keepin body work pretty much standard apart from removal of front and rear bumper strips and getting rid of hole for exhaust just to give it that clean look, sort out bonnet gonna change that scoop ive already ditched the bonnet hinges for pins for easy access to work on the engine bay so complete bonnet will lift off, as i said earlier 8 point roll cage, keepin all the interior ,standard seats etc but will have harnesses with front seats wanted to give it that standard look mixed with the race look, keepin to standard colour of good old renault black,im not one for shopping trolley spoilers or massive body kits you seem to lose that classic shape of the 5

Sounds like a good deal!

I like theb wheels as well..  I have 15's and Speedline 13's..    but the 15's always seem to look just slightly too small to me... and 16's always look spot on (as I am really fussy with things looking right)  so good choice .... 17's are too big and chav so 16's would be my choice as well.

I have seen these on another 5 before..  but may need some nice 4 pots  behind them to really set them off...

Keep up the good work  8)

I have that pgti mag and I know the car you mentioned..  that guy has done everything to it from top to toe! Without sounding like I'm trying to be nice..lol..  when I 1st saw these wheels on a Grey 5 (owned by a guy called Biggs) they were my fave wheel.. if I find a pic I'll send u a PM of it.

Yes... I have had my latest (Tungsten) 5GTT for 3 years.. and its just part on me... I dont think I could ever bring myself to part with it.

But by the sounds of yours... the spec and the ideas will be well worth all the effort...  u sound as mad as me!

Keep us posted mate..  8)

Wow

And I thought I had alot of bodywork on my car.
Insane amounts of respect for taking on such a big project, and of course having the patience required for it.

Post by: lexgtturbo on 21:29, Wed 28 May 2008
Im sure it will turn out at least as good, if not even better  8)
Youre weldings looks good and so does youre filler work, youre car is most likely going to be a stunner, as long as you dont go tired of the whole project.

Are you going to spray it with the original black colour or havnt you decided yet?
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 21:41, Wed 28 May 2008
thanks mate, there has been times when ive thought what the hell im a doing especially the welding it just seemed to go on and on,but i can see light at the end of the tunnel now,and im dying to get back behind the wheel, got to drive my mates tungy grey one last night,i had the biggest smile  :D its gonna start looking like a5 soon once she starts going back together, yes im going for renault black but lookig at your colour im not sure now
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 21:51, Wed 28 May 2008
If you want I can see if I can find some cool colours to maybe consider.  i know of a insane candy orange with black pearl or something. ill try to link a pic of the colour  8)
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 21:57, Wed 28 May 2008
cheers mate, iwas thinking more of a variation of black, black with blue or red pearl, seen this amazing colour on that program overhaulin,it was lexus amathist pearl totally blew me away
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 22:05, Wed 28 May 2008
hmm i dont think ive seen that episode...
choosing the right colour for a respray take time, and some more time.... not easy choosing.
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 22:13, Wed 28 May 2008
mate i was all set for good old renault black till i saw your car
Title:
Post by: scratcher on 15:16, Thu 29 May 2008
can you see a red pearl over black? it'd look well'a good (in my imagination).
it is hard finding a new colour, i wanted my KA done in the vauxhall VXR blue, but i done my bmx instead, haha. looks good though.
our mate's white 5 looks like a good project, is it only the front and rear quater that need the work doing?
you lot are doing well fixing up the 5's, you could start a little bussiness there mate.  8)
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 16:09, Thu 29 May 2008
thanks scratcher, you would only see red pearl on black in the sun a bit like the black on type rs which has a blue looks very nice on a sunny day,yeh mate the white 5 needs rear qaurter, front crossmember,headlight/slam panel,my mate bought the whole front end from renault in one complete panel for just over 100 bucks which i thought was pretty good going, also hes replacing the sub frame intercooler etc,me and my mates just want to keep the 5 alive   cant wait to have them on the road tho would make a great magazine feature three mates with three different 5s dont you think?
Title:
Post by: scratcher on 16:18, Thu 29 May 2008
yeah, that'd be a well good feature, showing how you've restored them and everything. i let a mate have a go in mine last week and he's already selling up his mini and spares to get a 5, haha.
and 100 golds for the whole front is a massive bargain, just the cross member is normally 40 odd?
keep up the good work man.
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 16:28, Thu 29 May 2008
   thats the same as my mates,my mate with the white one only drove hondas but decided what the hell and bought it he still drives his hondas,my other mate with the tungy grey car has always loved 5s and picked this one up cheap, just needed assembled,it catches us all that 5 bug  ,thanks scratcher will do, going offshore tommorrow  missin my misstress already

