looks a real bargain first plan is to get it up to mikeanics and have it tuned on the rolling road make sure everything is running spot on then ill be looking at a group a carb and a ktr 180 turbo

right guys id appreciate it lots if you could help me out with a few engine tuning questions

i want around 170 bhp now iv been looking around and seen that ktr do an in car boost controller which should get it to 150-160bhp is this a good first step also im thinking of getting a group A carb on there along with a ktr downpipe
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo

right iv had a good talk with mark at gt motorsport and he has advised me fit an uprated radiator to help with the temps and a uprated fuel pressure regulator along with the group a carb to sort the fuelling, he advised doing any of this before whacking the boost up as he tells me it would only end in expensive tears

Hi mate
Was wondering if you had spotted this thread posted by one of the members??
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3478 (http://www.renault5gtturbo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3478)
It will point you in the right direction.
As for the Grp A carb....  I wouldnt bother as a rejetted std carb works far better. The link below will take you to the topic regarding the carb jetting.
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1471 (http://www.renault5gtturbo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1471)
The fuel pressure regulator should be fine..  Its the fuel pump you may want to uprate.

Hope that helps

thanks mate appreciate the help :)

think my plans are as follows

gt tuning radiator
uprated fuel pump and regulator
ktr downpipe
group a carb or rejetted carb
fit t25 turbo and have the boost set to around 16psi

Looks the same as my exhaust. Just needs lifting up a touch that's all. Probably loose rubbers.

taking the car to gt motorsport this coming week to have it tuned up as its not running as well as it should and also needs a bit of the wiring sorting on the dash as the heaters work when they want and also the boost gauge and speedo are a bit iffy

iv also ordered a samco induction hose as it doesnt have one at the mo and an baileys dv24 dump valve to replace the forge one i have
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo

set up carb
wideband lamba check to get the fuelling spot on
get the gtt  ram raid induction kit fitted

Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 17:42, Sat 28 November 2009
got my car back at 1pm today and all i can say is WOW its a totally different beast now mark has once again worked wonders, lets just say my car wasnt boosting right and had a few other niggles ill list whats been done

bailey dv24 dump valve fitted (sounds awesome imo)
GTT Ram raid induction kit and samco induction hose fitted
CGB Turbo heatsheild fitted
1.3mm Main carb jet fitted
wastegate tension tightened up (hardly had any tension)
jet bleed valve (less lag and also prevents me from killing the engine)
remove sump/clean out and refit (still no good new sump required)
Castol RS Oil and new oil filter
accelerator/choke cable oiled and clip fitted due to it sticking
Boost set to 16 psi
fuelling set up using wideband lambda

all the above done for 155

i cannot stress how good this guy is and i personally think he does himself outta money, my car is now perfect and my god its quick just taken my bro out in it and he loved it

right guys with the spec im running at the mo ill prob be seeing around 150-160 bhp is this correct ?

what id like to know is how much more id gain from fitting the following

2.5" turbo elbow and downpipe
2.5" full exhaust system
hybrid t25 turbo set at around 20psi
cgb tubular manifold
.9mm air corrector
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: Ash-Lee on 23:16, Sat 28 November 2009
I'd hazard a guess between 180-200BHP.

You will need the fuelling adjusted yet again, there should be no need to run the larger main jet, if you focus more on adjusting the 2nd stage you will benefit from better MPG.

I'm not sure the tubular manifold is completely necessary, people have run higher boost the standard item. However assuming the manifold flows better then standard then you should see some gains from that, maybe?

been very eventful in the few weeks that iv owned this car it defo has lots of character lol, well known for naughty niggles eg mine has been a persistant oil leak iv replaced the sump and gaskets along with oil cooler seals and then finally replaced the pipe and clip to the oil cooler and this has seemed to virtually solve it

the car is immense and very quick its a total pleasure to drive now its running 16psi boost and gets full boost at 3k, it handles like a go kart and turns heads like anything had loads of people come up to me asking about the car and saying how much they love em

anyways next plans for the new year are as follows

take car to bodyshop (front bumper, bonnet, drivers door and round the front windscreen)
new front discs and pads
new rear discs and pads
samco oil breather hoses (4)
samco top radiotor hoses (2)
get hybrid t25 turbo fitted and boost set to 18psi
carb re jetted to suit and 0.9mm air corrector
bjr 2.5" downpipe
fuelling set up with wideband
front and rear strut braces

few things to do there its a handful now so god knows what it will be like once other things are done

Sounds like your having a good time.

