avoiding it no, but my lil bro had a similar situation and he rang the credit department of vodafone and they agreed that he could pay it off in installments and still remain connected and it wouldnt affect his credit rating either!
i think he owed somthing like 540 and he paid it back at 40 a month ok he ended up paying them about 610 but still got it sorted!

This is the trouble with smartphones, even more so with ones stuffed full of apps that like to update every 5 minutes.

I turn off mobile data on my handset and just use WiFi. If i absolutley need to access something while i'm out on the road i will manually turn on mobile data to avoid flying over any monthly allowances and being hit with hidden charges etc.

I suppose best you can do is ring up your carrier, and grovel. Explain you might of been a bit of a numpty and didn't know anything about roaming etc. Say the kids wont eat for a week and the washing machines just blown up. etc etc. Or as above explain your situation and offer to pay across installments.

Post your issue over at Money Saving Expert website. The link below should take you straight to the mobile section of the website.

Hopefully you might get more help from people there. I went on there many moons ago when Scottish Power were taking the piss and charging me twice for my electric bill.
