Title: My white 5 gtt
Post by: fordy on 21:50, Mon 16 August 2010
So i took a gamble and brought the car off my cousin as a non runner, no mot or tax, water mixing with oil project

Spec is pretty much unknown but have found a few things:
Alloy header tank
ktec alloy carb top
mocal oil cooler
alloy degassing camber
ktec bored out turbo elbow
bigger alloy intercooler
samco silicone hoses everywhere
engine rebuilt back in 2006 new pistons+liners, bottom end rebuild
scorpion straight through exhaust system
clifford g5 alarm
Ecotek valve (removed as soon as i saw it)

This is how the car turned up on my door step after being towed,
Carb and turbo had both been removed and put in the footwell  :)

then i started work on the engine to get the liner seals changed and inspect the rest for damage

Whilst waiting for parts to turn up from renault i decided to take the front bumper, front archs and side skirts.
Found a few medium size rusted through sections in the drivers outer sill and a small hole in the passenger side outer sill.

So far have cut out the rusted sections and put in new metal and welded it, seam sealed and painted with paint, got to do the rear of the drivers sill as the inner sill needs a bit of welding but need to drop the tank as its too close for my liking

Replaced both front wheel bearings and bottom ball joints as they were knackered

Then my bits from renault turned up :)

new heatshields as mine are missing
new headgasket kit
new rear window square trims as mine are falling apart
new sideskirt clips as most of mine have broke
Metre of brake servo hose as some knob has fitted a ecotek valve in mine
New coolant
Sump painted black by my brother
Also found out the whole car has dynamat everywhere

Rebuilt the carb
Dinner trays are good for carb rebuilds    found out some muppet had got the accel pump spring wrong way around so it was sitting on the diaphram and would of split it sooner or later
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00293.jpg)

Then i got the engine all back together after cleaning the liner platforms (Drill wire brush attachment and flat screwdriver works wonders) new liner seals fitted, new headgasket

After much internet searching i found out where each samco hose should be
Engine bay now its fully functional but slightly smokey from turbo oil seal
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00301.jpg)

Turned him around so i can start work on the back end so took pics of the front end all rust treated and painted black

Bolted the front bumper and pushed the broken grill back in place to look better for the moment
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00302.jpg)

Now i got to fix up the back end
drop fuel tank
do small bit of welding on sills
fix the fuel pump and filter on properly
fix a fuel pipe leak
make a new reserve tank strap
raise back end as currently sitting far too low

Got to sort out the interior aswell as its a bit of a mess

Then hopefully get it to work for a mot and i just need to get the turbo rebuilt and the car onto the rolling road for a fueling check and boost increase

did a bit of filler and prep work where i had to weld in a new bit of metal on the top of the sill the other day during the week

all primered ready for a rub down and lick of paint  :nodyes:

And had a decent amount of progress today  :)

Sill has been painted
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00308.jpg)

Drivers and passenger rear sections of sill holes has been fixed and strengthened so much its a new jacking point   :D
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC00310.jpg)

Then the front archs, sills, floor pan, boot floor pan basically everywhere under the car has been waxoyl'd super thick

My reserve tank strap had rusted away and snapped and i wasnt going to pay 30+ delivery for one
So i went all blue peter on it   8)   Mine cost 0   :P

Cut away snapped strap from brackets

Cut out length of metal from brothers crash austin mini

Clean brackets ready for welding, Spot welded new metal strap to brackets, welding outside in the wind with a gas mig turned out half decent  :)

Temporary fit on car, bend strap to right place and measure the second bracket and mark where it needs to be welded on to get a nice tight fitting strap

Spot weld second bracket onto metal strap and you should have something like this

Then it got painted in etch and chassis black paint, and a nice sticky foam strip was cut to length to stop it rubbing through when its all bolted up  :)

Then after arseing about with the exhaust to get it a perfect fit, took off the rear bumper started poking some holes and found some rather nice rusty holes to weld up    So glad i brought a new reel of mig wire and gas bottle today

Provisional mot date is beginning of october fingers crossed if i don't go rust hunting again

Always wanted a 5 turbo and never been able to scratch the itch for one, was fixing one a few years ago for someone and i've never been able to forget it  :D

Once the car is mot'd, i might send it off to my brothers work and get it fully resprayed in standard white so all the dents etc are fixed in one hit.

