Title: My little 5 GTT project
Post by: lexgtturbo on 21:03, Tue 27 May 2008
As youre about to see there was ALOT of bodywork to be done on this one.

Here its back from respray, and ready for reasembly

And here it is reasembled, exept for te F#% petrol flap which had one of those horrible isotta stickers. so im still waitng for a new one as the one ive got got F%# when trying to remove the sticker. other than that i guess im pretty satisfied with the cars appearance, except lowering it and getting some 17"s for it  :)

Nice car, that bumper is going to get mullered on the road though
Watch the kit on pot holes as well, i had the same kit on my old GTT, caught the corners at the rear on potholes, really pi55ed me off.
Keep up the good work though, looks sweet, i love the kit, as i say i had it a few years ago, i used the K-tec front bumper though.

Thanks  :D
I was just wondering what i coult do to prevent the front bumper scraping like hell? the is lowered in the front at the moment though im considering going back to the original springs. Just need more ground clearance, and hopefully a stiffer ride than than the original one.

Post by: 5teve L on 21:32, Tue 27 May 2008
Thing is they do 2 bumpers for that kit IIRC, one for big rims & one for smaller ones.
It's really low if you have small rims & the one for big rims
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 21:49, Tue 27 May 2008
Well then I guess Ill have to get some 17"s to be able to use the bumper for normal driving. And to do that I guess Ill have to get spacers and coilovers to be able to fit the 17"s as well.

BTW the paintjob you had on the 5 you posted here what effect is it?
SpectraFlakes or something? Looked really sweet  8)
Title:
Post by: 5teve L on 21:55, Tue 27 May 2008
Yeah, Rage spectraflash silver.
I ran 17's on mine, the wife has 17's on her car & it doesn't rub (only on full lock so smaller rims for mot or spacers) ;)
Title:
Post by: NaylsGTT on 21:57, Tue 27 May 2008
I like it!! :)

two things i'd change though,
1- it needs an open mouth grille to go with the kit.
2- bigger wheels,i dont like big wheels,im actually taking the 17's off mine, but you need bigger wheels, again to go with the kit.
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 22:05, Tue 27 May 2008
I agree.
At the moment i also need the front wheel arches to go with the kit.
But as a student I cant afford too much right now so it has to be done when I get some more money.  :(
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 22:09, Tue 27 May 2008
hehe for the MOT i use my ugly 15"s and my beat up standard bumper, looks shit in combination with the side skirts, but as long as it passes the MOT Im happy

so as long as im not using full lock when turning it wont rub with 17"s ET35?  even without coilovers? I need to get some ASAP  :D
Title:
Post by: 5teve L on 22:15, Tue 27 May 2008
On the arches at the front no (as long as you aren't super low), inners on lock yes, some standard shocks may need 'hammer time' to flatten the cup a bit, lol, some don't, it doesn't effect the spring though & if you take your time no one should notice, you need to run 205/40/17 tyres as well.
The rear may or may not need a trim, it's something you'll have to look at.
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 22:26, Tue 27 May 2008
Thanks ALOT for tips  :D

Im running yellow koni with some black eibach springs, not sure how much they lower the car. I think somewhere between 35-50mm, wasnt me who lowered the car. guess its "hammertime" pretty soon  :D
Title:
Post by: 5teve L on 22:30, Tue 27 May 2008
Koni's may clear ok, if not, try some 3 or 5mm spacers, i ran 10 or 15mm with longer bolts on the rear of mine to space the rears out as they sat too far in foe me, i can't remember if i cut the rear out a bit under the arches or not though.
I may have chopped the front a little as well under the aches (i had the carisma fronts as well)
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 22:42, Tue 27 May 2008
well then ill have to work alot this summer, cause rims and tires cost... :(
Was thinking about the Momo FXL rims, i think they will look wicked with the cars colour.  :D and maybe ill get some 195/40/17". have to see how much money im going to get my hands on this summer... i guess it will look pretty good on the little 5  8)
Title:
Post by: dazzleandshine on 11:22, Wed 28 May 2008
iam not really in to after market kits as like the standard look but ive just got to say that front bumper looks really mean and i really like the look of it, keep the good work up
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 14:01, Wed 28 May 2008
thanks  :)

BTW i like the originals to, but all the plastic on the car was cracked to the point of no return allready long before i got my hands on it. As we all know phase 1 plastic costs craploads of money and as you say the kit looks mean and it did only cost a fraction of what the original would have cost... And thats the only reason ive got the kit.

 :)
Title:
Post by: scratcher on 16:07, Wed 28 May 2008
yep, phase 1 plastics cost too much, and its impossible to get a grey front bumper :(
your car's looking good though, i'm into the orriginal looks too but i do like this kit, good luck with the bigger rims  8)
Title:
Post by: dazzleandshine on 16:39, Wed 28 May 2008
it sure does look good and you are going to get a few people looking at it when your out and about
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 18:32, Wed 28 May 2008
Thanks alot  :D

The car has cost me an unknown amount of hours in the garage, and im really glad for all the attention it gets. Next on my list after new rims is going to be the engine.