Remember when you replace the rear discs you will also need new wheel bearings.

10w 40 can be used but iv done quite a bit of reading up and spoke to mark at gt motorsport and he says 10w 60 is by far the best for the gt turbo
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: 5-Mission on 19:02, Wed 13 January 2010
10W 60 is too thick isn't it? That OE oil looks good at 30 :D
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: baby blue r5 gtt on 19:06, Wed 13 January 2010
is that fully synthetic?
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 19:08, Wed 13 January 2010
nah not to thick at all pal its spot on and my car has ran miles better with it in

this below is an answer i got back off a guy who has owned and tuned gt turbos for over 12 years

i personally use fully synthetic (to cope with the high oil temps the gtt suffer with) and usually a 15w50 or a 10w60 as the engine is a fairly old design.

well if it runs right thats all that matters, is yours set up to 16psi now? if so did you change the jets  :?:
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: 5-Mission on 19:18, Wed 13 January 2010
Would the F2N and B18FT engines benefit from this grade of oil? I know the F2n probably won't get as hot but I've just had a quick scan in the haynes manual and it doesn't even mention 10W 40  :o  but 15W 40 and 15W 50..
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo

could not comment on that one mate but id say the 15w 50 would be a good bet

hi mate yes its @16psi now i changed the main to 130 but some people dont ever change the mains and concentrate more on the second stage, iv got the ktec downpipe and machined/bored out turbo elbow to go on next week plus iv got this other t2/t25 .63 housing to go on which will be ran at 18psi so ill be looking at getting the carb and fuelling sorted again then
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: Ash-Lee on 21:40, Wed 13 January 2010
I have to question the high oil temperature though.

Mine has never gone past 100c even with enthusiatic driving and the standard oil cooler. Under normal driving conditions i might even say it runs slightly cool, usually the same as the coolant temperature (which would make sense considering there both intergrated in the same radiator) between 80-90c.

well i can well and truly say that the yesmobile is back taken the car for its first proper drive since dec 22nd today and boy did it put a big smile on my face cant wait to get the few bits done and have it back on the road properly at the start of march

i was going to get the t2/t25 .63 that i have fitted but im going stick with the t2 until it starts to wear and just add the ktec downpipe i have along with a unique gt motorsport turbo elbow , this will keep me more than happy for the next few months

well im sure with a little time effort and money you could get it into a good all round car, im hoping get mine to a decent show standard so the exterior will be getting sorted at a bodyshop then i want my door cards and rear panels re trimmed and also the bucket seats re trimmed in black with red trim

took advantage of the decent day we had yesterday to give the car a good going over and mini valet inside plus pumped all the tyres up as they had lost quite a bit of pressure whilst standing, but on a sad note iv discovered it has hgf whats got to me the worst is that there are receipts for the head gasket and bolts from september last year so it must of been done on the cheap.

heres a few new pics with a pic of the filler cap

What is the colour of the oil on the dipstick?

That might just be condensation on the filler cap, even more likely if it's been standing for a while.
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 08:05, Mon 18 January 2010
i have wiped the cap off twice tho and its come back again ?? the oil on the dip stick looked normal to me
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: baby blue r5 gtt on 09:21, Mon 18 January 2010
prob just condensation from been sat about, even if you wiped it ,
maybe a bit of condensation on the underside of the rocker cover, keep a keen eye on temps and oil etc and just see what comes about
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: Ash-Lee on 10:19, Mon 18 January 2010
I wouldn't worry about it to be honest.