top post made made for a very good read, where did you get your front pannel from and how hard was it to fit , di the front pull a part or move ??
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 21:43, Fri 06 June 2008
hi benl, thanks for your comments :D i put on the front end in pieces the drivers headlight panel and the passenger headlight panel/inner wing were seperate from the front slam panel both the head light panels were from renault and the slam panel was from beevers panels they have got a web site they are really cheap and fit really well, but if your car needs the whole front end eg with crossmember you can buy the whole panel with the headlight panels and slam panel in one from renault for about £110,the slam panel was easy to remove as was the headlight panels they are just spot welded they are easly drilled or body chisled off,if your doin the whole front end you will have to be carefull seperating that inner wings as you can see by my posts i had to replace the drivers side with one from another car hence its red, hope this is helpfull to you dont hesitate to ask any more questions if you get stuck cheers baz
Title:
Post by: Benl on 22:08, Fri 06 June 2008
cool stuff, im going to be putting all new parts on mine very soon and im a welder by trade so looking forward to the work just was worried about the front moving when cut. But if yours has been ok then fingers crossed i have the same luck :)
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 00:59, Sat 07 June 2008
no probs benl,if you leave the cross member on theres no movement because that and the sub frame hold it steady you must always fit wings and bonnet tho to get the true alignement and all your gaps correct then i just vise gripped everything and you know yourself just a couple of tacks and then away you go :D it is very satisfying building a car from the ground up,is yours really rotten at the front or is it not bad? youll have to post some before and after pics mate 8)

i used to be a poor mechanic,so i know how you feel ive only been working offshore for a year and a half and starting to make good money, most of the parts for my 5 are second hand, ebay is our best friend  most parts just need a clean or a paint to get that showroom effect,i aiso spend hours on the internet looking for bargains,it proves you can build a car on a shoe string budget :D

Been painting too long!

Beware of doing the prep work yourself, especially on a black car! Then again you have a fair few new panels so no filling to get straigt!

Title:
Post by: scratcher on 14:32, Sun 25 January 2009
Thats cool, getting all 3 ready  8)
I'm well looking forward to seeing your's finished. looks like a good spray job. Did you do it all your self?

My cars pretty much the same, just new boost pipes, filler flap. I even cleaned it last sunday to go Ace Cafe. I never feel inspired to go out to it in the cold. Oh, and I've got a set of black silicone hoses coming soon  :D
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 18:44, Sun 25 January 2009

Title:
Post by: scratcher on 16:05, Mon 26 January 2009
The paints come out brilliant mate. I'd love to have mine sprayed, the last 22 years haven't been too kind to it  :(
I've got a few plans ahead, I'm going to Disney Land tomorrow but when I get back at the weekend I'm going to give the underside a good clean and lick of paint. Still have the cossie cooler to plum in. And the lottery to win

Keep the pics rolling in of your car man, you got any more plans after getting this looking fresh again?
Title:
Post by: Ash-Lee on 16:30, Mon 26 January 2009

Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 08:24, Tue 27 January 2009

Post by: scratcher on 15:39, Sat 31 January 2009
Thats a good plan to get it legal and do bits as you go after that. That was my idea too but instead of doing jobs on it I'd end up going for a drive
I got back from Disney last night. It was a birthday present from my girlfriend  :D   And my new hoses were waiting when i got home.