Then it'll be my winter run around so i can take my 200sx off the road, tidy that up underneath before the tin worm sets in

Once summer is back i might keep it and drive it now and then or possibly sell it but i get attached to cars to easily

cheers fella,
i'm a mechanic by trade so got alot of skills which helps, i thought this was going to be an arse of a project but its turning out the car is much more simple than i thought to fix  8)

I found the same thing when i was doing mine. The more i worked on it, the simpler and easier i found it, i could have it stripped in hours.
Good work, im lookin forward to the finished thing

started working again now the snows over

Before
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0016_01.jpg)

My little helper making sure i dont grind my fingers again

And After

Doesn't look like much but we've done a fair bit.

Removed the tailgate as its scrap but kept all the wiring safe.
Removed the rear seats, drivers seat, boot carpet and under back seat carpet.
Removed the show roll cage.
Fixed the rust hole on the rear bumper mount and fuel filler neck mounting.
Fixed the captive nut so the bolt that holds the drivers seat frame to the body so it actaully screws into something and the seat dont flap about .
Hammered off all the renault sound deadening from the boot floor and rear arch sides.  :muahaha:

But i got pokey screwdriver happy and found another 2 rust holes

So i've crossed a few things of my to do list but added a few aswell doh!  :)

The worst rusty hole less than 1 inch away from the rear seat belt mounting point  :D
Some of the weld went shit near to the end as i ran out of gas and the gas regulator packed up  :x

This is just the inside part of the panel i've fixed, got to do the part in the wheel arch tonight  :)

Oh and you can see where i removed some of the sound deadening on the arch and floor

Rear seat backs repainted black
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0023.jpg)

Interior going back in
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0026.jpg)

Shopping this morning got some new engine bits
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0029.jpg)

Took the rear windows out to change the 3 little rubber bits and well i'll let the pictures do the talking.......

My newly paint floor is going to get ruined :( even tho it'll be recovered in sound deadening anyways
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/DSC_0034.jpg)

Looks like the welder is coming out again..... surely there cannot be anymore rust after this?

Dont jinx the rust! Atleast your well on top of it mate your doing a great job. I like the wheels lol.

This is gonna be a minter when you've finished :D  Seems to be the trouble with these cars - the more you dig around the more rust you seem to uncover. I lifted my original sound deadening in the boot only to find rust in the same place as yours. right where the boot floor meets the bottom lip of the inner wing underneath!
Shame about the rear window surrounds though.. :(  that's gotta be bad prep in the factory surely?
Keep posting up your progress though, am liking the wheels too.. look good in white, can't tell if they're 16's or 17's??
Title: Re: My white 5 gtt
Post by: Ash-Lee on 22:48, Sat 08 January 2011
My rear windows went like that, not quite as bad though.

I had no idea until it went to be painted and i pulled the rubber off, a load of red dust just fell out.

I'll have to check my rear arches, not the first time i have seen it in that place and the tin worm on mine is cropping up all over the place.
Title: Re: My white 5 gtt
Post by: fordy on 22:49, Sat 08 January 2011
i keep saying "its the last of the welding" but then i keep finding more whenever i pack the welder away    At least it should last a fair few more years when i'm finished

The worst part of a 5 i've found is the renault underseal its so thick in places that when tapped it sounds fine but if you heat it up and scrape it away you've find it's rotten  :(

The wheels are very nice design and 17inch but they are in such bad condition and the car scubs on full lock so they're getting changed for refurb'd renault 19 wheels which are 16inch and a bit smaller width tyre

Pretty much got the drivers window bit all fab'd up out of metal and clamped up in place just needs welding into place. Glad i found it now before we took to the car to be resprayed

Driver side has all been welded and fixed just needs some paint, welding took quite a bit of time having to let the panel cool down so it didnt warp but its looks fine  8)  :D

Passenger side shouldn't take too long as its not half as bad

Then started to fix all the messed up wiring loom and poor clifford g5 installation that was hanging down everywhere, so out came the dash and started re-tapeing the whole thing back into shape.
Removed all the scotch lock's and crap solder joints and replaced with heatshrink crimp connectors  8)

Centre cap off some Clio alloys?
Title: Re: My white 5 gtt
Post by: fordy on 12:02, Sun 16 January 2011
Its a centre cap off what i'm told are renault 19 alloys? Only prep'd and primered 2 of them so far

Was only meant to fix the fusebox wiring and tuck up the clifford control box instead i thought might aswell do it properly like everything else so far and rip the dash out   :D

And who ever installed the clifford g5 unit needs shooting as i've found scotch locks onto door pin wiring, not soldered a couple of wires just twisted and taped it and pure and simply put a half arsed job.