Time it worry is when either the dipstick is covered in mayonaise or your rear view mirror is filled with smoke.

As a precaution just keep your eye on oil/coolant levels and coolant temperature.
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 11:54, Mon 18 January 2010
it is the head pal coolant is dropping big time and iv fount the oil leak peeing out the rocker cover looks like the last owner did a d.i.y job on the head, just had a price to do it 180 :) plus iv ordered a top rad hose thermostat
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: Ash-Lee on 13:34, Mon 18 January 2010
Unlucky.  :(

Rocker covers leaking isn't uncommon though, sometime they leak past the 3 nuts if the washers have not been replaced.

Also, if the rocker cover is overtightened the sides can bow outwards, so it doesn't seal very well at all onto the cylinder head.

twat eh, thought it was too good to be true at the price you bought it, least its not going to cost much to fix
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 19:24, Mon 18 January 2010
well it is going cost more now as iv had a cunning plan which involves getting the head ported and a piper 285 cam kit :) also goin renew the plugs/leads, fan belt, timing chain and tensioner

Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 05:48, Tue 19 January 2010
well im going go to town with the car now i was going to get a 285 cam and get the head ported but funds wont allow and i think its best to get it running properly and healthy, so am getting all the basics as i have the feeling this car has been a bit neglected its getting the following

new group a head gasket set
new plugs
8mm lucas ht leads
new dizzy cap and rotor arm
new fuel filter
uprated fuel pump
new fan belt
new timing chain and tensioner
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 05:58, Thu 21 January 2010
UPDATE

right the engine is going to be taking a different route now instead of me getting the head done straight away, im being patient and im currently negotiating a nice fully ported head with uprated springs from CGB Motorsport and to compliment this ill be adding a 285 cam and vernier iv also got my eyes on a front grill mounted intercooler which will then allow me to position the air filter in a much better place. now i know ill get slated for this over on the RTOC but im also toying with the idea of getting a tubular manifold and doing back to back tests and seeing just what is the diff if any would be interesting to know for sure.

All the above added to the 2.5" downpipe and GT Motorsport turbo elbow should get all the air/gass flow to its maximum which can only be a good thing ill prob stick the hybrid t25/t2 turbo i have on at the same time as well run at about 18psi
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo

my new investment thought it was rude not too as id reckon my cylinder head wont be much good as its at least gone twice before plus this will go with the spec im going for

just watching and bidding on a t28 off a 200sx s14 now all ill have to do is change the rear housing to a .49 as the .64 will make it too much of a lag monster, with the .49 i believe ill be getting full 22psi boost at 4k

Interesting, the area around the base of the valve springs is clearly very different.

yeah it looks a better design to me :)

my other new investment

Nissan 200SX T28 turbo going to get a .49 rear housing on it to replace the .64

You will need adaptors for the compressor housing. See how the pipework is bolted on instead of using just jubilee clips.

They should be easy enough to find.

iv decided not get the work done on my car this month due to the clutch deciding its had enough and becoming virtually impossible to get into 1st or reverse lol

so iv already bought an uprated clutch from steveL and am looking into a l/b flywheel courtesy of big jim racing, iv re booked my car in for the 16th of next month so i can have all the following done

fit new clutch and lightweight flywheel
fit new rebuilt t25/t2 .63 turbo (t28 pulsar wheel and cosworth comp housing)
fit fmic
fit 285 cam,vernier and springs
fit aem wideband kit and plasma gauges
fit new rebuilt carb jetted for 20psi and check fuelling is spot on

should make for a total different car once done

Looking good matey, with the extra bits it will be very different when you get it back on the road.  The AEM AFR kit is a very good matey I use the same one and can't fault it.