What type of cage are you going for? I've wanted a full front and rear job for a while now.... may have to get saving.

Post by: bazr5gtt on 16:46, Sat 07 February 2009
cheers bud just seen yours aswell blue samcos rule  was suppose to move it today but my starters shagged and the scrappy aint got that old 5 that was there last week, gutted trying to get a hold of my mate so i can rob his one

not sure what its gonna put out yet its the bbpt yellow spec engine with stage 2 head,im unning the standard t2 turbo until its run in ive also got a t25 off a rover which is ready to fit except i need an oil feed union for it but ive also got a t28 from a nissan sunny pulser that needs a rebuild and the housings rotated so depending on how it all goes would be delighted with 250bhp if i can strech it that far

Baz...  what a difference a few weeks make!  Its out the garage  8)   how cool does ur engine bay look with those blue hoses!  good to see it out in the daylight...  what size wheels are they?  16's or 17's?   hats off to u getting it to this stage in record time mate!

I'd stick with the T2 turbo for a bit and ease it in like u said... my T25 feels less punchy than the T2...  I like the faster spool up myself!

looks pretty good m8y (the snow i mean hahaha only jokin i really do mean the car)

i have just swapped turbos this week to my t25 from a standard t2 and the t2 does spool up alot better plant your foot and its there but i like t25 better as your not on boost all the time i can now do 60-70mph without it being on boost all the time which is better for me

engine bay looks the dogs nuts   very blue and shiny (like mine lol)

hey gttboost, thanks mate just been flat out with it cant believe i actually drove it on sunday, still needs a lot of work yet but im gettin there, yeh i like my t2 its really done me proud i run it at 1 bar of boost with no problems before i done this rebuild and it seems fine no play at the shaft or nothing i will change it later but just want to get it all goin well

they are 16s mate with 195 40 16 profile tyres they actually measure the same as 195 50 15s which i ran before except you get a 16" rim which fills the arch nicely
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 01:31, Wed 11 February 2009
thanks r5gtt08,for your comments bud yeh gonna see what like with the turbos still gotta get the bitch moted and run the engine in,so plenty of time especially now im away offshore  never mind gives me time to sort out some new parts  theres nothing like blue silicone hoses and chrome
Title:
Post by: r5gtt08 on 07:19, Wed 11 February 2009
 yeah i no blue and chrome do go well together

and the turbos well to be honest if it i was only using my car for round the doors i think i would prefer the t2 but as i go all over the place the t25 is better turbo for my use

hope it all goes well on the mot m8y
Title:
Post by: Ash-Lee on 16:43, Wed 11 February 2009
Thats what i like about my T25, for normal driving and motorway driving i usually read a max of about 2psi.

But it goes when you want it to, a bit more hard work then with the T2 you have to keep it 'on the boil' but they pull a lot better higher up in the rev range.
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 21:53, Wed 11 February 2009
thanks ash,yeh everybody seems to like there t25s,like i say get it run in and then bugger about with the turbos, and then get her set up and see what we can get out of her
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 22:00, Wed 11 February 2009
hey r5gtt08,i see your bro has caught the silicone and chrome bug  yeh got to get an oil feed for my t25 like i said its a rover tomcat and the oil feeds are different to the 5s so have to sus it out,im not too worried about the mot,my mate from the garage i used to work at is doing it for me and i know ive got little crappy things to sort out but ill just put it through and get a list on it and work to it, ill have plenty of time to work on it when i get home :D
Title:
Post by: r5gtt08 on 22:39, Wed 11 February 2009
yeah i came accross that problem with the oil feed and luckily shaun bought one off ebay as a spare and it fitted the turbo sweet as fuck, so i bought it off him and turns out to be a k-tec one haha (i dont think he knows) but it works a treat