Got to finish the rest off today but had a few drinks last night down the pub so it's a slow start today

I know all about the dodgy alarm wiring.

Mine had at least 2 different alarms/immobilisers fitted in the past and the wiring was shocking. Cleaned most of it up over the years but i still have a problem with my fuel pump running with the ignition on.

I could do with yanking it all out and starting again, trouble is as soon as it's up and running all i do is drive it.  :D

And it the engine still starts  :D

Little video of it alive again albeit slightly smokey and idle a tad high
[youtube:1yol5rod]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD_h_FQaw3I[/youtube:1yol5rod]

Going to have to flush the oil as its gone a tad milky from where i couldn't drain the oil cooler so suspect it was full of water

Fitted new side skirt clips on the car and put the skirts and front arches back on and it looks like a 5 turbo again  :D

MOT some time next month just need to sort the little things out first

Not a happy bunny!

Bled the new master cylinder, all brakes bled up using a gunson easy bleed, happy days

Started engine servo seems to be working maybe a bit too well as it was quite light

stopped engine, checked for a fuel leak underneath
Then my brother says "theres another leak under the boot i just got dripped on"
Lo and behold the rear brake compensator is leaking  :x

So much for the mot this weekend

Ouch!

Nothing worse then messing about with brakes.  :(  Not exactly a cheap fix either is it? Not sure how much those things are but i'm sure they cost a lot more then a set of new pads.

online prices are around 130 sheets

Will ring around the local motor factors tomorrow armed with a trw part number to see if any of them can help me

then to find some 8mm microbore pipe at lunch for the fuel lines that are leaking vital v power on the garage floor

good news
got a new brake compensator coming for thursday and got some 8mm microbore copper pipe

also my brother brought these home today

before picture of badges with lacquer peeling off and looking rather tired

After

Simple to do, In person they are great and shiney  8)

My brother has said if people cover the cost of return postage and offer a few beer tokens, he'll do other peoples in his spare time, letters will have to be a brushed style finish but background can be most colours

The badges look smart.

I tryed something similar with mine, i just rattle canned some gloss black on and tryed to polish the lettering. I gave up in the end because the badges were a bit bent and out of shape when they were removed and they just ended up looking tatty.

Post by: fordy on 17:41, Wed 23 February 2011
nitromors the whole thing till its nice and clean,
then little bit of prep then a coating of etch primer or rust proof primer,
then my brother said something like he painted them black let them go hard/tacky and scotchbrite'd the letters off quickly carefully not to scratch the black,
hen sanded in one direction with fine paper and a block,
then lacquered over them
Title: Re: My white 5 gtt
Post by: fordy on 21:48, Sat 26 February 2011
new rear brake compensator valve as i found mine was leaking,
copper fuel lines as my standard steel lines had cracked,
new rubber hose for good measure,
and a load of jubilee clips again for good measure,

Compensator went on fine without a problem......But ..... I snapped a bleed nipple in the drivers rear caliper.... DOH! couldn't drill it out double DOH....
So off to the millfield motor factors for a new one for a lovely price of 70 and it came with a new pad carrier aswell   :)

But now i have 2 new rear calipers, brakes that bleed properly and actaully stop. Also new fuel lines that don't leak out v-power quicker than it goes in lol

Then I put in some engine flush to help get any water out of the engine/ oil cooler as theoil cooler hoses wont undo without breaking the line and cooler, so its had a flush and new oil fitted after a cheeky road test up and down the road to make sure it stops  lol

Then we got bored and a night free from the gf means as much time as we want to play.
So my bro finishes sanding the passenger side down and i got bored.....

