Title: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 20:34, Wed 20 March 2013
Hi guys, now on my 4th 5.
This one was an impulse buy as after 3 i still feel like ive never finished a renault 5.

Bought it blind at an absolute steal.

Totally standard, had been garaged for 7 years when i picked it up and all it needed was a jump start to get it back, drove it 80 miles. Ran like a beaut.

Body has a couple of rust spots over it but no rot (not that ive found any yet anyway)

First things first, new battery and all that air box crap needs to go
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0310_zpsb05b9333.jpg)

Rear wipers gone along with the washer

Checked under the rear for rust, seems very tidy, so ive coated it in waxoyl anyway
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0312_zpscc79c355.jpg)

No Photo yet.

And tonight i took the spare wheel holder out (spare wheel with brand new tire) and coated the underside of the boot aswell, again no photo cus it keeps getting dark when i finish.

Front brakes seem a bit solid so new pads and discs this weekend then go for an MOT.

Once its back yellow lights, rat bonnet, chopped springs and decked rear :D

Plans for the future are leave as a sleeper, gonna get my steels banded..... oh and drop the volvo engine in

Cheers

Cheers, its got a few scabs but no rott.

MOT test gave it a clean bill of health (after i had changed the pads, discs shoes and a rear cylinder), literally 2 advisories, brake and fuel pipes look corroded, standard.

Im amazed really. Gave her a clean and then this happened.

When i can make my mind on what to do with my springs ill deck it.

Apart from a few marks on the seat, which im sure will come out with a shampoo the interior is as new.

60,000 miles, and original tape deck ;)

Already running tights.

Finished the zed lights aswell as i had the equipment out.

Springs ordered, 60mm gt turbo springs, they say to go with shortened shocks only, so ill either destroy mine or im hoping that they will be both a bit stiffer, and not drop the full 60 as the campus is lighter
Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 21:43, Tue 09 April 2013
Springs arrived quicker than i thought so got them on today.

Standard Height
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0337_zpsb49307da.jpg)

Standard spring vs apex spring (they sent me 50mm anyway so im happy that i wont mess the shocks up)

Fitting those was easy, but i did get the issue of because they are so low they dont hold all the top mounts in their natural positions, so i had to stick it all on and hope for the best.

Front done, (didnt realise it was blurry when i took it)
Looks like a dragster :D

Rear done, went so smooth, nothing was rusted together, everything came loose easy.
I love working on clean renault 5's

Took her for a test drive, everythings fine, no knocking at the front, turned lock to lock, no knocks. Took her on the bumpiest road round here nice and fast aswell, apart from getting air im sure nothing felt like it fell out of place.

I measured before and after heights, turns out my 50mm springs gave me a 100mm drop up front, and to make it level it was a shocking 180mm drop at the back.

Job Done  8)

Slammed!  8)

I really should level mine out a bit, the fronts have settled a bit lower then the rear over time so I look a bit off balance.  :?

Its a spare that ive kept behind. Grinder, salt, lemons and bleach :D
The thing is i dont really understand how cars can rot from the inside out but a pannel can stay rusty for ages. Must be something to do with the ingress of water that cant escape.
This bonnets been on most of my 5's and its still fine.

Its not a danger to anyone, not a problem.  8)

Step 2:  Fit proper engine.

(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0423_zps2b71d2ec.jpg) (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/sparkysparks1/media/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0423_zps2b71d2ec.jpg.html)

Re-used campus gearbox (btw 2 dowels need to be removed to use it)
Connected both gearbox mounts
Gear shifter
Speedo drive
Clutch
Both driveshafts
Exhaust downpipe
Reconnect shocks
Starter motor

On tomorrows to do list.

Modify and fit front engine mount, its gonna need more work than i realised
Get smaller aux belt
Get some gearbox fliud
Connect fuel lines

And then try to make sense of either the wiring or the plumbing
Title: Re: Campus Build

Half the wiring done. I just have to find the fuel pump relay and interrupt it with the new fuel pump feed (i think anyway)

Whilst checking the fuel pressure its starting to seep from one of my joints, so i have to make that a more permenant fitting.

Hole cut through firewall for nice neat loom grommet.

Front engine mount chopped up and fitted

Gonna get the aux belt tomorrow and give the gearbox some fresh oil.

Then figure out the plumbing for coolant and intercooler and im pretty much done.

(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0428_zps7466ee44.jpg) (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/sparkysparks1/media/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0428_zps7466ee44.jpg.html)
Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 21:29, Tue 28 May 2013
Fuck this car!  All of the coolant pipes will need chopping about to fit, the intercooler doesnt fit. Ive borrowed my mates and i cant get that to fit.

The fuel pump wire is a mystery, ive tried to tap straight into the fuel pump relay (which i figured was the one that made a noise when ignition was on). But i tried every wire down there, even removing the relay and trying every wire again.

(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0430_zpsc63c9a09.jpg) (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/sparkysparks1/media/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0430_zpsc63c9a09.jpg.html)

All i get when cranking is a struggle to start then itll only run for half a second while im still cranking.

Losing patience

Howabout this.
If i run a line directly to the fuel pump live from the fuel pump signal from the new loom, then a local earth on the pump.
Disconnecting the original loom all together?
Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 20:43, Wed 29 May 2013
Ok ive figured it out.   had the fuel lines the wrong way round

Fuel pump live to that thick brown wire with the relay missing and boom, shes alive.