Are you building it yourself or is Big Jim doing the work for you?
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 12:47, Thu 20 January 2011
big jim is just doing the l/b flywheel for me then am taking it up to gt motorsport to get the work done, quick question is the clutch and flywheel an engine out job ? if so it makes it easier fit the cam at same time :)

yeah i reckon ill be rather impressed when its all set up 200bhp maybe?? we will wait and see
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: James5 on 15:05, Thu 20 January 2011
Yeah engine out matey, all though you can do them in the car it is a right bugger to do :)

200bhp Not sure on that turbo at it's part T2 I assume the rear side so that will be the restrictive part.
Title: Re: my new R5 GT Turbo
Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 15:10, Thu 20 January 2011
thats cool no probs at all

yes its t2 but the biggest t2 rear housing you can get i know turboted off the rtoc used a turbo very similar to mine and had good results, am not really a figure chaser though as long as it goes well and is set up right then ill be happy :)

works really well mate very good set up really strong , what set up are you going for? iv seen something that u might use a t28.64 ex housing, dont do that its way too laggy biggest ex housing you want is t25.49.

my set up is cossie comp housing, pulsar t28 comp wheel, .63 t2 ex housing with t2 wheel

i'm really not sure what i want to do yet so looking around for facts n figures since i have a 200sx t28 and a t2 sitting

Seem to be doing alot of track stuff lately and dont wanna be ragging it for 20mins a time to keep within the power band but i want a bit more poke

tbh if your on a track keeping it in the power band shouldnt be a problem, i cant see why you wont be able use the t28 front and mate it to the t2 rear am sure bb tuning used do something similar

if your after someone to build you the turbo up then give me a shout pal

also added a 285mm big brake conversion (best mod iv done )

and bought a tubular manifold as part of the group buy on rtoc
(http://i428.photobucket.com/albums/qq4/bluntyn40/IMG_0886.jpg)

alot of people asked me to comment if i noticed any difference in power or spool up etc with this manifold i cant honestly comment on power as i had alot of headwork done as well as inlet ported at same time. but i can say spool up has not improved at all.

i now run my car at 21psi on the t28/t2 which im really happy with still not got a power figure yet but i will soon so please bear with me :).

current carb spec is as follows

standard venturi
120 main
0.9 air corrector
2mm needle valve
1.3 2nd stage

fuelling is pretty much bang on really strong even at high revs in 4th/5th gear. i am on the lookout for a different induction kit preferably a decent size cotton green or ram air etc

Hi Blunty

Would of like to have caught up with you at WSR but as you have probably seen i didnt quite make it lol.

How do you find the .63 rear on the t28? also what is your vernier set at.

I have a .47 on mine at the mo but also have a .48 and a .63 rear which i could try but need machining out.

Hi mate i havent seen why you didnt make it? Hope all is well.
The. 63 rear works very well it pulls hard all the way to 7k even with the little t2 turbine wheel still in there they are actually very similar in size to a. 49 t25 housing . What turbo are you using then a t25/t2?.
Am not sure what the cam is set to but ill find out asap for you.

Remember to give me a shout if you want any turbo work doing.

little update

turbo is now removed from my car and off to have the new turbine wheel machined into the .63 t2 housing and its not a t25 tomcat turbine im going for, decided to go for a pulsar turbine ;)

also a bloody brand new wheel bearing gave up on me after only 225-230 miles so mike (gt turbo spares) is sorting me one for half price which is a great gesture by him

oh and last but not least iv invested in a 2nd set of wheels, 15" oz superturismos complete with tyres for 150, yes they are a bit tatty but thats no bother as they will be powdercoated in black :)

I'm having a similar wheel in my new turbo for the 19 turbo... My turbo is a journal bearing version of the 2871.