Soooo i started ripping the black trim off the bumper, the brother wasn't too pleased as this now means he has alot more sanding and prep work to do muhahahaha

its off a clio if i remember right

but it jumps and misses half the screen so i need to investigate it and see if there is anything i can do to stop it jumping

about the jumping - i've had the same problem...
changed the whole wiper (took it from a '94 campus) and now it's all good

quite a productive weekend, the bro has done well even if he did look like a albino earlier

front bumper hasnt been touched other than ripping out the black rubbers.

thats most of the work we can do before getting it mot'd so i just got to put a drivers interior trim back on during the week and swap the wheels over for mot friendly ones,

Fingers crossed i make it to the mot station without having to call out rac to save me
Title: Re: My white 5 gtt
Post by: fordy on 19:24, Mon 28 February 2011
well the new wheels are on and looking sexy also checked for scrubbing as i dont like scrubbers

the rears are 100% fine even with my brother jumping in the boot

And the front clear fine when the car is jacked up.
When on the floor, they clear.
The front of the tyre misses the chassis leg fine but the back is kinda close possibly cardboard thickness maybe a touch thicker but for a mot they will be fine.

Down the road with the tyre flexing i recon it may scrub slightly nothing some 10mm spacers and longer bolts cant fix i'm sure

Also fitted some new number plates to make it look even better

The smoking issue is the only thing concerning me now!

If the car doesn't stop smoking when going down the road I'll have to abandon the mot

But my suspicions are that the smoking is being caused by 2 things,
1 being a knackered turbo oil seal much like my 200 and
2 being the old oil which had water mixed in getting past the rings and being burnt off making it seem worse

Fingers crossed i'm right or i need to change the heads over and get a new turbo sooner than i thought

MOT tomorrow at 10am at work, fingers crossed i make it there and that it passes  8)

Going to be getting anouther tester at work to do the mot test as i'd rather find any problems i've missed now before the respray rather than after its been painted

Bugger! got a bit too excited

Got part way to work and the car decided it wanted to be a 3 cylinder

Got home ok just at 40mph   did notice the boost gauge going off the scale so the actuator is broken

had a quick look over everything seems fine all hoses still on etc
good compression 11 bar on 1, 2, 3 and 10 bar on 4,
sparks are black but more fuely/wet/oily than anything cleaned up still rough idling
all ht leads are firing tested by the fooking painfull electric shocks through my hand

going to wip the rocker cover and carb off and see if i can see anything a miss but i doubt it
then off with the headgasket and turbo

tbh i'm quite tempted to either sell the project or drop the engine out and get a new one
Title: Re: My white 5 gtt

well the heads off
took it to work and its bent in the centre slightly but its got 73.9mm of thickness on the head so it'll skim

now i have to swap everything off the bent head to the straight head i've got spare and relap the valves, fit some new stem seals from a c20xe and change the inlet/exhaust manifold gasket for good measure

got some pictures but there phone quality sadly

So the head is back home looking very sexy indeed  8)  and only skimmed 8 thou off on both headgasket side and inlet gasket side to get it flat so the head is down to 73.7mm thick from 73.9mm

The spare head i've got.... well its a paper weight  :(
Corrosion pitting in the head where the fire ring sits, det marks a plently a few inlet  valves and valve seats and the valve guides worn a bit too much. So glad the other head is good or i'd be up the swanny

Got a bit carried away taking pictures of the heads lol

Head is pretty much built up only little bits left to put back on

BUT!

I broke a one way valve on the inlet manifold :(

Took it out to check it works fine and change the copper washer, put it back in and tried tightening it and it wouldnt tighten it just snapped  :x

So i need to go over my cousins to get one off his 6 spare inlet manifolds he's got

time for the big update

drum roll please ..................

Its alive  :D   8)  and it runs great, no more smoke, rough idle or milky oil :)

Also word of warning to everyone
when your little bro is turning the engine over to get fuel into the carb and the pressure up and you have the coil pack ht lead off
DO NOT HOLD THE LEAD to stop it arcing off metal

fook me the coil pack packs a punch    both my arms went straight up and kinda flapped about

But i may have a minor leak from the flywheel side half moon sump seal
Or it might be where i split some oil out when the turbo oil feed was off in a bottle to make sure i had oil moving around with the new oil pump. But thats a simple fix which will get done once i've put 50-100ish miles on it and need to change the oil next

Now i'm getting 4 bar oil pressure whilst cranking down to 2.5ish when the fan cuts in  8)

Did get a little video but its nothing special will upload soon
Title: Re: My white 5 gtt
Post by: fordy on 13:58, Sat 26 March 2011
Its now officially mot'd!

