That is a nice set up !!!

With regards to the OE air filter that is exactly what i have done. I've removed the second air inlet / outlet on the back of the filter housing and blocked the internal section of it off so its a direct cold ram air feed straight to the filter.

Cheers.

Didnt want to start the bodywork till spring due to the bad winters we have up here.

If you look closely at the pic of the engine you can see the "green filter", which was originally fitted about 10mm from the turbo. There wasnt even a heatshield covering the turbo and it had started to burn the wire element of the unit. It was literally sucking in hot air.

The last pic of the engine is the final set up with the new heatshield and standard airbox ( just waiting for the cold air feed pipe from ebay )

As many of you are aware I bought this 99% completely standard car last month with the intention of restoring it back to its former glory.

I've been looking for a standard one at the right price for sometime so when this one popped up for sale in the classifieds one Friday night i went over to see it and ended up driving it back home. The only mods were a badly set up bleed valve, green filter and a back box.

My main objective is to get the car mechanically perfect ( ie - make sure everything works as it should ) So the first job was to remove the turbo and check it for signs of wear and tear. After removal i noticed the wastegate housing was quite badly cracked so i replaced the unit with a BTN service exchange unit for the time being ( superb quality ) and refitted the unit with new gaskets and seals. When i bought the car i noticed the vac pipes had been removed and incorrectly refitted so i fabricated new pipes and connectors and returned the pipework to standard manufacturers spec.

Whilst the turbo was off i also fitted a new radiator ( 7701414002 ) to improve cooling. A little re-wiring was required as the original loom was looking a little tired.

A new ex manifold / turbo heatshield ( 6001009529 ) was ordered from Renault and fitted. The perculation fan had burnt out upon inspection so i replaced this with a good working second hand unit along with a new perc fan sensor and carb sensor + fabricated a new loom with connectors. All working fine now.

The cooling system was then flushed and replenished with new coolant and the engine oil was also drained and replenished with new oil + a genuine Renault filter. A new fuel filter was also fitted.

The 3" rear back box was also removed and fitted with a new standard Genuine Renault unit ( 7700436453 ) the rest of the section was re-aligned and fitted with new rubber mounts ( 7700779356 )

I then set about rejetting the 2nd stage jet in the solex 32 dis carb to improve fueling at high boost ( many thanks to all concerned for your help ) this seems to have worked quite well.

Once this was done i fitted new plugs, new distributor cap, new rotar arm and plug leads. The "Green" air filter which had been fitted withought much thought, has now been removed and a standard Renault set up fitted ( just waiting for the top pipe off ebay )

The engine is running a hell of a lot better now - just needs setting up on the rollers / wideband.

Next job is running gear ( brakes / wheel bearings / suspension ) and next year the car is going in for a full repaint.

I've fitted a pace intercooler which seems to be doing the trick.

Whats your recommendations on the air filter. It did have a green filter fitted but ive removed it as it was right next to the Turbo ( sucking in hot air ) and there didnt seem to be a decent cold air feed to supply it with o2. The previous owner had also removed the turbo / exhaust manifold heat shield so the green filter was about 10mm from the turbo.

Ive fitted a new heat shield from Renault ( yes they are still available - part no 6001009529 ) and ive refitted the standard air box with cold air feed - it seems a lot better.

Ok - thanks for your help

Just a quickie ...... with the 2nd boost gauge plumbed into the carb base and AEI unit will max boost for a standard T2 show on the gauge at 12psi or 16 psi ?

This does sound like the OE boost hoses overboost sensor cutting in, personally I would just take the wiires out of the sensor and tie them up out of the way.  Also have you got a wideband kit to see what the fueling is like yet??

This is what i thought as the problem only occurs on full throttle when the brass bleed valve has been turned up ever so slightly. When i turn it back down to the setting its at now its fine, so im thinking the overboost valve is kicking in.

I will give it a whirl later on. I havent got a wideband kit yet sorry so im unsure of the afr. It does seem to be better though at full boost with the 2nd stage jet drilled to 1.1mm - on full throttle the boost kicks in a little more aggresive and the power delivery is smoother and constant - it just wants to go !!

The car is currently boosting to this level - im going to rig up a seperate, more accurate boost pressure gauge today to obtain a better reading.

Carb emptying or running lean?

Is the carb in standard form?

The carb is totally standard except for the 2nd stage jet which ive drilled out to 1.1mm. Ive also stripped the carb this weekend and rebuilt it with a new gasket / seal kit.

OK - built the carb back up and refitted it and took it for a run.

In 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear the car pulls really strong but when changing to 4th and 5th on hard acceleration the car backfires / misfires / stalls for a split second and then comes back to life again - sometimes it will do it a few times so i back off. I've turned the boost down via the brass bleed valve and now its just nudging the first digit of the red section of the boost gauge  ( 13 psi ? ) and now it pulls OK all the way to top end.

Do you lads think this is the boost control valve on the intercooler hose cutting the power ( I've turned the little screw down on the inside all the way ) or could it possibly be something else ?

It was doing this before i jetted the carb - ive fitted new plugs, leads, dist cap, rotar arm etc.

Also if im running 15 psi on the standard T2 were about's on the boost gauge should the needle be touching ?

Any ideas ?

Cool - all done.

Refitted the carb and going to take it for a run. Will let you know the outcome when its been on the rolling road.

Thx all for your advice

Matt

How far into the jet do i need to drill ??

The tip of the drill bit seems to slide into the jet by around 2 - 3 mm. Do i proceed to drill further or would you suggest that its already been done ?

Out of interest do any of you lads offer a service to set these up with a wideband afr reader ?

Sounds like you have drilled it fine, you will need to give it a good clean through with carb cleaner as no doubt a small bit of swarf will be in the carb.

With ref to a wideband service or someone setting up Markey Mark used to offer that service and I am not sure if he still does.

What i meant is the tip of the drill will slot inside the jet even before ive drilled it. It goes in about 2 - 3mm. Do i carry on and drill it further ? and how far should i drill depth wise ?

About 2 - 3 mm inside the jet the hole does go narrow - is it this bit i drill ?

Sorry to yap on but i want to get it spot on first time round.

yes it's the narrow bit you drill only about 2-3mm, be careful not to drill to far into the carb, do it nice and slow and try to keep as much swarf out of the carb

Ok - good advice, so basically dont fit the 2 items below.

http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product ... 3&appid=16
http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product ... 8&appid=16 ( 1.3mm )

I removed the carb last night and stripped the "triangular section" down to reveal the 1st stage and 2nd stage jet. So i basically drill the 2nd stage carefully with a 1.1mm drill ? and that will be sufficient enough to fuel at 15 / 16 psi ?

( got myself a carb rebuild kit as well )

Also is the standard 12v fuel pump ok at this power or do i need to upgrade ?

So will these do the trick for the power i require ? .....