At the moment im awaiting a new heater matrix as the old one is leaking like hell. Again meaning 3-5 weeks untill ill be driving it again
(only reason for ordering it from the UK is that in Norway it costs 230+tax!!!!)

Because it costs nearly 70 just getting a package sent to Norway from the UK, I added a new actuator (14-18psi), as my old one is beginning to get a bit loose.

And before I get any technical questions conserning whats done with the engine, ill answer right now: I have no idea...

Still what I do know is what Ive done myself: changed the turbo for a garret T3 good for 300hp, of course the engine cant generate anywhere near that much(im not that stupid hehe). The boost was stable on 1,4-1,5 bar when i drove it last year, and no pinking, allthough it might not be all that accurate because of the not so tight actuator. At the moment its running on 1,2bar. It suffers from a great amount of lag but still when the turbo kicks in at 3500rpm its breathtaking(atleast i think so).  :D

So now its just waiting for parts :(

looking good mate love the paint job 8)  8)  8)
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 20:44, Wed 28 May 2008
Im glad you like it  :)

The colour is one of the Mazda Blacks, tho because of all the metal it looks dark grey. Still if I where to respray the car again sometime I want black metallic and flakes. At the moment Im really glad I picked that colour.
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 21:26, Wed 28 May 2008
na lex that colour is perfect really sets the car off, another one off 5 8)
Title:
Post by: dazzleandshine on 21:33, Wed 28 May 2008
what rims you going to go for then ?
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 21:43, Wed 28 May 2008
Momo FXL or something else with a black center I think.
Im open for suggestions, as long as theyre not white... dont think white rims would look good on my car.
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 21:47, Wed 28 May 2008
some white wheels look stunnig on dark cars, but you gotta get the right style and size, like compomotive mos in 16s
Title:
Post by: dazzleandshine on 21:49, Wed 28 May 2008
iam looking for some new ones for mine a the minuts as dont like the look of mine so when you get some psot a pic so i can have a nosey!!! lol

I know, compomotive rims look great, but still i think the car would look duller if i go for white rims. They take the attention away from the rest of the car.

Anyway as written a while ago I need atleast 17"s to get the groundclearance and to fill the gaping holes between the bodykit and rubber.

Hey lex,  I meant to post a reply yesterday but as I was typing my laptop went into freeze mode!

This colour is stunning...  I wanted to ask what it was ...but u've already answered my question now  :D  I would deff keep this colour... and hats off for all the time and hard work u've put into your 5!   8)   hearing how much the ph1 kit prices are...  it sounds like a good idea to do something different on a car that wasnt looking its best and making into something that your proud of  8)

They work really well on the 5,  there was a copper colour 5 with anthracite versions...   8)  not sure if you can buy them anthracite or you have to get them done like that yourself.

Thanks alot GTTboost :)
I brought it to an annual car show in the beginning of may this year. It got lots of attention, on the way to the show, on the show and on the way home  8)

One of the main reason for this must be because there were 7 registered GTT`s in Norway in 2005, and the number is sinking. So in this country the car is pretty unique even as standard  8)
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 22:21, Wed 28 May 2008
its like that in scotland, because of our salty roads and sea air it just rots cars, there harder to pick up a good one in bonnie scotland
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 22:25, Wed 28 May 2008
Hmm there were a couple of interesting ones there. Liked the cast BL`s. Just wonering how they would look on the car...
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 22:30, Wed 28 May 2008
Yup, salt and cars shouldnt be mixed. We have the same problem in Norway as you got in Scotland. When you go to bed at night you end up having nightmares because you hear the rust eating up your car...  :?
Title:
Post by: bazr5gtt on 22:39, Wed 28 May 2008
yeh my 5 was like an alcaseltser soon as it touched water

Post by: scratcher on 15:39, Thu 29 May 2008
i reckon you should try a set of the flat wipers, i put them on mine the other day. they'd give a nice little touch to your car
(http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g319/pimpscratcher/Photo-0054.jpg)

and i'd get the compomotive wheels, they look brilliant, in a lighter anthricite color so the car doesn't look too dark?
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 23:39, Tue 24 June 2008
Thanks alot for the tips.

Its been a while since the last time i wrote here. So heres a little updadte on what ive been working on since then:

The heater matrix in the car decided to start leaking, and as the fool I am I started looking for leaks in the door and sunroof seals instead of just ripping out the dash at once... Anyway the heater matrix has been changed now. (Its never going to be changed by me again, what a crappy job)

Im still trying to work out a bunch of electrical faults.