Only advisorys was
oil leak from sump (think the flywheel side half moon seal moved when the sump went up)
Antiroll bar bushes cracking
Slight play in steering rack internals

Had to slow the idle speed down and the co was 2.10 :D not to bad considering it was set by ear :)

now to fix an overboost issue and oil leak  :D

Well done matey, bet your well chuffed, those half moons are a pain in the arse, I tend to use the cork sump gaskets and place some sealant on the half moons and push the sump onto them never had a leak yet from the sump   it's just my gearbox that leaks alot

I've used the half moons 3 times now so probably time for new ones   altho oil will make good underseal

But its good fun to drive altho i can't drive it properly as its boosting up to high heaven  :?

I've got a bit of smoke when changing gear which i'm hoping clears up soon as the new rings have only done 30 miles so far or.... my old man will be right with it being a valve stem seal

see i fitted them the same way as they are on my cousins tungy which runs fine but he has a stock carb top where as i have the ktec one

Picture of how it was,

Now i've put the unrestricted port to the front actuator port piping but not rerun the car

Thoery is that the full feed to the rear of the actuator is holding the actuator closed?

new oil return pipe is here so i can remove someones bodge of copper pipe, just need to source some hoses for it as everywhere seems to want 25 each for them

And since its raining and tommy doesnt like the rain

So he is having his sump pan removed and the half moon seals changed in hope to fix the oil leak,
if it dont fix it then it seems its a rear main seal gone.... BAD times :(

Does anyone know if the top and bottom oil return hoses are the same or different? and what size bore pipe?

Which oil return have you got? There are 2 different types.

I know with mine the rubber end sections 'short 90 degree bends' are the same both sides.

i'll get a picture of the pipe soon fella, have tried to quick check of how it fits but cant work it out as i was in a mood

my pipe is 22mmish and the sump is 16mm internal dia

it was the flywheel side seal that was pinched and split

Putting the sump back on with new seals in place wasn't fun
1 bolt hole stripped out and one went in cross threaded, seems to of sealed  :?
If it leaks from the crank pulley end this time i'll know what it is but i'll be swearing alot

You might have the smaller sump but the larger pipe?

IIRC the phase one setup uses the smaller diameter pipework?

well the car is pretty much fully prepped  and whilst my bro was finishing off the passenger door shut....
I started to play

No grill at the moment as my old one is beyond repair so a new one is coming when i can afford it

Standard bonnet

Bad boy louvered bonnet unknown origin?

Come to the conclusion that it wont be used ever as,
1. the bonnet needs that much repair work i have no energy left to do it
2. it doesn't suit the car imo
3. my brother hates it and thus wont paint it for me

Stick with the OE bonnet, bad boy look is so 1990's    Or you could cut the bad boy bits out as the vented bonnet is nice apart from that

Just been through this start to finish, top work & I hope the respray goes well. I like the bonnet    I'm in need of a louvred bonnet I think as the valver lumps run hot, turbo will be hot. hot, hot

Still a few trims to fit etc but the most has been done and we can have a rest for a week

BUT its not all good news! Like a true renault 5 it has a new problem.......

Its clutch has decided that with the newly rebuilt engine and all the new power plus a spirited drive home, the clutch didn't like it and started to slip on full throttle after 3k

So new clutch time yay....

Ain't it    Will put some more miles on the engine before changing the clutch and drop the oil again as i've only done 60ish miles. Its had a oil change at 30miles already

Got home and was cleaning off the dead bugs with water and a cloth then put in the garage quicky as the bbq had just gone on and didnt want ash and grease on it

Will be interesting to see if after 17 owners what clutch kit it has fitted  :?:  :?

If it is a valeo kit then i'll fit a new valeo kit as the pedal feels fine to me, if its not a valeo then just a sachs clutch will be used as 120ish bhp is more than enough fun so far

My brother has a motive. he'll be using the line "since i preped and painted your car for free"

Basically I've got to rebuild and fit a metro turbo engine into his L reg spi classic mini when he buys a good engine and everything else to go with it. and there was me thinking he was doing it cause he loved me

its the second car he has ever painted   8)

the first car was this one after he had to put a new front end on it as he pulled out of a tight junction and got wiped out.

