Hey folks
Just adding a few pics of my cars and how I came to have them.
I have owned 3 renault 5 GTT's. Love the cars.. Spend most of my free time maintaining them and trying to improve them. My first R5 was a 1986 PH1 model which I bought in 1998. When I got it it was a wreck. I just worked at it as a hobby. Got it into reasonable shape before I decided to sell it to make way for a P1 Impreza. Regret ever selling it to be honest as I spent so much time and effort on it. It was pearlescent white with white plastic bumpers and I got it all resprayed in glacier white. A guy drove all the way from waterford in the south of ireland to buy it. I never heard another thing about the car. The pic is on the day it was sold.
I then purchased a grey ph2 model. It is the car I now concentrate all my time on. I have had it since 2002 and it is in very good shape. I mainly concentrate on the engine as I am not really into bodykits and big wheels etc. I am currently running an engine in for this car and hope to get it set up properly and then maybe take it to the rolling road to see what its got.

In 2005 I also bought a mates R5 as It was to good a one to let slip away. It was a pearlesect white Ph2 model. He was only the second owner. Due to knowing the treatment the car got and how particular the guy was I cudnt let it pass me.. The car is very close to original. It has a full service history. Since he has purchased the car in 1997 from a mature owner he has maintained it religiously with mobil 1 oil an has every service logged. I have very rarely driven this car at all and have only added about 500 miles to it since i have bought it. I want to spend some time on it and return it to its totally standard state as it is to good a car to be molested.

Anyway thats my story
Hope you all get as much enjoyment out of your cars as I get out of mine. :D
-
both your cars are sweet! im looking for a new 5 at the mo, want a grey one but that white one has made me think again!
is that a mk2 cav in the corner of the 1st pic?
-
Really nice cars. The white one is in great condition.

You have a keen eye lol
It is yes, its a Mk2 SRI 130 Calibre. I have a mate who is into them in a big way. He has about 5 of them at the minute. Most of them are genuine Calibres too. Not just kitted out mk2's.
Goodluck in the search lad.
-
Would kill for any of those two cars. Couldn't be better combination. One with massive spec and one "from factory" :)
-
Great cars, both of them! Respect!
-
Got a digi cam for christmas so decided to try it out. Have the LC-1 fitted now and seems to be working ok. Just waiting for the good weather now to get the car back out again to check the fuelling. Managed to get a pillar guage pod sorted for the car too.

I have been looking at ways of improving the air flow through the original bumper. I have got a monte carlo front grille for the car and am thinking of maybe cutting some shapes out of the front bumper as well to aid the cooling. I have seen circles cut out with a hole cutter before but was thinking of more the same idea as the turbo2 cars. They have rectangle inlets on the front bumper. I think it would mabe look a bit more tidy. Was wondering has anyone ever seen it done with rectangle cutouts before?
Anyway the plan is to get the new grille painted up in the next few months and also get the front bumper resprayed due to stone chips.
It never ends lol......
-
Do love the tungy such a good looking car.
-
Think that triangle shaped holes would suit GTT better. I saw few older cars with it (Opels) and it really looks good on them.
My suggestion is to cut fins between foglights, remove foglights and make holes above license plate from side indicator to another side indicator
Some of the members here said "it would suck like a dutch pro" :)
-
There isnt much point me cutting the fins away from between the fog lights because I had to raise the radiator up slightly due to fitting the larger fan. So now the bottom fins only really direct air to the oil cooler.
Jure have you got any pics of them cars with the traingle cut outs? Would like to see what it looks like
cheers

Great 5's you have there! The Pearl is such a rare car expecially in that condition! (one of THE VERY BEST I have ever seen in this condition!) 8) Well done with buying it and making it a future faultless example. (I like the way you have 1 5gtt to play around with and modify and one to have as a super original example as it left the factory) 8)
Thats a huge old rad you have there... I have the smaller alloy pace rad... and makes mine look like a match box! :D shame you cant still fit the air filter cone along side to suck in the cold air directly from the front grill area... but the charge cooler must be keeping things nicely cooled 8) thats a nioe spec you have there. I have the same turbo (BBT25) how much differnce did you find the performance cam made with that turbo?
Are you having cooling issues? If not... I wouldnt cut any extra holes.

Thanks for the comments
I havnt really had the car out yet to see if the cam makes much difference. I had just run the engine in there before I put the car away for the winter :(
I should be getting it on the road for the start of april and will see how it goes from there. I will prob have to play around with the fueling a bit to get it running right.
I had problems with it running hot before I cut the front grille. It even started to get hot with the large rad. I just took off the front grille one day and it made a massive difference hence the cut down version.. I was thinking of improving it more by cutting some openings in the top of the front bumper as it really does restrict the air flow a lot. I havnt done it yet as i would like to keep it as standard looking as possible.. I may look at doing it again if I have anymore problems.
As for the white car I am aiming to get it MOT'd and start getting it back to full original spec. That should keep me outa troble for a while :D
-
Hope you get the cooling sorted out ok.. with all the work you've done to improve the cooling its a strange one! :? would be a shame to cut the bumper... but if its going to help.. sounds like it might be worth doing.. and bumpers are pretty easy to get hold of still (I bought a new unpainted one a while ago just incase I ever need it and stored it).
Keep us posted mate.. also with the white one! 8)
-
Got a lend of a Jigsaw for the weekend.. The car should be able to breathe a bit better now :D
Just have to get the cutouts tidied up a bit now. Get a good straight edge to leave it right. I will put some mesh behind them and get it down to the paint shop..
Am trying to decide whether the mesh in the bumper should be painted grey or leave it silver like the mesh I am puttin on the grille.. what you reckon I should do guys?.... :?