At the moment my biggest problem is refitting the dash, and of course the clips at the sides were too brittle and broke. also the dash wont fit properly.(I guess Ill find the instructions in the technical issues somewhere)

And now for the good news :)

I might get a set of 16" wheels traded directly against the 15" Ive got now :)

I might put out a few work in progress pictures by the end of the week, as Im working evening shifts this week.

Well the cars rolling on 16"s now

sorry about the bad quality picture. its just to illustrate.

At the moment im trying to mount a FMIC and a 13row oil cooler.
both are the universal type.

Does anyone of you have more detailed photos of the pipeline from the turbo to the carb? It would help me alot.

Also one more thing. The silicone pipes I got with the IC seems to be way to tight, is this normal? at the moment im considering using an angle grinder to try to get the pipes to fit. I guess that isnt te best of ideas.

Im also fitting a 2mm steel plate under the front bumper to avoid costly resprays.

Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 22:24, Sat 19 July 2008
Thanks  8)

Hehe yes we have more speedramps here than normal road... It havnt been much trouble yet, tho Im fitting 2mm steel plates under the bumper to avoid expensive resprays if i hit some of these.

Oh and YES theres actually a good reason why im fitting a FMIC now... The old one blew up!!!  litterally hehe.

As stated before, I really could use som more detailed pics of how the pipes should go. I cant see where the pipes go on the pics in the DIY section.
Title:
Post by: lexgtturbo on 15:18, Thu 31 July 2008
Well the FMIC has been fitted now I only have to move it dow about 2" so that itll fit nicely behind the bumper  8)

Heres some pics of some of the work thats been done lately... (yeah i know the cars not as clean as it should be...) :

Yup its down with the worms

Thats why im saving for this kit http://www.dsengineering.co.uk/airsuspe ... p?model=23 (http://www.dsengineering.co.uk/airsuspensionkits.php?model=23)

Hehe I was born in Bergen :)

1200 is alot i know but still its worth it if i get a car that can drive over speedbumps :P

When it comes to the air suspension I just googled for it and found the site. I have no idea if they are up and running or not to be honest.

Sad, but in Finland we are not allowed to use adjustable air suspension kits (I think that Citroen is only manufacturer that uses air suspension kits)...

Well i dont think thatll be a problem as when its time for MOTs i can allways change back to the Konis and use the original front bumper, and change back again the day after

I dont really know how the rules in Norway are when it comes to air suspension. But if I get Renault to accept it then suddenly its legal... Guess ill just wait and see what happens.

Thanks :)

Yep, I really like the way it fills out the mesh in the front bumper.
I must admit that im proud of the work Ive put into the car the last year, I would have done more if it wernt for the F#"% short on money bit
Being a student doesnt help either so after next summer, it might just come quite a few new mods on it  :D  I cant wait :)

Its been a long time sice i last posted an update on how things are going with my 5. My headgasket gave up and died. So now Ive got 2 options on what to do with it.

Option 1: Get an uprated headgasket and just change it

Or I could (and really want to)

Option 2: Change the headgasket, and drive the car onto a boat heading for the UK. And hopefully one of you guys could help me out with a complete rebuild of the engine, change the clutch, fitting a wideband, and fitting a VNTturbo.  8)

But first I need to get the funds for this, Im thinking of doing this in the mid og late summer.

If this is something that sounds interesting, PM me or write it here in this thread. Of course Im not putting my 5 in the hands of someone who hasnt done this type of rebuild before.

And yes im serious. Theres just about noone in Norway who know how to do any work on the GTT`s.

If there where someone in Norway that could be trusted with my car, I would have gone there...

Thanks Baz :D

The headgasket is a fairly easy thing to change.

Its all the other engine mods im going to need help with, like making the required bits and pieces needed for the VNT to be fitted, and completely rebuild and reinforce it so that it wont blow up after 2 miles :p

Evicted? Noooo, thats no fair :( . As youre getting close to finishing your project 5 I really hope you get it done before you need to leave the garage.

Looks like i might have to find a rentable garage for this job then, and maybe just rent it for 2-4 weeks atleast.

Its been a long time since my last update. Too long time actually. Holy crap were talking years...

Ok so today I`ve finally taken taken off the head and tried to find out where the problem that may have caused the failure. The only problem is that there are no signs of damage to the old head gasket  :? However tomorrow Im heading back to the garage to see if the head might be warped and in need of skimming. If thats not the problem then i dont know what the reason for insane amounts of smoke could come from. oh and yes the turbo is still in good condition.

I might even take som pics tomorow of the progress.

As promised here are some pics of the cylinder head, head gasket and bottom end, I cant see any faults in the gasket. Maybe one of you guys might see something I`ve overlooked.

I'm not as eagle-eyed as some but can i see some det marks on the old gasket?

Have you checked the liners haven't got any cracks, when i split one that smoked big time. Don't turn the engine over without clamping the liners down first though.