Sadly this mini died about 6-8 months later when a transit van went straight across a roundabout like a bat out of hell and side swiped the mini sending him 360 round with a nice smashed in rear quarter. But it lives on as the metal we used for welding came off this shell  :D

Just looked through the history folder

In 2001 it had a new clutch, doesnt say what make
then it had a carb tune up session,
then it had another new clutch in 2001,

And then in 2007 it had a luk clutch fitted
so 4 years of abuise at god knows what power

Time for a uprated sachs clutch :D

took it to work this morning since the weather looked ok and let the niggly faults begin

First was the choke wasnt raising the revs - fixed at lunch - throttle linkage needed bending into the right place so the choke cam would move the throttle linkage

Second was i had no speedo  :?  - Fixed at lunch -  tightened and cleaned the connector behind the dash and the one on the n/s inner wing

But its so much fun to drive! a car with character at last

Yup thats a hole in the diff and some pretty deep grooves,
The shaft bearings looks fine and theres no pieces floating in the other half of the diff...
On the hunt for a new one might try scrappys tomorrow
If no luck then i'll put it all back in and buy one from renault and do it in situ with the shaft out

So the list of things found wrong:
No roll pin in o/s driveshaft
Rear main oil seal fitted wrong way round causing my oil leak thats gone over the flywheel and clutch
Gearbox n/s diff section has a hole in it and deep grooves

The bro did some cleaning while i removed the gearbox

Did it drop straight out from underneath? I wonder if this is easier then removing the engine instead?

it came out the top ash :)

subframe was untouched apart from the n/s bar that goes from the inner wing to wishbone bolt  was undone and pushed all the way done and the engine is jacked up on a rubber block.

fiddly but possible once the right angle is found it just lifts up and damn these boxes are light

there is a few good 440 turbos in here hiding

Rolled over a 440 1.8 no turbo and got to work

finished off today

Bailey dump valve removed after finding it was leaking when we was cleaning it

Then we found out a knocking noise from the drivers front wheel when pulling it in and out at the top

Found both top mount bolts loose enough to move
Tried undoing one and it snapped
So off with the drivers strut which turns out to be koni adjustables then ground off the captive nut and rewelded a new nut to the bracket
Refitted it and took out the passenger sides and copper greased them up for good measure and jobs a gooden

Then we decided to put the strut brace on since "fingers crossed/touch wood" all the engine work is done

We then cleaned up the earths on the front of the car and put the bumper and bonnet back on

Took it for a spin up to tesco and treated the car to a full tank of 99 octane, then popped round to halfords for a new clio rear wiper blade and some satin black so we can paint the wiper arms next

Feels good being able to give it full throttle in any gear without having to worry of it slipping anymore

and i love the green box volvo clutch ok its a bit grabby but its not really that hard on the pedal, i've driven worse clutchs in the past

Small update

Radio wiring has been fixed after some time with continuity tests and finding lives and earths  :D
Radio is a classic kenwood cassette headunit given for free by a friend as i  Didn't want anything fancy to stand out like a swore thumb

Also my new grill from renault for a bargain price

Brother will be painting the grill sometime this week for me. In the meantime he has a Mini A series engine block i need to start building into a turbo block

Time to update

Grill painted and fitted on, it finally has a sexy looking face rather than a black hole

Then plugged the aem uego on

Majorly lean as boost hits  :x

So ordered a new fpr from renault

Which didn't fix it.. DOH! oh well its another shiney part fitted

So onto the lean issue
Tried a few things like accel pump adjustment - no difference :x
Whilst doing a power run down the road the accelerator cable fell out the linkage    - fixed on roadside
Found a nice major oil leak from the rocker going onto the exhaust making a bit of smoke

So after that i got moody...got home and put the car in the garage (Its favorite place)
Took off the strut brace, rocker cover and carb
Fixed the rocker cover leak

And proceeded to strip down the carb + a good spare on in the garage that hasnt been used for a while

And found this little bugger was semi blocked

So swapped it out for a good spare, and reset the accel pump with a 5mm drill bit

Then i thought lets go for a bar of boost, so swapped the ac jet for a 1mm and drilled the 2nd stage to a 1.2mm and fitted everything back together.

Just need to get a new fuel filter and bleed the coolant and see what we have tomorrow on the aem... fingers crossed at 10psi it overfuels enough for me to up the boost a little to 14 psi

insides are well erm ok ish for a cheap priced 5 but compared to the outside they are very poor

Rear seat cover as a cut in and i think maybe a fag burn not sure
Front seats bolsters are gone and a cut in one i think
The front frames are fecked as they dont move forward and backwards easily and everytime the Passenger seat is moved it looses another ball bearing from somewhere
Dash has 2 holes either side of the column as one was for incar boost and other a random switch
Door cars the fabric is coming away and the carpet it just old and crap

The interior is my next point of attack after the engine is running sweet without fault.

also found out if i turn the rear wiper motor on the rev counter goes funny ever time the motor moves so i might just change the dash loom

My rev counter jumps when i use the electric windows, thats with the engine off.