and you dont half get a kick once the turbo is in action

i have seen alot ov ppl call the tomcat turbo a peice of crap (sum ppl on here aswell)
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 01:13, Thu 12 February 2009
yeh im sure ill get one from some where, will be putting on my t25 once engine is run in,cant wait now :D yeh theres mixed feelings about the tom cat turbo, its a bit like marmite, luv it or hate it mate  i bought it as a cheap option to upgrade instead of paying £500-£600 for a new hybrid,

i will find out soon enough what like it is when i fit it,hopefully itll be alright on the night
Title:
Post by: Ash-Lee on 01:16, Thu 12 February 2009
There not necessarily crap but theres the issue of them already done a few thousand miles and also when the housings are rotated if there not put back together straight they can scrub the edges of the blades which causes them to get out of balence and they quickly fail.

My old one lasted 15'000miles + @18psi sometimes @ 20-22psi and it was given some stick.
Title:
Post by: r5gtt08 on 08:10, Thu 12 February 2009
see thats exactly what i mean its a cheap upgrade and they will last if you look after it and i do see what ya mean about some ov them have had a hard life and been round the world

i am keeping my eye out for a rover 620i now as its normally old men driving those so the turbo shud be in good condition
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 01:37, Sat 14 February 2009
yeh mines feels ok theres no play in the shaft, looks a good turbo, only paid £55 so if it breaks its no big deal
Title:
Post by: r5gtt08 on 09:35, Sat 14 February 2009
sounds good and tbh i am not one of these ppl to go out and spend £500 on a turbo when i know there is always a alternative

i have even found a shop on ebay that sells an adpter plate tu use the t3 turbo from an rs turbo/saph cossie and i know a few ppl with spare t3 turbo's lol
Title:
Post by: Bass J on 17:52, Sat 14 February 2009
im using the same turbo ...as for the oil feed i went to a hydraulic pipe place and they made up an oil feed for me for £20 ...just take in both ends ...inc turbo and they should be able to make one up for you ;)
Title:
Post by: Ash-Lee on 23:04, Sat 14 February 2009
Or go to your local Pirtek, they made me an adapter to fit the standard oil feed pipe to the turbo for £3.

Post by: 5-Mission on 23:10, Fri 27 March 2009
I've just been through this whole thread- took forever!! That's serious dedication for ya! Respect. My 5 doesn't need anywhere near as much work luckily but I am totally hampered for space which is a problem. My garage is only about 8'x15' or so, full of shite and has a chest freezer at the back covered in more shite and using valuable space!
Anyway you've done an amazing job and obviously earn a fair whack given the amount of cash you've thrown at it. I'm amazed you did jobs on it like replacing the rear wing - a looks like a massive job, removing all the sealant and breaking the spotwelds. Don't know if I'd wanna attempt it!
Are you sticking with the same front bumper or you gonna go for a funkier one? Keep at it!
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 21:53, Sat 28 March 2009
thanks mate, yeh it felt like it took forever to do but like you say just gotta just stick at it,i started building this car on a budget there are lots of second hand parts and some parts i got for birthdays and xmases, also ebay was my best friend   to date i have spent about 4 grand but thats new wheels and payin 500 for the car and 1200 for engine bits,i saved big style doin all the work myself, was a mechanic for11 years so it helped big style   at least youve got some where dry to work mate,im keeping this baby looking pretty much standard so will be keeping the standard bumper, and the bonnet is goin too, itll look pretty much standard apart from roll cage ,harnesses and wheels,a bit of a sleeper  whats the plans with your beast bud?
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 01:32, Mon 30 March 2009
lol, well I'd hardly call it a beast although it looks pretty cool when it's all together! Bought it in 2000 - it's a 5 GTX (5-door!) ...I know - I just like 'em for the easier back access and I've always liked the look of 5 doors (everyone who know me thinks this is seriously weird!) Anyway, I put the turbo kit on it & extended the arches 60mm, got aftermarket bumpers for it, lowered it 90mm all round on konis, put it in for a repspray in a Bentley colour (blue with a red flip) and had the doors and bootlid flushed while it was in there.
So really it was all show and no go, lol. That said it was reasonable when it running at it's peak on 13's probably not that much slower than a standard phase 1 turbo.
Anyway, the head gasket went on it (twice) :(  :x  I've got a doner engine but it's still in another car so currently it's up in the air on axle stands (super tall ones) with the subframe and rear axle off. I've recently started cutting out the rust on the chassis rails and sills  but progress is slow and I've gotta hire a welder and buy more tolls and stuff especially mini cutting discs, dremels etc!
And the lack of space is a right pain in the arse! I've gotta got the wheels back on it to get it back down to move it across the garage to do the sill on 1 side as it's almost tight against the wall!
I'd like to get an F7R lump in it one day! Yeah right. :?
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 16:56, Mon 30 March 2009
cool bud you will have to post up some pictures of your progress, its  a pain in the butt having a small garage my council lock up is the same, hey it all takes time better not to rush it and get it to the way you want mate
Title:
Post by: GTTboost on 19:04, Mon 30 March 2009
so whats happening next Baz?   knowing how handy u are with ur work... I can see you adding another turbo on soon!  ;)
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 21:49, Mon 30 March 2009
lol, well my interest wanes sometimes and I've hardly done anything to it. It's been off the road since Jan 2002 and in my current garage since May 2004 I'm embarassed to say. I have started on it again recently though, as I said it's currently totally stripped exterior wise - lump out, kit off, axles and subframe off etc but the lack of space is a proper headf%ck!!
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 21:52, Mon 30 March 2009
lol, the only photos I've got of it are black and bloody white taken on a disposable camera which I mistakenly picked up as a colour one!
I'll have to work on getting a couple scanned and upped on here!
Title:

hey gttboost gonna get my brakes sorted this week, few odds and sodds then get her moted, got lights to sort aswell :D

Post by: bazr5gtt on 18:02, Tue 31 March 2009
hey 5mission thats a shame i take all my photos with my mobile phone then put it onto nokia suite on my laptop then onto photo bucket then on to here
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 21:54, Tue 31 March 2009
Loads of steps to get them on! I did install the software once to do that. I've got a Sony Ericsson but it's quite a low-res phone and the car's not worth photographing at the moment anyway trust me!
TBH it needs moving to a larger workshop unless I can move the car into the middle of the garage which is difficult while it's 4ft up in the air!
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 22:01, Tue 31 March 2009
im usedto it bud,i suppose my phones gota 5 mega pixel so its just like digital camera, hey bud yer cars a 5 so its well worth photographing, its good cos people can help with parts of yer build i can see your progress :D
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 22:47, Wed 01 April 2009
I'm surprised the sheer amount you stripped your 5 down - complete front end inc. headlight apertures and the rear wing! How did you cut your plates to patch holes up etc.. with tin snips? It's be useful to work where there was a guillotine I suppose!
Something else I need is one of those little cutting tools - has a little disc mounted sideways on the end - don't know what they're called though. Slitting discs on a grinder cut too large an area at once! I could always weld the excess slits up though I suppose!
I'd seriously love to get this back on the road but there's so much work involved!
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 23:00, Wed 01 April 2009
That said if I don't do it it'll sit there forever and is impractical for moving house & f&ck giving it away as a freebie to the next buyer of my house - I'd better get on with it!
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 09:44, Thu 02 April 2009
hey 5mission it had to be done mate it was either fix it or fuck it and i dont give up easily  yeh i used proffesional tin snips you get left handed and right handed ones with rubber handles dont use that crappy straight handled ones that look old fashioned, the pro ones can cut round corners if you look carefully in one of the photos you can see them on the floor of the car there snap on and exspensive but they pay for themselves, its a shame i stay so far away or i could have have popped round and gave you a hand bud :D
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 09:46, Thu 02 April 2009
dont try and rush it all at once concentrate on one thing ata  time make parts list and set a goal on what your gonna achieve that day,and ill tell you the 5 will come together nicely  needin any advice give me a shout bud
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 10:13, Thu 02 April 2009
No worries - thanks. I know the snips you mean - they have a bit of a lever mechanism on them. lol - yeah some help sometimes would be appreciated! I had fun and games getting the rear axle of let me tell ya! Had to tie it up through the holes in the chassis rails and put a short set of steps underneath with an old double din stereo on top to make up the height then gently lower it down. They weigh some those axles!
I think I'm lucky in that my whole floorpan seems intact with no rust but the o/s/f corner in from the sill behind the inner wing needs replacing and someone's tried doing it in the past - badly. I'm gonna get in there today and do a bit.

