Title: Time for a rebuild?

Hello all,

I am not a frequent poster on the forum, but after a little bit of advice pleeeeaaassseeee.....  

Could be a sad time for my R5 Turbo.

A crack in the rad about 6 months ago, obviously made me put a new one on.  Car didn't overheat.  As the summer is coming I am putting her back on the road, but now there is a leak from the head out the side of the head.  Looks the sealant has split.  Would people think that the head has cracked?

I know very little about the R5 a part from the work I have done on her over the last 3 years....  It's an H reg by the way....

Any suggestions, positive or otherwise?

When you say leak from the side of the head do you mean were the blanking plate is or the water pump end?? get a pic of it up matey I will see if I can help you out

I will try and get a picture tomorrow, but on the right hand side of the block as you face car. Think that is where the blanking plate is...

There is a blanking plate there, six bolts hold it on IIRC.

You might be lucky and it just needs a new gasket (or sealant works just as well to be honest...) but be carefull with the bolts though, the threads have a nasty habit of messing up.

It is that area and I picked some old sealant off around the leak. Will have a look tomorrow. Thanks for the advice. Lets hope. :)

Im a little unsure how to put a picture on here, but I can confirm that it is the blanking plate side of the engine.  Therefore do we think that it could just be the gasket?
What is this gasket called, so that I can get another one.  Thanks Again....

For a quick fix (...or a more permanent one in my case  :lol: ) silicone sealant works just as well.

 :lol: Will only take you a few mins make sure you clean bot the plate and head surface up to make sure nothing interfers with the mating surfaces

Although, not 100% relevant to my posts above, could someone have a look at these photos

There are three on here, if I have uploaded correctly, and tell me what the circular part is.  Its all located by the back of the block, below the carb.

It looks like your pointing at the inlet manifold?

There are identical circles at each end of the inlet manifold. They don't do anything as far as I know, I think there just cast that way or they might be plugged. There is coolant flowing through the inlet manifold if you still use the standard setup.

Would it therefore be fair to say, that if water is leaking from here, then this is not a good sign then?

They must be plugged there then.

You don't 'need' the coolant running through there, I personally haven't got the coolant running through the inlet manifold.

You could either attempt to re seal the plug, replace the inlet manifold or just bypass the coolant.

At least this does not seem as bad as I thought.

I will see if I can find a bung (sure the original one must be somewhere)

Failing that is there a guide on redirecting the cooling?  What are the pros and cons of this?

new manifold core plugs are 2.50 each from CGB, you should be able to get a full manifold for less than 30. pain in the arse to fit, as the carb has to come off tho..

Yeah, I did have a look, and does look a bit of a mission.  

Unless anyone can tell me how to bypass this, as previously mentioned could be done, then I will get the bung....

Do these plugs just push in with a bit of sealant around them?

It's very easy to bypass the cooling, but I might of forgot the original setup.  :oops:

You should have the following pipework if I remember correctly.

Water pump to Carb base > Carb base to inlet manifold > inlet manifold back to water pump.

What you want to do is remove the carb base to inlet manifold pipe, then the inlet manifold back to water pump pipe needs to be removed and attached to the now open port on the carb base.

Hopefully that makes sense, this way you still have the coolant flowing around the base of the carb (needed for winter mornings IMO) with the inlet manifold completely disconnected.