Title: Re: my 1991 R5 GT Turbo
Post by: bluntyr5gtt on 06:47, Sun 25 September 2011
well after a few delays we finally fitted my new turbo on friday, and my god what a difference its made, the car was quick before but now its in a total different league it actually took me by surprise on how quick it was eg spinning the wheels in 3rd in the dry . Only gained around 200rpm lag which i am impressed with seeing as iv gone from a t2 turbine in the .63 t2 housing up to a t28 turbine and shaft.
so its now all systems go for next months dyno day at wgt cant wait to see how it goes

finally had my car on the dyno, was tested on wgt hub dyno at the day i organised :)

and heres the graph

the old lines you see are my old 178bhp set up, best thing is my fuelling was mega rich 10.8afr full boost so there is a few more ponies be had just by leaning carb out

The car's looking fresh dude  8)  I've been resisting the Supernatural Hybrid, how is it?

Making good power there as well. What's next on the list?

Clean and quick!  8)

cheers for the comments guys :)

the supernatural hybrid is brilliant and is much better than the ag hd wax that i used to use.

next on the list is group a exhaust valves, fit this big jim racing downpipe/elbow and get a full 2.5" system made up. obviously going to lean the fuelling out a bit which should see it run around 240bhp at same boost level (24psi)
EFI is also a very strong possibility :)

also going to be doing a bit of restoration on the bodywork new bonnet, drivers door and then tidy up any bits that need it

my big jim racing downpipe/elbow thats going to be fitted over winter with the new full 2.5" exhaust system and enlarged exhaust valves should help get them gasses out quicker and aid a tad with spool up.

efi is on the shelf but all is not lost as the car is 100% getting mappable ignition which will do away with the pretty dated and limited aei unit. been speaking to a fella who has done this conversion on his 5gtt and he reports a gain of 30bhp in the 2-3k range which for me would be brilliant as my turbo doesnt hit full boost until 4.2k.

as you can see the supposed better side was not that good at all :( but all is being sorted

we have then got to do drivers side which is a massive job as virtually all floor pan that side has gone as well as sills, rear bumper mounts need doing also. had to get a new bonnet as mine was fecked and also new drivers door.

iv got a load of goodies to go on the car including braided brake hoses, polished cupro/nickel brake lines, ktr jr air filter, door cards are being flocked and a set of ds2000 brake pads all round.

Andy, I'm really pleased you stuck with her, she will be mint when you've finished.
I still get the urge to buy another, I just don't have the time or health these days due to my back being fooked to be lying under a car welding or fixing things :(

Ouch.

It looks mint outside as well, it just goes to show how things like this can be hidden away, getting worse over time.

Good to see it's all been cut out properly. I did my sills last year, still have the rear bumper mounts and behind the headlights to do sometime soon.  :(

nail on the head there ash you never know whats being hidden under the skin

really impressed with the progress and attention to detail my mate is showing he is not leaving anything that could become a problem.

thats one place on mine that seems ok around the headlights but you never know something will probably pop up :(

when will you be doing them jobs pal

This pic I can relate to :-

Mine was exactly the same.

As for the rest, f**k me that's quite bad. Has this not been picked up sooner in previous MOT's etc? I know they are quite limited in what they can do but even a small tap with an inspection hammer should of shown that up?

What's going to happen now? Cut the rot out and see whats left, or you just going to stick with it?

EDIT.

Here is mine, i'm guessing your jacking point underneath is shot as well?

hi mate god knows how its not been picked up as you didnt need a hammer to poke through it, you could do it with your thumb, i know at the last mot they stated limited inspection due to bodykit  :?

oh yes fella its all being replaced theres no going back now were too far into this   , yes the jacking point is none existent but i have a new one from gt turbo spares to go there.

i think 99.9% of people would of broke the car for parts or reshelled it but i couldnt do that this is my car any other way wouldnt of been the same,  i suppose one good thing is it will have a bloody solid shell for years to come

Blunty that looks awful and as you say most would have swapped shell's but good man for sticking with it will be a nice mint motor once it's all finished.

yesterday popped up the garage and whilst there i decided to remove some sound deadening out the boot.

As you will see there is no floor pan hardly left in the drivers side, luckily my mate mike at gt turbo spares is sending me a floor pan up with seat mounts etc.

on the plus side the inner sill on drivers side is now fitted/welded