hey bud no problem you got a few big welding jobs on there mate  yeh its a nightmare with no space especially when welding but it looks like youll handle it no problem bud best of luck keep me posted  8) i went shopping today at my local scrappy some idiot had scrapped a 5 turbo so i went over and relieved it of some parts ive been needing for ages and it only cost me a tenner happy days
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 00:27, Mon 06 April 2009
lol - definitely an idiot! Obviously didn't realise the resale value of all the parts! That said, someone has put a shedload of 5 Turbo bits up on ebay - absolutely tons of stuff - interiors, axles, lights, bodykit parts, bootlids, turbos, electrics etc - all as 1 job lot for one luck punter to go and pick up!
They're in Liverpool so it's too far for me - as if I've got any room as it is!

I know - I did kind of think it took the piss a bit! I won't mention my car in this thread again after this post. I think it'd make a fairly crap thread though - you'd all be like yeaaahh come on do some work and update us!! when in reality I don't really do shit on it so what I've posted in this thread is about all you'll see as the car is unlikely to change.
Sad but true. I do love the car and it owes me a lot of money but times are hard and equipment and space especially are really making life hard regarding renovating it.
I was surprised how easy it was to up pictures on here though - if I get on and make a bit of progress I'll start a thread up and let you all know what's happening..

Deff keep us posted on ur 5..  only reason I mentioned it is that nobody would have seen your car in here and its cool to see another 5 on the forum 'in the making!'     its easy to type on here and it comes accross the wrong way.  New projects are cool to watch make progress  8) even if it does take ages..   mine stared 4 years ago...and still going.. but not quite as major as lots of the ones here.

The worst thing about these cars is starting them... after u start...  u never stop....  its like something else can always be done..  I think for me ....I get a vision on what I want it to be like...  but the prob is... after that vision is sorted....another new vision comes along!  I dont want any more visions.

Couldnt you get a donor car and just swap the parts over onto yours?  I', blown away by how much work Baz has done on his to get it where it is today...  but pretty inspiring to the guys like yourself to show how it can be all done  8)

That sounds cool baz.. would be interested to see this..   cheers.