You should have one, if you follow the the fuel line for the carb you should find it hidden right down the bottom of the engine bay near the driver side inner wing.

So i'm going all out this time.. I will fix this leak!    Going to get a new rocker cover, new studs, new nuts, new washers and new gasket all from renault and fit it when i reset the tappets in 200miles time  :D

Tweaked the accel pump to come on alittle sooner prob 4.5mm drill bit, hoping this cures the lean spike coming on boost and fitted a bleed valve to raise it up to 14psi rather than 10psi  :D

Going to be busy now for a while with other things but the interior is next on the list

OK well where do i start since the rolling road

Tappets got really noisy, so aroudn 600 miles on the engine thought a reset tappets and fix the poxy rocker cover leaky fibre washers would be good

So stripped it all down started to adjust and then thinks why is the cylinder 2 rocker shaft bolt moving grabed the bolt and it pulled straight without any effort

The threads stripped out completely which i can only think back to when i missed and gear and over rev'd it alot

So i helicoiled and put a new bolt in job done i thought?...... nope turning both cylinder 2 push rods they have a very slightly bend in them

So adjusted it up for now and the engine still idles sweet and drives smooth.

Forward on a few weeks of the car being garaged up not being drive to today..
The day before i go to modified live at brands hatch....thinking i could get a 20 mins session with the 5

So got to work all good no leaks

Drive home was great, driving it quite quickly on the motorway overtaking and listening to radio 1 loudly... slow down for my slip road

WTF is that noise... sounded like a grrrrrrrrr, so change into 4th and noise gone change back into 5th and grrrrrrrr

Still got drive in 5th so thought maybe the nut had worked loose

Got home jacked it up f1 pit crew styley

Within 10 mins the cover was off and foudn the problem, it soon came clear that I wont be taking the 5 to brands hatch tomorrow or being able to drive through dartford tunnel on the way home

5th gear nut is tight but 5th gear is missing a few teeth look in the cover and found the teeth and some needle rollers from a bearing in there

Also what is this part? as it looks pretty battered

it was loose inside this shaft

Now the count down begins as the car is booked for snetterton track day taster on the 24th of july

So i need to get a gearbox in for that as a temp fix or swap 5th gear over and hope the rest of the box is fine or find a good refurbed box to put in

I had the same problem with the bolts for the rocker shaft mounts.

I drilled and tapped M6 i think, or the next size up from what they were. Had to do the same thing for the 3 bolts that hold the carb top on. Fine alloy threads strip away very easily.
Title: Re: My white 5 gtt
Post by: fordy on 22:19, Mon 27 June 2011
yeah i used a m6x1.00 helicoil set
but the original holes i think are actually m7x1.00? very hard to find then you have to find a bolt the same m7x1.00 which will be just as hard

found out the 5th gear oil feed on the end cover had sheered off causing 5th to starve of oil and melt the needle roller bearing and thus killing the gear

Another gearbox has been sourced but i'll be changing 5th gear over with the box in the car as its far too hot to be taking gearboxs in and out again

Right busy evening for me

Went over to cambridge to collect my winnings and i've scored alot more than i thought

won on ebay
head
gearbox
carb
loads of interior switchs
+ got given for free
a set of push rods
inlet manifold
exhaust manifold
water pump + housing
fuel regulator
rocker cover
uprated head bolts which i'll bin as new ones are cheap enough

Stripped the head down to a bare head, valves and springs ready for measuring thickness and straightness then of for a crack test and skimming in the future when money allows

Gearbox stripped down
Cover is good and 5th gear is fine  just need to find out how to swap them in situ as this gearbox is too manky internally to put in the car

Taught the bro how to strip a 5 carb and check jet sizes. its all standard jets so i'll be ultrasonic tanking it to make it uber clean through out and treating it to gasket set

Might have an issue
Doner 5th gear's are different sizes, thickness, design and ratio's, to what i have on the car