Next i have to finish the coolant hoses and intercooler hoses. This will be the hardest part i think.
Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 20:25, Thu 30 May 2013
Exhaust done.
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0431_zps7b17ac01.jpg) (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/sparkysparks1/media/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0431_zps7b17ac01.jpg.html)

The original exhaust sits in a pocket under the body with a heat shield, this exhaust misses that pocket by about 5 inches and sits on the fuel tank (with a rubber donut inbetween)
Even if i had got it in there it still would have had the same angle it does now as i have no back box or tip thing.
Straight off the cat atm.

Cooling, i am in need of a gt rad as my campus one is pretty unsuitable.
If anyones got a cheap one going gimme a shout  :D
Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 21:19, Sun 02 June 2013
Ok the cars 99% done :D

Its all in and connected up but ive got issues with the water flow, so still need to look at that, but otherwise, all done. Cant wait to drive it.

My buddy lemme borrow his intercooler and piping and rad whilst his is off the road.

Starts and ticks over like a beaut. Even with the cooling issues, its getting real pressure in the cooling and nothing leaking or popping off.
Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 20:44, Mon 03 June 2013
Um, had the water pump spinning the wrong way

Then i was just waiting for the fan to kick in. Fan switch doesnt work

So with the fan on constant, the car runs, and runs sweet.

Took it for a test drive, almost stalled it because the clutch feels like a paddle clutch.
It goes and fuck me does it go. I went to overtake someone and spun the wheels up in second and third.

But no 0-60 yet as my speedo hasnt plugged properly, gotta check that when it cools down.

I love it :D

Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 19:36, Tue 04 June 2013
So i took the car to work and took a mate out, he owns a clio 182 and he was very suprised how quick it was :D  i think thats mission accomplished.

when to leave work and my fuel supply line popped, bloody good job it didnt happen when i took it out, spilling on a hot turbo that would have been the end.

Fixed that at work, then set about doing the speedo drive, when it popped again right infront of me,

Replaced the hose (bad choice of hose, was just the closest hose i had to hand.) with some thick air line hose, so that shouldnt go again.

And got the speedo drive to finally go in and work, so i know how fast im going now.

Still having idle problems from when the engine was in the volvo, its gotta be the idle control valve, so im gonna get a replacement on the way.

Had a bit of a breakdown on sunday.
Turns out i had the water pump the right way round the first time, but had a massive air lock in the system.
Ive sorted all the hoses out, used some nice plumbing fittings.
And put a bleed nipple in the rad.
It runs perfectly now, and i dont have to worry about overheating (anymore)
Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 22:28, Fri 30 August 2013
Well a few months in and its all running well.
Only issues are the exhaust scraping and an insanly bumpy ride :D  but i can live with those.

So i got some gt turbo hubs with brakes so i can actually stop.

Went to put the hubs on with what i thought was gt turbo shocks and got this.
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0557_zps0233bcb7.jpg) (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/sparkysparks1/media/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0557_zps0233bcb7.jpg.html)

Which is good if you like buying tyres, which i really dont. So im putting this back to normal with rubish brakes tomorrow.

Also, got my wheels in primer off the volvo

(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0556_zps00b727f3.jpg) (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/sparkysparks1/media/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0556_zps00b727f3.jpg.html)

Still deciding what colour to go for.
Having some 20mm spacers made up, ive got my long wheel bolts ready, then i need to get a set of tires.
Title: Re: Campus Build

What has happened there? Looks like some mental camber!
Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 23:11, Fri 30 August 2013
Yeah so basically campus shocks on gt hubs give you camber like that.

we still had to enlarge the top hole on the shock to get it to fit.
But im putting campus hubs back on tomorrow.

The brakes:  gt caliper is slightly longer where it pulls the pad. This part looks detachable and swapable.
gt carrier has a larger aperture to fit thicker vented discs.
So to get gt brakes on campus, you need the carrier and the back part of the gt calipers.
Title: Re: Campus Build
Post by: sparkysparks on 19:06, Sat 31 August 2013
So i put it back together today with original brakes and hubs and the new shocks.

It actually sits even lower now, which means the wheels scrub the arches and the inners on full lock.
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0559_zpsca992503.jpg) (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/sparkysparks1/media/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0559_zpsca992503.jpg.html)

Had to roll the arches with a small hammer which took all the paint off,

Ive had to prime it for now just to keep the rust away.
(http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h472/sparkysparks1/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0560_zps37afeca3.jpg) (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/sparkysparks1/media/Cars/Campus%202/DSC_0560_zps37afeca3.jpg.html)

Still dont know if it has cured the scrubbing as ive not been out yet. Ill find out later :D

Curb is in the way but as you can see its sitting pretty low. Also it looks like it sticks out a mile so its needs moving back in under the car.

I remember having a cherry bomb fitted onto my first car, over 10 years ago now. It was a 950cc Mk2 Fiesta and it sounded awesome i thought at the time.

Didn't realise they still made them, they used to sell them off the shelve at some car parts place local to me.

My last one was on my e30 and my last campus. I assume its a remake, the welding on it is shocking anyway.

Its the pops i like. Plus its a pretty cheap back box with plenty of props to go with  ;)

it's a great car in a great condition, this volvo engine (b 18ft) , on the outside it's the same with the F-type renault engines, so you could use a renault 5 f3n engine mount, or a 1.6 diesel renault 5 engine mount! and use a jc5 diesel gearbox from megane 96-99 ;). congratulations for the car!