Lovin the car mate... look forward to seeing it with the mesh...think that will make it look tasty! 8) Talking of weather... we just had hail stones the size of golf balls coming down on us... thank fook my car is in the garage... would have smashed the roof up! lol.
(just noticed... is the mesh on in that bottom pic? its hard to tell from that angle? Oh... that was before u cut the bumper... I need some glasses! lol)
Keep us posted 8)

Looking good matey.

Finally I have the 5 out on the road :D :D :D

Lovely looking cars mate. :D

Cheers for the comments guys
Been a few more changes lately. I have to wait ages for the paintshop to take the car so am fiddling about with other things..
Got a down pipe from Boris on the RTOC (well worth joining by the way). Seems a good job. Only probem is the 2 1/4" exhast I have on the car wont mate with it so I have had to resurrect an old 2 1/2" one I had stored away in the shed. Been busy trying to get it tidied and onto the car.. Couldnt believe the amount of stuff I had hoarded away lol.. Handy to have anyway.. It will be 2 1/2" all the way from the turbo now.. Just have to try and get it mounted with out it rattling .. not an easy thing to do with it being so low :(
(http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc240/h150gtt/downpipe2.jpg)
-
That looks very nice! 8) and with the 2.5" all the way through will be even better :D
I was wondering if you can help with a few ques..
1. When you fitted the charge cooler was it a noticable increase in performance?
2. Do you find your group a carb over fuels? does it drink like Oliver Read even when off boost?
How much boost are you running?
Thanks!! nice work with your latest add on! 8)
-
The biggest difference I have noticed so far was fitting the Cam.. It really pulls up the revs now. I am only running 12 psi boost at the minute as I am waitin on a carb rebuild kit to refit a standard venturi carb.
The grp A is ok if your driving it flatout all the time but a bit of a pain for normal driving. It hesitates a bit and runs rich off boost. My afr's at the min are low 13's when idling, 10 - 12 when off boost normal driving and at WOT 11.8 - 12.2..
I personally wouldnt bother with the grp a carb.. From what I have read about them no one seems to be fussed on them..
The charge cooler seems to work ok. I only had a forge alloy intercooler before. Performance wise I dont think I noticed that big of a difference tho on the rolling road with the standard engine, grp A carb and chargecooler it made approx 10hp more at 15psi of boost than running a standard airbox and forge intercooler.. Not sure if the carb made the difference or the chargecooler..
Sorry for the essay...

Cheers for the hep.. very useful info.. I had decided against the group a carb for the same reasons u mentioned, I just wasnt sure if i had just heard a few bad reports and most of the time they ran without any probs. But hearing your info really helps clear things up on that side :D
:)

Well I have finally made a start with the white car. Just serviced it there this morning and got the std rims back from being refurbished :D
Nice and clean.. Just need to get a new set of tyres now.
Will have to get it booked in for an MOT and see where to go from there..
Have a few bits that need sorted in the engine bay but not very much.
Will hopefully have it out for a spin by the end of the summer.

Got the grey car on the rolling road last sunday...
The car managed 165bhp @wheels and 160 lb ft torque
Their dyno worked that out to be 194bhp at the fly.
Not sure how accurate that flywheel figure would be tho.
Was a good days fun.. A TVR and a 550 bhp EVO 5 turned up..

only noticing your thread now mate...fecking nice
is that white phase 2 the other one that belonged to kidd???
and is it for sale?
-
Cheers lad
Na Kidd never had that one.. An old couple in lisburn bought it new and then my mate bought it from them. It was the first 5 I was ever in..
It isnt for sale mate sorry.. Dont think I could part with it to be honest. I have it stored away in a carcoon bubble. Plan to show it eventually, just need to get my house all sorted first so I can spend the time an money on it.
You have your hands full anyway with the raider and that saxo!!!
-
lovin both the motors mate but id have stuck with the standard speedlines on the tungy....still looks the dogs as it is but the standard look always looks better, just my taste maybe and dalm that polish up looks class what did you use???
-

Yea I love the look of the speedlines on it too but traction is a bit of a problem. Sort of thought there was no point spending all the time and money on the engine and just sitting at the lights spinning :( Plus I am thinking of fitting the bigger disk conversion at some stage..
For the shine I polished it with autoglym super resin polish. Done it 3 times and buffed it up.
Then the next time I washed the car I used the autoglym autogloss rinse and gave it a chamois. Thats when I took the pic.. I always think it looks better the next time you wash the car after you have polished it?? :? .. Its probably all in me head tho...
-
il have to give the polish a good it looks the business, cars in the garage at the min getting the head gasket sorted hopefully be the end of my problems with it lol i wish
-
Autoglym SRP is brilliant, so easy to use by hand as well.
It contains a lot of fillers which help to mask any swirl marks and light scratchs, whatever i might have in my car cleaning cupboard theres always a tub of that stuff in there.