The doner is jb3 032 and the one in the car is jb3 014, both have the same diff ratios and gear ratios so they should be the same, yet visually there different gears
So did a bit of checking and i think someone has swapped mine over before for maybe a campus gearset at some point as thats the only guess i have as to why they are different and the reason behind me finding bits of needle roller in the casing with the gears

After finding what other bits i need to swap to make it work without grinding the casing it was all put back together with loctite

Right been giving him some tweeking over the week while he's been garaged up after a 2 week daily use mission with no problems

Replaced all the blowns dash button bulbs  and dial bulbs now i can see what i'm pressing
Strut brace is back on
Fiddled with the carb enrichment pump adjustment
Carried out the "cup" mod now boost is up to around 16-15psi

Then today the track prepping began for snetterton track day

Took him out today after putting in 200ml of millers extra cool (3.6% mix with renault premix coolant and a bottle of millers octane booster to stop any det that may come with the increased heat from 20 mins of abuise

Coolant temps are now alot more steady than before.
When giving it some abuise the temp moves up a little but not half as much as before but the temp comes down alot quicker than before so its doing its job well  8)

Adjusted the brake bias as it was majorly to the rear so i could bed the new pads and disc's in. So now its more to the front.

Changed the oil aswell still using mineral oil for now as its working fine and i want to make sure its bedded in 100% as i've only done 950 miles since i built the block, will wait till around 1500 miles before i start using semi synth

renault clutch cable and choke cable

next will be brembo discs and some pads not sure of make yet

then coilovers

Braided lines, and full polyrace bush kit
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110726_171310.jpg)

Excuse the manky oily subframe its just what is left from the gearbox overhaul.
Had to shave off a few mm off the wishbone bushes with a grinder to make them fit into the subframe without having to bring out the big hammer.

Wishbone bush was red but after burning out the old bushes it was hard to keep my hands clean
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_183208.jpg)

Then the brakes were next as they were pants on track and faded to nothing on the 3rd lap
So an order was placed...

Brembo discs 23 delivered from next day brakes :D
And
Carbone lorraine rc5+ pads from Ktec, which i will use for track days only and swap over to normal pads for any everyday stuff or driving to static car shows

Pads look so yummy
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_182755.jpg)

Baby size brake discs
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_183002.jpg)

So with the rear calipers already replaced a while back i felt the need for more shiney bits and since the front calipers are the only ones left on the car which were old, manky and had a slightly sticky piston on the passenger side....

2 new front calipers turned up aswell
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_183038.jpg)

Then tonight i have been swapping over the old red dot pads and unknown discs for my new shiney brakes

New stuff fitted
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_193055.jpg)

Old brake disc not looking very healthy at all
(http://i723.photobucket.com/albums/ww235/fordy51/tommy%205/IMG_20110802_193024.jpg)

Now i'm just waiting on some brake hose securing clips from renault as mine will probably fall to bits as soon as i go near them lol and it would look wrong having new hoses and old manky clips.

Then its back to the rear axle in an attempt to raise it up a few mm or so but that will be next week's mission

After begging the boss for time off, i've booked a couple of taster sessions so i can shakedown the car with the new stuff on
30th August at bedford autodrome on the gt circuit
8th september will be the return to the great snetterton 300
If all goes well without any big problems then i'll start doing some full day track days

Time to update again

Its taken a while to get the braided lines on,
One front copper pipe twisted with the nut as i undid the old pipe so had to make a new copper pipe from the master cylinder to the braided line,
Then the rears where mega rusted solid lots of release spray and some patience soon showed them who was boss

So had that all done and bled up during the week
Took the car out for a test spin friday to see how the brakes where and i'm glad i brought these pads once there is some heat into them they stop like nothing else.
Gave the car a bath to get the dust off last night.

Took it to work fine
Coming home was a different story...

Yup it brokedown about 2 miles from my house lol had to get the bro and old man to bring me some tools as all i had was the worlds smallest screwdriver.
Got it started somehow by luck so didn't turn it off and hot footed it back home...
Let it idle and then i tapped the coil pack main relay and it stalled!
A spare relay got it up and running again then i took to fixing of poor alarm install in the same area and cleaned the earths up again while i was there.

So i'll be running the car a bit incase there is anything else coming out the wood work and going to order a new coil pack and fuel pump for safety as i dont have spares of these lol

Car does look nice mate. You can't have enough spares though!

Alloys are Clio/ R19 jobbies. There's a set on ebay now if you fancy some.