cheers 5 mission you got any more done bud :D

Not really.     I've gotta put the subframe and rear axle and wheels back on, drop it down and move it across into the middle of the garage if I'm ever gonna replace the o/s sills! It's not a job I'm looking forward to TBH! I take it you cut them off then grind back any spotwelds until it's all flat before derusting and fitting the new 1's? I've gotta replace the inner sill as well on that side.
So apart from a mig welder and a set of snips, I need a 180mm axle bolt as I had to cut 1 of mine off removinf the axle - can anyone help me out?!
Maybe I should post in the classified/wanted section? :?:
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 21:55, Tue 14 April 2009
hey 5 mission yeh mate jst cut  off the sill and buff away the spot welds and one layer of metal then the sill will sit in an original position,i also swedged the exsisting panels so they all sat flush much neater finish,im not to sure where to get inner sills from i just made my own from sheet metal cos there flat anyway  and itll save you some cash cos you dont see the inners anyway bud,i would give bob at cgb motorsport a call there really good with bolts and things like that or even try your local reno dealer they still do a lot of things like that mate
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 22:54, Tue 14 April 2009
Yeah I gathered they might've been pretty easy to knock up yourself (those inner sills). Being flat and all that. I read that alignment is very important and you need to look at your door shut gaps when positioning the sills prior to spotting in place! Also the car is quite a lot structurally weaker while they're off anyway I will give this a go probably Thursday.
The only thing is moving the car over then getting it back up, axle and subframe off again and getting the car back up in the air then cutting the sill(s) off. I don't fancy it being up in the air like that though. I think if I'm gonna cut the old sills off I should aim to fit new ones the same day - means buying an outer 1st anyway!
Shame I can't do anything tomorrow - gotta go out all day Wednesday's gonna be a warm 1 as well apparently?!  8)
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 14:15, Wed 15 April 2009
just do one side at a time like you say when you cut out metal the shell weakens so just jack one side up and concentrate on that side until its all welded   then swap over mate, well thats been 2 days here of fog and dullness i wish the sun would come out
Title:
Post by: 5-Mission on 22:49, Wed 15 April 2009
The weather forecast did say it'd be a bit crap up north and warm down south. It's gonna be coller again tomorrow in the South so I don't know what you've got in store?!
Do you think it'll be safe up in the air on axle stands with no inner or outer sills on 1 side?! :?  :?:

hey mate yes its been dodgy since i bought the car 6 years ago i decided to pull it outta the box and ended up snapping half of it in the gearbox at the time i didnt have a replacement but just bought one last week so now im gonna have to drill it out to fit the new one bit of a bummer cos im gonna have to remove the driveshaft to get into it
Title: Re: my 5 before restoration!!!
Post by: 5-Mission on 19:07, Thu 22 October 2009
Hey Baz, how you doing? Well done for getting the car sorted and back on the road! 8)  Just read your bit above about snapping the gearbox end of your speedo cable - how exactly DO they come out?!
I think I knackered the end of mine when I took the 5 engine out and I wasn't gonna do the same when I took the engine out of my 9 recently so I unplugged the other end from the dash, cut the grommet out and pulled it out of the bulkhead still attached to the 'box!

Apparently there's a clip you have to remove then they pull straight out but I've heard they're still impossible even then. Then you pull really hard and they come our broken?!    :x

hey 5 mission,im doin fine mate, what about yourself? glad to hear you got your 5 back on the road mate last time i heard you had a mountain of welding to do,yeh mate its been dodgy since i bought the car,all thats suppose to hold it in is a bracket and an allen bolt, and its suppose to just pull out, only problem is its been in for 20 years   so now i cant get a hold of the end cos its snapped into the box,so im just gonna have to drill the remainder out to fit the new one,i did excatly the same mate when i had the engine and box out, just left it in should have done it really ah well just have to get on with it i suppose

Hi Baz, lol I wish it was back on the road! It's still up on axle stands at the moment... still got masses of work to do, not done any welding but I have cut and shaped all the panels. The one major panel I'm not looking forward to is the o/s sill.
Could be an inner sill as well. I ripped all the sealant out at the back and shone a torch inside and someone's partially cut the original sill and welded another over the top which has also succumbed to the old worm.
I fixed the gasless mig (a wire had come off inside the gun), but apparently they're no good for overhead welding which is 80% of the job!    :|

hey bud thats a shame mate, well stick at it and youll get through it in know time  i dont like gassles welders anyway, there just no good for repairing body work, sell it and get a cheap gas mig and youll fly through yer panel work,

im sure youll manage the sill no probs once you cut off all the old ones its easy enough mate, keep me posted bud

Gasless welders are a nightmare. I have one of those welders that can work with/without gas.

Brought some wire that doesn't require gas the once, it was shocking. Tryed as best i could but it was messy i couldn't get it to 'penetrate' good enough at all.