Got myself into gear to start working at the car again.
Decided to ditch the Pace charge cooler for a FMIC.
Got a universal intercooler and some hoses of ebay.
Followed the instructions in the DIY section and it worked out pretty well. (Cheers guys!!)
Have to order up some bits and pieces but nothing major and then just tidy it up.
Pics so far

Only have intercooler fitted and now suffering from carb freeze.. Had to get duct tape out and block the air flow through the bumper... tidy lol
Roll on the summer evenings!!
-
Just a little update
Fitted a side exit to the car today. It is a Ktec type. Finding it very loud inside the car but I guess thats just the way of them.. No rattles on the back axle which was really nice..
Have also purchased a full set of Koni's and a large brake disc conversion. So I will have a few busy evenings to get everything put onto the car. Will need to get a polybush kit sorted before I fit the suspension..
Next up I hope to get some extra gauges fitted. Fancy the SPA dual gauges but they are pretty steep price
-
i fanciede a side exit myself mate, what did you do about the rear bumper cut out?
-
i fanciede a side exit myself mate, what did you do about the rear bumper cut out?
Havnt touched it yet lad. Am in 2 minds what to do with it. I might just leave it alone incase I do decide to go back to a rear exit again.. Will maybe make something up to take the bare look off it just..
-
Little bit more of an update..
I purchased some Koni's, Poly bushes, New wishbones, Large brake disc's and extender brackets, braided hoses and Ferrodo racing pads.
Had to get a mate to give me a hand fit it all onto the car lol..
Am really happy with the car now. The steering is far more responsive and the upgraded brakes give you that little bit more confidence.
Took some snaps
Koni's before painting.
Koni's painted and fitted along with the other parts.
Had some trouble fitting the wheels back on and ended up having to fit 5mm spacers and grind away the face of the brake caliper slightly to clear the spokes on the wheels.
Side exit

Apart from that i have just been out enjoying the car and the good weather.
Thats all I have to report
Hope everyone is enjoying their cars!

It was a DIY job...
I aint great at spraying but took my time and was careful. They didnt turn out to bad..
You wouldnt see the runs from your house
-
Lol well good job mate, what paints did you get prima yellow paint and gloss? Mite have a go at mine before they get fitted on thursday
-
I got them shot blasted in work. I had to put a load of tape on the rods to protect them.
Then I just used grey primer from Halfords.
The yellow paint is what we use on our mixers in work.
Its slightly darker than koni yellow but It was close enough for me..
Aye have a go at it.. Its nice to be able to say you did it yourself...
-
Yeh your rite mate! Well I'm goin to have to sand mine down or something lol, but il give it a go! Nice job tho mate

Made a few changes to the car tonite.
I got fed up listening to the drone of the side exit so I took it off again. Really nice having the old burble sound back again from the rear exit. (but also the not so nice odd rattle)
Also got my self a new carb. Its meant to be one of a batch of brand new carbs which were sold by KTEC a few years back. It was supposidily fitted to a project car which never seen the light of day and was broken for spares. Havnt got it fitted yet but will hopefully get it sorted in the next few evenings and see how it goes.
Have a rolling road day on sunday so I will hopefully get it going right by then..
Time to get the micro drill bits out again

Yea the Koni's made a real big difference. The roads over here are pretty rough as they like to dig the same stretch of road up about 10 times a year to lay cables, pipes, etc. Sometimes I think they just dig it up for something to be at!!!
The koni's are pretty good tho, they arnt really hard so the ride isnt to harsh.
I might be needing your advice again Steve regarding the carb jetting if I get stuck, Hope you dont mind me pestering you

No probs :)
Reminds me I need some koni's myself

A wee update
Managed to get the new carb going pretty well. I got the boost up to 22 psi and decided to leave it there for the rolling road day..
It managed 209 bhp. Was happy with that result as it was the same rolling road as the last time which it did 194bhp @ 20 psi..
Will get my tdc sensor modified to make it ajustable and maybe try and go a bit further.. Not sure how much more my carb can do before I start to suffer fuel supply problems tho..
Have been looking for other ways to supply the carb with extra fuel but not sure what way is best yet.. Anyone had any experience with this :?:

Got the white 5 through MOT there today at first attempt. Been talking about doing it for years..
The last time it was done was in 2005!!!
Cudnt believe it had been that long..
Everything seems to be working as it should, even the oil level and oil pressure!! for now

Its near enuff standard lad..
Has a scorpion exhaust and a boost controller and lowered.
It used to have a dump valve but its off it now and a set of standard uncut boost hoses fitted..
