lol)

The cones look like carbon fibre (but they are glass fiber)..  and the frames are in the same colour as the car, so will match the trim..

Finally got around to having a bit of fun with the speaker panels..    still didnt do as much as I liked and didnt get around to fitting the tweeter...which will be flush mounted next to this one.

Trimmed the panel in suede and it came out well and it fitted like a glove in its new home..   Still the other panels needed to do to connect to this one and some carpet up the wheel arches and back of the boot and the floor..  and other bits needed.. but its good to get it rolling.. the speaker covers need painting as they came in this colour..

Added a bit of coding around the sun roof as well..  would like to trim the sun visors sometime..  I did a bit more but forgot to take any pics..