Good luck on your carb build dude. I had loads of fun doing mine, so much fun that I got another carb and gasket kit to do one evening   The car starts much better now too, which is nice  :D

Warm vinegar is very good for cleaning the carb up. Strip it down and leave it in there for about 10-15 minutes (Thanks to Sparkie for his vinegar tips   )

I wouldnt use cellulose bud its cheap and crap :!: I did the inside and engine bay with the stuff and it comes out very flat which you then have to polish the fuk out of to get it to shine. The outsides been done in solid 2k, and ive redone the dash and drivers inner wing with the stuff to.

The old saying you get what you pay for is very true, £40 for 5ltrs cellulose and £40 for 1 ltr 2k.
Id give it a go though fella.
Title: Re: my 5 before restoration!!!
Post by: bazr5gtt on 00:57, Fri 06 May 2011
spot on bud,ill defo give 2 pack a blast instead then, stay away from that cellulose i think,im keeping it black aswell so need the best possible finish i can get,2k will still need a wee polish after its hardened though will it?
Title: Re: my 5 before restoration!!!
Post by: nadgtt1982 on 10:56, Fri 06 May 2011
It depends on what your finish is like, my painting is as consistent as newcastle are at winning games  , sometimes its spot on and other times i need to flat it back and polish it up, also it depends on how spot on you want the finish.

If your happy with a little orange peel then just leave it, even brand new cars have orange peel in the paint, im only a diy painter at best but i think black is the worst colour to do   so you've got your work cut out, but if you say your doing your mates at least it will give you an idea of what it takes. :D  remember to put pics up tho

thanks bud ,yeh ill see how his turns out first then decide what route im gonna take,i had to have the worst colour in the world   everything is gonna have to be flat and straight or it will look a mess, dont worry mate im a big fan of photos so there will not be a shortage of them once i get going

well removed front windscreen and both doors on my pals white 5 ,seized door pins fun and games ,but didnt manage to get the screen out in a oner, and cleaned and buffed up my carb, ready for its rebuild, think i have the 5 bug again  time to finish the 5 ,photos to follow

I've got a white one thats on the road and a silver one thats getting alot of work done to it.

When did you last have your 5 on the road? i've not seen one going about here for ages the last one i seen was a tungsten grey parked up in langstracht
Title: Re: my 5 before restoration!!!

carb is looking good and way to clean  :D

did you drill out the needle jet yourself or did you buy one from german ebay?

I am interested in seeing if you had drilled it, as I have read in a few articles that is a little awkward for it to seal properly after drilling..... so I was going to be lazy and just buy one

hey dan cool mate i havent seen you goin around unless its the white pearl? mines has been garaged for about a year and a half ,somebody tried to steal it and bent the drivers door open so looking for a mint one, managed to get a passenger of a prima absolutely perfecto so looking for somethig the same,

yes that tungy is my pals i just stay at the bottom of the langstracht too,my other pal has one too just 100 yards fom where the tungy sat,his bro owns a black pulser its sitting in the garden cant miss it

have to geta swatch at yer motors bud ,do you use it as a daily driver ?

also theres a blue one kicking about aswell sounds pretty quick aswell see it a few times
Title: Re: my 5 before restoration!!!
Post by: bazr5gtt on 23:17, Thu 14 July 2011
hey phase 2 tungy, cheers mate ,i know had a we got with the buff ,will go with the chrome under the bonnet

yes i did drill the standard one from 1.7 to 1.9,i cleaned it out and then check for it sealing there was a small leak so all i did was turn it over and gave it a tap until it sealed as the needle is brass too and it worked no problem ,not sure if i would be so lucky if i had to drill it to 2.0mm,

the second stage drilled no problem either thank good ,didnt want to damage it or drill too much either,so once i get back from offshore im gonna get it on and see what its like, ive got a t28 to go on to in the procees of putting it back together ,and then get her set up and see what the figures are

Hoping to do a HND in the next couple of years, not too sure what to go for though     Loving all the work on your r5, im currently sorting the body work out on mine, hoping to get it done by this year, slowly crossing things off the list
